Well actualy that is something of a common misnomer. A republic is a republic and a democracy is a democracy. I know Im just splitting hairs but here is how it works.

In a Republic (like the USA) the citizens elect government officials to various positions of power and responsibility. The elected officials then make the laws.

In a Democracy there are almost no elected officials. In their stead, the people directly controle (through vote and consensus) what laws the nation will live under.

Most people call America a democracy when in fact by definition we are a Democratic Republic.
