I do not really care about the offline game, I just want to go online and be my own character!
What do you think?

I'd play it at least once to see the story, but I cant imagin it being worth playing twice unless doing so each time unlocks something worthwhile.

Ah, but do you think you will play it first? I think I will go online right away!
Also I don't think they will let offline effect the online as it will let people hack the offline to get bonuses.

Yea, offline is totally offline. All of our chars are gunna be stored on the servers again (I'm getting the PC version, dunno whats gunna happen with the 360 version, please enlighten). I plan on going online almost immediately, though during server downtime (or if my connection doesn't work) I will do offline for the story. I imagine almost everyone will go online immediately, at least thats the sentiment that I've seen so far.

I think I'd play the offline game first. Helps you get a feel for how the game plays without coming off as a total newcomer. Besides which, I love storyline in a game and a proper story-driven PSO game is something I've wanted for a while (Sure, PSO has a storyline, but its more of a sideline than a driving force).
Once I get online with PSU though, watch out world! I'll be the best and cutest darned FOnewearl you ever met ;)

I think I'll go through offline just because I'd feel guilty if I didn't. I'd love to jump online and start with everyone else at the same time but I'd be completely skipping the learning process and from what I read there might be a steeper learning curve than before.

Offline first. I want to know what happens on each planet before I explore them online with people. And I also want to fight the dude a la Darth Vader.

Wow, quoted multiple times :)
I think ST made a good move in seperating the online and offline modes of play. While im certain its not to everyone's liking, it does prevent offline item hacking, which players then bring into the online game. This happened a lot on the gamecube, and even allowed items which would otherwise be unobtainable.
Now all I need is a release date so I can mark it on my calendar with a huge sticker!

Im a big oniline junkie but I have to say I want offline far far more than online. My first great gaming moment was when i first discovered RPGs with the amazing Phantasy star 4 and I have been wanting a Phantasy star rpg since with no avail. Roll on PSU!
NO. Unless you get weps or something from beating the offline mode. :D

I dont really care about offline mode. Especially since im getting the PC version. The offline is something i'd wanna play on the PS2 or Xbox. I'd rather get online and realize how badly i suck at the game.. then go play offline when i realize i have no idea what everyone is talking about.

Exactly, though I may pop on and offline in short bursts as I complete the story - I'm a big fan of the old Genesis PS series, and I'm looking forward to a new full-on RPG story.
I'm getting the PS2 version just so I can enjoy it like a console RPG, so I'm hoping that the offiline mode is just as good as it will be online.
(I'm expecting to spend 24/7 on PSU for the first half-a-month that it is out)

Was the combat done in a FF style or rather like the hack and slash of PSO?

It is like FF but I would moreso say it is like Dragon Quest. Because you can see the monsters head on.
It is sad that people now say "FF-like" instead of "DQ-like" or even just "turn based RPG."

It is sad that people now say "FF-like" instead of "DQ-like" or even just "turn based RPG."DQ might have kicked it off, but FF is the one every gamer instinctively thinks about. Also "Turn based" can be quite misleading with many RPG games, because while there are sometimes turn-based elements, the combat may have realtime points as well.
