You have to pay for it to get full functionality and as mentioned, the external set up is a pain and requires far more information than accounts normally do. Honestly if they just used a normal system there'd be no need for BS like giving out a phone number just to play the game.

It is also because it is not like other "pay to play" games out there for the PC.
With the others the money goes into upgrading the server system, upgrading the game, expansions for the game and so on and so forth (I played WoW for 2yrs and got my moneys worth).
This pay is just to get the full game AFTER you purchase it to begin with. If it was for the game developing company I could see it. I can't see paying MS just so they can run servers with no money going into more development of the game.

what a logical answer
"the money goes into patches and expansions"
Then why does EA AND THQ manage to pull them off for....free...?
Just curious how you can seem to balance that :)
It functions ,but probably one of the most obvious answer is that it is a hassle or extra step when a plethora of games out there don't require such a thing. It's signing up twice but you have to give more personal information. Seriously, I want to play not spend time logging in and verifying. Another thing is Live Gold because Live Silver isn't good enough. Now I have to pay to play online when I already bought the game boxed, preordered, or digital dl. Certain multiplayer features aren't allowed like stats tracking which are found in other games for free.Feels kinda like a MMO and also Live kinda has power over you. Most of this might not be only to UAW, but it's still a ***** to deal with. What use to be recreation is now a frustrating mess.
Since I don't like one sided arguments, here are the positives: Parental control (as if age really determines a persons ability to tell fact from fiction. How old was the guy who shot up that school?), extra money for developers, keep microsoft alive so they can pump out more "revolutionary" stuff, keeps track of your stats for other ppl to see, achievements, and a updates on your games.
