View Full Version : name availability
Just curious to anyone who might know...but will names in PSOBB be universally available like they were in the original PSO, or will it be more similar to other mmorpgs and be on a first come first serve basis?

Account usernames cant be duplicated, but character names can, just like older versions of PSO.

No u cant duplicate char names in psobb.I usually didn't... mostly because all my chars had a story and if they were all named Kaname then it'd be kinda weird... But the reason other MMOs had a only-one-name thing was because you whispered people based on username. But in PSO you searched and mailed based on the characters hidden ID.

I remember i went on dreamcast V1 with a character called Raven and a few weeks later i bumped into another character who looked the same and had my name

Puppet, that reminds me of the old DC PSO's posers, they would put up your name, make it simular to your character, and fake in to your community, then in the end, ruining your rep then taking your friends' stuffs... Well, I don't know how that works, but I am sure I will know if my friends are talking weird.. just what I read.
However, I like/dislike the name thing; like, because I don't have to worry about names(yes, a French guy took my made-up name in RO >.< and it's not tifa, or something from famous games ;_; ); dislike, because I don't want that rumour of imposers to come true.( or stay true)

It doesnt matter if they can or cant duplicate names. If they're in your team then you can tell if they're online. And remembering they're battle stats and challenge ranks often helps.
Oh look it's Inuyasha!
And another one...
And another one...
Oh god.

ist the first thing you do search the guildcard when you see someone you tink you know? At least i do, ive seen way too many black humar, spikey hair, 'SHADOW' chars, and the same goes for sephiroth, why do people even make those chars anyway
I really hated being able to have the same name as other players. For the reasons posted above and because when you end up in the same party or lobby with them, one of you will have your name altered to tell the difference between the 2. I'm hoping I picked an uncommon name...
Dang. Now I know someone is gonna take it.

Someone probably will take it because of Rockman.EXE...
I really dislike the duplicated names thing, but it is more true to life than other online games.

Some advice
Have lots of names avaliable
Choose odd names
Dont pick names that are in game items
And mabey later we should post our names on the site
I'm kind of disappointed to hear that the naming system will be like the original PSO. Its nice to be able to name your character whatever you wish, but it also hinders on your character's sense of identity. It's very discouraging to see numerous other characters who are more or less carbon copies of you, simply because you wished to choose one of the few physical styles that looks good and have a simple name. I don't look forward to having to come up with some obscure, unknown name for my character just to have an identity that is my own.

I'm both glad and sad, if only for all the carbon copies.. But glad that if one of my names are taken I won't need to add bizzar numbers or whatnot to be able to play.
Kaname

My name is already a variation on Kaname to get the Whitill ID, so I doubt I'll have a normal "Kaname", just as a heads up if someone wants to steal my identity.
