View Full Version : Patch Crash (Cont.)
Sort of a continuation from the other thread. I'm still having the problem where I try to patch but my computer crashes. At this point I really need someone who's fixed this problem, or a Mod's help. I have Windows XP, Service Pack 1, DirectX 9.0c, a Radeon 9200 graphics card (Updated driver), AMD Athlon XP 2200, 1.80 GHz, and 256 MB of Ram. Hope that helps you help me. :?
Well, I start by going in through the shortcut (online.exe) and select patch. It goes on to tell me it's preparing it or whatever, and then my computer starts humming louder (You can hear the crash coming  ). And then after a few seconds of staring at the frozen screen (I know it's frozen because the background stops changing), my computer restarts. No blue screen or anything, just a sudden restart.
I'll just leave this here until the problem is solved. Should be helpful, 'cause I hear other people had a similar problem.

Pretty much the same as the poster has said here, but my computer doesn't restart - it simply halts. I've tried a couple of suggestions for similar problems, and I've also disabled pretty much everything I could before running, including firewall/antivirus, and it still doesn't seem to work. It has worked ONCE for me, although I have no idea why - I was able to patch, but if I ever try to go back to the patch screen again I freeze up before it checks.
Also, I am using WinXP so it is odd...when the game freezes I must hardboot my computer. Ctrl-alt-del does not work, even though the game is in windowed mode.
BIG EDIT:
Earlier in the post I said the game patched once, but I wasn't quite sure why...this could be another fluke, but I disabled the sound and not only did the game load significantly faster, but it is now patching again (I uninstalled earlier thinking it might fix the problem). It is also consistent with my audio - sometimes on reboots it just doesn't start up for some reason until I disable/re-enable it. This COULD be the problem you/I/we are having. For comparison, I am using a SoundMAX on an Asus board (A7V8X-X) and all of my drivers are up to date (when I was having problems I made sure everything was updated). Please try this and let me know how things work out. Based on the results, I may try more 'tests' to see if I can get it working reliably with the sound.
More edits (edit function I love you long time):
I ran dxdiag and turned the sound acceleration down from full to basic and it still seems to be working - there is no way to really know if it will continue to work, considering all we have right now is basically a glorified patcher until the tenth. (FYI this sound acceleration reduction has fixed many problems for me in the past, but I recently did a fresh install to 'fix' a non-existing problem with my computer per my ISPs instructions and it was still on full! It's almost always at basic on my PC...)
Unfortunately that didn't work for me.

Bleh, sorry, I tried. It still doesn't seem to be a 100% sure thing for me yet, either. Seems I have to test it a bit more on my end...

Same thing is happening to me. I believe everything is the same on my system as the first poster, except I have an nVidia GeForce 6600 graphics card.

If by patch you mean the in-game version, the first time I tried it I got a black screen and had to turn off my computer to resolve this problem :(
I'll probably try it again soon now that I've changed the resolution
EDIT: Nevermind. I got the problem fixed by being able to properly login, care of the special language setting detour specified in this forum. I downloaded the patch after trying to start the game :D
Well my first thing to say is get Service Pack 2 it may not be the problem but SP2 sure as hell will help you in daily use of windows.
Now I think I might be able to create a patch for all those who's PC's keep crashing. I will look into it for you all. If i can grab the info that is being sent in the actual update program and make a small patching program myself it should work for you. Im at work from12noon-12midnight GMT today till wed and I go away on thursday for the weekend so im afraid you will have to wait untill next week but then I should have a day or two free to try and do this for you all.

Admin/Mod guy: I was posting a new one with a more accurate thread title so that people with the same problem would actually be able to see it. Could you possibly change the subject of this thread to be more accurate?
My progress:
Windows update didn't work. I didn't do directx after the video drivers because I changed my card about a month or two ago... (have had this computer for about 3 or 4 years).
I also have a problem with my System Properties dialog. I can't access it at all. Not by right clicking my computer, not by the control panel, and not by the shortcut key.
I need to try fixing that first. :/
I've got a nVidia GeForce 6600, and a LNE100TX Linksys EtherFast 10/100 Network Card.
This sucks. I was looking forward to this so much. :/
I looked at the FAQ and downloaded the latest ATI driver like it said and I still can't get in. I got Windows updates, even reinstalled DirectX 9.0c. Nothing I tried has worked. I don't understand what's wrong. I was really looking forward to it too.

If your screen looks like that, either you'll see downloading bars progress or a message at the bottom once you wait a while saying there are no patches to download and will ask you to press Enter.

Linksys I beleive. My brother can get on fine on a different computer. I don't get why I can't, the 2 computers are pretty much the same.

i have exactly the same problem.
when i run the game it just quits during the patching process (no reboot or black screen though). it mostly happens when i have dled 10%, so if i have the will i could prolly restart a hundred times and patching 10% @ a time.
anyhow i get this error message when i start the game in windowed mode:
http://img185.echo.cx/img185/9407/shot00013ov.png
it says something about a hack though i have nothing of the sort. the only "suspicious" thing i have installed is netlimiter which i didnt run @ that point and which only limits dl/ul speed :?
i have a nlited version of win xp pro sp2 if that might have something to do with it :S
i have all the latest drivers n stuff so that shouldnt be the problem...
ffs sega solve this problem now!!!!!!!!
EDIT:
Ok, so i've run "some tests" of my own and i've come to the conclusion that the game restarts after about 1 minute and 5 seconds after the error message appears, it doesnt matter if u reach the patching screen or not!
so, the problem has to do with nProtect (i've heard a bunch of sheit being said about it). now what the heck is this "hack" i have?!?!
EDIT2:
I think I might have found what app nProtect (at least on my comp) registers as a hack: SetPoint.exe, which is a Logitech application.
U guys @ Sega; contact nProtect about this bug and have them immediately fix it, plz.

