Chapter 4: Of war
Three years later I was on the front lines with Ryders uint. At the edge of an endless sea of sand. Rounds ripped though the night's air, massive forms silhouette by the muzzle flash from there weapons. The incoming artillery rounds briefly illuminated the deserts rolling dunes.
"Ryder, To all gunrunners, cut around and silence those damn heavy gunners, there cutting up the first squad, Ryder out."
Whit that command we tore off through the swirling sands, weaving between the dunes dust flowing around our hounds as the endless dunes gave way to an oasis, the tress flattened by the back blast from the heavy cannons, Brass shells littered the once beautiful spring, looking as if some giant had once died here and all that was left were his teeth protruding from the white sands.
Flashes lit the the oasis, for a brief time turning night to day outlining the massive shapes of the heavy gunners with there cannons spaying flames towards the heavens, unleashing man made thunder on there distant foes. Luckily they had not noticed us as we crested the dune to there north. As the first heavy rockets spat from there tubes. Filling the night with our own lighting, flaming trails like lances of light slamming into the side's of the Sal Kar heavy gunners, like some spoiled child throwing his toys in a tantrum; entire sections of there hounds were flung through the air. Like some beast from legend, the hounds turned with flaming hydraulic fluid dripping off there armor platting from there ruined sides.
"MOVE" My cry went over the radio, as the heavy gunners replied with furry. Kicking Lady back from the dune crest as it dissolved like a sand castle under the relentless pounding of the sea. My partner was not so lucky a heavy round, engulfed his hound in a halo of fire, the shock wave smashed the hound to the ground. A broken shell of a hound was all that remand, and smoldering derbies rained down around him. With any luck only his hound was dead if we carried the night, rescue crews would pull him free. I had bigger things to worry about, he was ether ok or not. My problem seamed to be. That I was the main center of attention to the enemy hounds; cresting the shattered dune.
The blast from there cannons blowing ripples in this sea of sand. At such short range there two-hundred millimeter cannon shells were punching holes in to the dune I was on; to close for the shells to arm them self. Ripping of a long burst of fire from my twin gatling. Burning through six-hundred rounds so fast that the tracers were drawing lines through the night air. Like some god striking a forge; sparks showered far from the first hound in my sights as I pored fire in to the behemoth, praying for something to give. As Lady was rocked by the shells detonating under the sand, lofting globs of molten glass through the sky. Sliding down the into the hole blasted from the dune side. Throwing off my aim, when suddenly the entire dune in front of me disintegrated in a wall of fire, as our heavy gunners finally ranged in, giving the Sal Kar forces a taste of what we sampled these last few hours.
" Recon to all units, possible enemy forces twentyseven klicks to the north of point A2. Recon Out" Cracked over the radio. Quickly followed by " Lore if your still mobile form on me, Ryder out." ; " Copy that Ryder, forming on you. Lore out" I radioed out
About fifteen minutes latter , I pulled up by Ryder's Hound Hades. As the battle field techs swarmed over Lady, even before she had cooled to a tempter that was safe to work on. Replacing the outer armor plates; removing the twisted remains or my heavy rifle, It had taken a hit earlier on in the battle. Getting out of lady for the first time in almost over a day was hard. Climbing down the side, ended up dumping me to the ground from about nine feet up, luckily the sand broke my fall for the most part.
"Lore get off the ground and come over here." I heard over the sounds of the techs replacing ammo and fixing what ever they could. Looking up, there was Ryder standing there; haloed by the flood lights set up for the techs at this field base. Dusting my self off I followed rider towards the command tent.
"Well Lore, how do you think this battle is going to go." asked Ryder
"Depends on if what the scout saw, out there it was on the edge of his sensor envelope. I would have to say currently we have a good chance of holding this area, and diving them back to to the edge of the field."
I replied
As we walked through the flap into the command tent, the glare from the lights in side were blinding bright. "Well looks like every one is here, Lets get started." A voice said from behind the blinding glare. As my eyes cleared I noticed almost all the senior Unit commanders and there top squad leaders from the 24th.
"People, Recon has spotted a large Sal Kar force to the north its assembling just before the pass, if we can hold them there we should be able to destroy there remaining forces. After that all available and remaining Units of the 26th and the 28th will reinforce you." said the Commander of the 24th
Ryder turned " You all heard the man get back to your units and Squads this is what will decide this battle, Dismissed"
As every one got up to leave " Lore wait just a second." Called Ryder.
When every on else had left, Ryder came over to me. " Lore I want your Squad to plug the pass, I need some one I can trust, who will hold till the bitter end. Are you with me?" we had been through a lot the last three years through some desperate battles, been wounded more times than I can count on hands. Never anything major, had lady shot out from under me and around me five times now. " Yea Ryder, you know you can count on me." I replied
With that we left the command tent to get to our hounds and pick up what ever was left of our respective squads.

I will post the next 4 chapters when I have gotten them to a point that there ready. The story looks like it will probably be around 12 or more chapters long.
