Actually we don't know if it was or wasn't an "extremely bad idea," since it never made it out as a final product. I mean it wouldn't hold to today's standards of games, but neither does Sonic 3D Blast (which came out instead) of course.

I'm not saying that I agree or disagree with your list, but Koopa Troopa and Silver should be switched. Koopa Troopa is known for being quite nippy in the sports spin-offs, while Silver is infamous for being slower, and famous for using his mind techniques, instead.

I doubt Omega or Chao would get in, nor would Pianta or Shy Guy, but that seems like a logical roster.

IGN has a new preview of the game up.


April 3, 2009 - Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games may have gotten a lukewarm critical reception (its average review score is 6.2) but it has been an incredible success with consumers. The mash-up of SEGA and Nintendo properties has sold upwards of 10 million copies worldwide on Wii and DS, and continues to sell well some 16 months after release. Work on the obvious follow up, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, began immediately after the first was completed in November 2007. Fans can expect a similar but more robust experience when it ships later this year. It's still a very casual sports game, but it is already showing polish and the Wii balance board has been implemented well.

Last time around Mario & Sonic was developed for the Wii and DS at the same time by the same team, and they ended up being very similar games. For Olympic Winter Games, the two versions are being developed separately and should be more individual experiences. The DS has a greater focus on its single-player game, although it will offer download play for up to four gamers off one cartridge. Players can go on Adventure Tours with the DS game where they accept quests and encounter boss matches. SEGA will be unveiling these bosses at a later date, but did say we can probably guess what bad guys from the Mario and Sonic universes would make sense.

On the Wii, the new Festival mode allows players to work through the entire Olympic Games, from opening to closing ceremony. The developers felt play sessions for the first game were very short. With Festival Mode, they are giving players a chance to get more involved and spend more time with the game.

SEGA describes the games included in this package not as mini-games, but full-featured recreations of Olympic sports. We were able to play three events on the Wii (with and without balance board controls) and two on the DS and agree they aren't mini-games. They are aimed at the casual audience, though, so they are far from simulations. Controls are very simple and there doesn't appear to be a whole lot of depth to explore.

The developers want to make Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games as alluring to the mainstream audience as possible, so all events (except some fantasy Dream Events) will be unlocked from the beginning. SEGA is afraid many casual gamers wouldn't get to experience parts of the game that were locked away. The company did say it wants to increase the game's appeal to core gamers, although we haven't seen specific examples of these hardcore hooks. It's always a balancing act, trying to please both camps.

Many events can be played with the Wii balance board, but none of them require it and all can be played with just the remote and nunchuk. We don't know how many events will use the peripheral, but SEGA is trying to implement it where it makes sense. During our time with the game we used it to play Alpine Skiing and Bobsledding, and it worked well in both cases. Players won't be able to use the board in any multiplayer games, though.

The Olympic committee keeps a watchful eye on development and makes sure the events are presented the way it wants. Alpine skiing, for instance, is a solo event in the Olympics. So while it can be played competitively in split screen in Mario & Sonic, your opponent is represented by a ghost image on your screen and you can't interact with one another. The Dream Events will be making a return, though, and the developers are able to take more liberties with these fantasy competitions.

All of the characters from the first game will be returning, as well as some new faces to be revealed at a later time. We did notice the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics mascots Miga, Quatchi, and Sumi on the side lines as we sped down the mountain, so it is possible they could be included in the roster.

So far, Alpine Skiing is the event we're enjoying the most. Tilting the remote and nunchuk left and right to steer felt responsive, and you can continue to steer your character while they're airborne, just as you can in many platformers. Each character has an ability that can be activated once a race. They all seem to be speed boosts, but everyone performs a different animation. To activate the ability, you simply press the A button. When using the balance board to ski, leaning left and right will steer and you only need the remote and nunchuk to push yourself out of the gate and activate your special ability.

Speed Skating simplifies the event down to timed swings of your remote. To gain speed right at the beginning of the race you waggle for a few moments. When you've hit your stride you just swing left and right to maintain a good pace. Finding the right rhythm is a matter of watching your character's animations and following onscreen cues that tell you to either speed up or slow down. For the final sprint to the finish line, you again waggle as fast as you can.

Finally, we played the bobsled game in both single-player mode with the balance board and four-player co-op with four remotes. When sledding with a remote, you hold the controller to your chest and lean left and right to steer. Onscreen arrows will let you know which way the track will wind next. As in Speed Skating, players initially get going by doing a bit of waggling. When playing co-op, all players will need to lean accordingly to make a good run. Onscreen icons display where everyone is leaning, so everyone else will know if you're the weak link. If you want to use the balance board, you sit on the peripheral and lean side to side to control the sled.

The game will track your records locally. SEGA didn't want to talk about online leaderboards, yet, but an announcement could be forthcoming.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games is looking good in the visual department. Characters are animated well, and audiences (populated by supporting characters from the Mario and Sonic worlds) are lively.

The Hammer Bros. are two large koopas (large compared to the smaller ones that crawled on the ground) from the original Super Mario Bros. that are usually seen together. They throw a lot of hammers that are difficult to avoid, which is why they only appear in more advanced stages of the game.

Even in the Mario Party 8 mini-game, where you could play against a Thwomp, a Monty Mole, a Goomba, and other such improbable characters for racing, Lakitu was made to hold the lights. Dang Nintendo.

Since when do age restrictions go into games? Baby Mario is also too young to drive. And Petey is way too big. He's at least the size of Ridley and not the one that appears in the SSMB intro.

Some things new unless was said already:

Each character has a special action once per event they can perform, like Tails flight or Mario spin attack.

Promised more "dream events" with wider selection. All normal events may be unlocked from start, but dream events unlockable.

So far announced:
Bobsleigh
Speed Skating
Downhill Skiing
Skeleton
Snowboard cross

No meantion of new characters sorry.

Wii only game mode:
Festival mode is the entire Olympics opening to end of 17 day schedule

DS game mode:
Adventure Tours is like the game' RPG like mode for one player play.
"You control Mario and Sonic, Explore a huge map, go on quests and play minigames." "We think we'll be able to show you realy new things about Mario and Sonic's Worlds, and the mixture of both of thier worlds..."

I think Petey Piranha is only huge in Super Mario Sunshine (debut) and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. In the rest of the games, he is medium sized. (like Mario Super Sluggers)

lol how about the mario characters are the dogs since they never talk and are less human than the sonic characters

It could be a team thing. The person in the front drives it and accelerates it, while the person on the slide jumps and turns.
