Run a search for ventrilo, which can be used for online play. There aren't many voice chat clients out there that can be configured properly for in-game use, as programs such as IParty fall far too short of being useful for things like this.

There's Team Speak also

I used TS for quite a few games, works quite well but configuring it can give some people issues for some reason.

I actually find TeamSpeak a lot easier to configure than Ventrilo. Vent makes my head hurt, but it's my choice of VoIP programs.

You can also use Roger Wilco and Combat Net Radio, but I'd personally recommend using Ventrilo or TeamSpeak.

I exclusively use Vent. And by exclusively I also mean that I don't type at all unless absolutely neccessary.

I think using Ventrilo exclusively would make for quite a unique game experience. Plus, if you were to take it a step further, there's audio editing add-ons that filter sound input of a microphone to change the voice to, say, a metallic robotic tone, giving an accurate vocal representation to specific characters if so desired. And that is hardcore MMOing.

You ever play Mech Assault? Robot vocie masks are forwned upon. Hell, voice masks in general are frowned upon.

For what reason? I haven't played Mech Assault and don't know enough about the game to determine why they wouldn't be acceptable.

Xbox PSO has a filter so you can mod your voice to fit your character (though most guys trying to mod girl voices ended sounding like small children instead).

I have both TS and Vent servers, but I don't use them for PSO. Didn't talk much over at Xbox since there's little to talk about in-game, and it's the same here.

Vocie masks sound horrible and a lot of the time it completely garbles what you're trying to say. Robot vocie masks are the worst of the bunch. The only well implemented voice mask I've heard was on Raze's Hell. When playing soccer you can get hit by a beam with turns you into Kewlett making you worthless until it wears off. During this time, however, you're slapped with a Kewlett voice mask and it's absolutely hilarious while it lasts.

Hmm. I'd worked with voice masks for fandubs and amateur audio dramas and didn't experience any problematic results, but that's most likely because it was directly into a recording device rather than a program such as Ventrilo, and the fact that we weren't trying to blow up mechs. I find that interesting, though, that they'd be so poorly received.