Wow, shut up. You're not going to get Sega to fix this by threats, nor is this their top priority. It seems to be only happening to a few people. Furthermore, you don't seem to have the same bug. Everyone else's computer restarts when we try to patch. It doesn't even start to download. You have a different problem.

Nope, nevermind... my solution didn't work. The only reason it didn't crash was beause it couldn't connect to the patch in the first place. So I went and changed something so that it could connect, so i'm back to crashing.

i too have this problem.
i'm on win2k and i actually get a bsod after a couple seconds of the patching screen.
i've tried using various combinations of video and audio options to no avail.
Graphics can't be the problem. I didn't crash when I tried to patch while it was down. It only crashes when it connects to the patch. It's gotta be a connection problem.

i think the problem is the network card. I'm using a
*AMDTek AN983 10/100 PCI Adapter
and some other guy with the BSOD problem used a
*LNE100TX Linksys EtherFast 10/100 Network Card
i think these cards have the same chipset (and that must cause the BSOD?)
source: http://mail-index.netbsd.org/netbsd-help/2000/08/24/0012.html
my driver is version 2.12.507.2001 but i'm currently trying to find new drivers... seems difficult though.
i suggest that those with the Patch-BSOD problem check if their network card is one of these, or if it uses the same chipset as these.
Yeah, it's definitely a card problem. My entire network card shuts down and reboots itself whenever PSO attempts to get the patch.
I'm running the NetGear FA311, myself. No updated drivers available, so I'm stuck. 20 bucks gets me a new network card, but this is the only game that's given me problems with it...

I have the same network card (NetGear FA311) and have encountered the same problem. Unfortunately, my budget is tight at the moment, so I'll play the waiting game to see if it is confirmed if that's the issue. I know it's 15 dollars, but that's 15 dollars of food.
It's good to know we've nearly cracked down on the issue though. Does the NetGear FA311 also have that same chipset installed?

well if you're able to play either from getting the PSO patch from a friend or by updating the driver, please let me know
Yeah, if spending money (minus monthly cost after beta) just for this game can be avoided, that would be ten kinds of awesome.
Keeping this post updated would be nice, and thanks much to anyone that has been contributing feedback to the problem. Bound to get on PSO eventually. =]

well, it's time to reply to my own request...
i got some (slightly) new drivers to my AMDTek Card and i no longer get the BSoD. :D
However the game chrashed to desktop while downloading the patch.
When i restarted the game i had the new version number (.15) and it said there were no new patches...
so i am not sure if i succsessfully got the patch, but the BSoD problem is gone atleast.
i need to find even newer drivers, but it's not easy it seems.
So folks, try updating your drivers.

I can say one of my friends was having the exact same problem, with multiple games.(Battlefield, City of Heroes). He has an Onboard NIC (Thats network interface card for those who dont know) So he went to walmart, bought a cheap network card, and has had no problems since. So all else fails, try a different card, if it doesnt work then take it back.

I called tech support and the guy was absolutely no help at all. :x
I read an Amazon review of the FA311, however, and it mentioned installing a third-party driver. If anyone could direct me to one, I would be eternally indebted.
I'm using a LNE100TX Linksys Fast Ethernet 10/100 Adapter (v4) and the latest driver for it is 7/1/2001. :? Is there a 3rd party driver that works?

Well okay people. You can try many different solutions. I too, though, had this problem. I do not know which solved it but this is the steps I took:
1.) I updated my bios and updated my chipset drivers.
2.) I updated my NIC card. Install with the most updated or if the updated one isnt available you can always try your luck with a lower version.
3.) I updated my video card drivers. I highly suggest the Tweaks r Us drivers if you have any Nvidia cards. You can get them from guru3d.com. They also have some nice tweaked ATI catalyst drivers.
Yeah, so after I did all that the patch patched fine. =D. SO:
GOOD RUCK!

I have the same type of NIC as you (with up-to-date drivers), and have the same problem. Guess I'll probably just wait until the game client's compatibility issues are ironed out.

I would really love it if someone from sega could look at this... It seems we have narrowed it down to a particular cards chipset, and I would really appriciate if we could be told a place to get better drivers, or a way to fix it so we can play...
Looks like there's no known solution yet outside of getting a new card.

I also agree that its not fair for us to have to look into upgrading a piece of modern hardware for the sake of their game, and it would be real nice of them to assure us the issue is being looked into.
(Not trying to stir up anything, I just feel like we're being ignored here.)
It's not like we're trying to play the game on a slow, pentium 133 mhz and begging for them to downgrade the game to be compatable. lol
...This is a rather serious problem, and a "we're looking into it" post would be nice, at least...
That is, assuming someone with connections to Sonic Team can speak english.

Yea, I wouldn't be so annoyed with it if we could at least get someone to tell us something's being done.
Exactly. I understand it's a beta and all, but isn't one of the main points of a beta test to iron out bugs like this?
