The Last Mistake.
Chapter 1.

Prologue.
It has been 30 years since humanity colonized Ragol. 30 years of peace.
Humanity has rebuilt the central dome and built others like it.
Ragol was the only other planet besides Earth in the galaxy that could sustain life. If that was true, then wouldn’t others have their jealous eyes on it as well? Humanity’s last mistake was not to realize that. This is the story of that mistake.

AUW3079 War Diary: Zakazi.

I couldn’t believe the news when I heard an alien ship was orbiting Ragol.
And then I heard that they had fired on the central dome! So the Governor
began drafting civilian troops and putting them into combat regiments.
I too have been recruited. And so has everyone else I know. On the
First day I learned how to use a sword. I had never imagined I would learn combat.
Well I said earlier we all got recruited into a Regiment so ill tell you which one I was recruited into. I have been recruited into AUW 3079 regiment. It should say so on my journal. So the on the second day they took everyone in my squad and transported us to
Delsthano hill. It’s usually a tourist attraction, but it is near one of the domes
So my squad was ordered to protect it and the civilians inside. Speaking of my
Squad, there are five of us. Plus me. There’s Auriga, our field commander,
Me, melee expert, Jace, explosives expert, Banny, our ranged expert,
Haul Lunar, our magic expert, and Corey, our tech expert.
Day three was when the fighting began. The aliens were like demons,
With implike wings and stout armor. They did not use ranged weapons at all.
They could speak, but we heard little from them other than battle cries.
It began in the morning. My squad and I were just waking up and were radioing
The other squads around the dome for a routine checkup. All was okay,
But squad #17 didn’t call in. So we went over to check on it.
Everything was burning. Corpses lay on the ground, and death was in the air.
We were shocked. This was the first death we had ever seen. But not all the corpses
Were human. Some were this new species, which would soon come to be called Wraiths.
Suddenly we heard a scream. Four wraiths dropped from the sky and attacked us.
Banny pulled out his gun and shot one of them. It fell to earth and crumbled to dust.
Before we could do anything else, they were on us. We fought bravely, but we lost.
We were all knocked unconscious and when we woke, Corey was gone! The aliens had kidnapped him, and taken him to an alien prison, or so we thought.
They had actually taken him to their leader to be interrogated. We never thought we would see him again, or in what circumstances. After the battle, when we had all woken, I found that all our weapons were missing. “They’ve taken our weapons to be
Examined and copied” Auriga said with some regret.
“But how are we supposed to do anything?” Banny complained.
“We aren’t. We’ll have to take some of squad#17’s.”
“But I don’t want to take their weapons!”

zakazi

“Then you’ll be left without a weapon.”
Banny stopped abruptly and, with much complaint, took a handgun from the dead troops.
“Hey wait a minute, if the aliens took our weapons then why didn’t they take their weapons?” Banny pointed out.
“Because they were using handguns and sabers and we were using Final Impacts
And Daylight Scars.”
Banny looked crushed. “You mean I have to use a handgun?” he complained.
“Only if you want a weapon.”
“GUYS! STOP FIGHTING!” I yelled.
Banny started to cry.
“Zak is right. We need to get moving.” Said Auriga over the noise.
I smirked at Banny. We started moving again, with Banny complaining all the while.
“Where are we going?” I asked Auriga.
“To the top of the hill.”
“Why the hill?”
“So we can see if any other squads have been attacked.”
That’s what I dislike about Auriga. He seems to have such wisdom, but nobody
In the squad gets any of it. We soon reached the top of the hill, only to see the waste
On the other side of it. What I saw I will never forget. Thousands of tents were burning.
Even the central dome was aflame. And wraiths walked through the wreckage, taking weapons from the corpses of the soldiers. Banny started whimpering. “You mean I’ll never see my final impact again?” he whined.
“Probably not.” I said. He whined some more. And then I saw Auriga’s face.
He looked shocked…and angry. He turned around and said.
“Let’s go get Corey back.”
So we did. And this is where I end my first diary.
Cya soon.
Zak.

Chapter 2.

EPT0678 Pilot Diary: Kaeda.

After the massacre on Delsthano hill, the governor knew these aliens were serious.
So he started recruiting pilots, like me. I used to have a private plane that I would fly on weekends, but now it’s all serious. Serious. I like that word. Well my plane is just like a private plane, only it has carbon CO2 explosive projectiles loaded onto it and released at my will. And low quality laser cannons. Because I was never in the military, they don’t let me fly the big birds, like the boys get to. I get stuck with this crappy old bomber.
Well I’m not here complain, so lets get started telling that tale of mine. After being
Recruited they shipped me up to Pioneer 5, which had been remodeled into a warship.
Now if humanity has already colonized Ragol, then why would we still have pioneers?
Because the governor wanted to search for other planets. Its true, Ragol is getting crowded. So anyway, back to the subject.

zakazi

They shipped me to Pioneer 5, and put me in a 50 person squadron, we pilots get put into much bigger squads. Well I got to know my squad, (most of them) and began training with them. On the first day I learned how to fly. Yes I know, ridiculous.
That I, a trained pilot, would learn how to fly. They weren’t satisfied with a civilian pilot
And a private plane. So they booked me in simulator after simulator of combat flying.
I don’t think I’ll ever use any of it; these aliens just don’t seem intelligent enough to
Make Fighters…only Landers. And they do use Landers. That was day two.
It was late at night when an alarm went off in the whole ship, and all the pilots
On board were to report to the hangar. When I got there I saw that the alien ship had split apart into 30 or 40 smaller ships…and those were going down to the planet. They looked like troop carriers from my simulations. And I bet they did hold lots of troops.
Well they told us to make double time to our ships; take off and blow up as many Landers as we could before they got down to the planet. Its funny, but no one ever realizes how important pilots are to a war. If we had let those Landers go down to the surface then who knows how many ground troops could have been killed in the melee.
But that didn’t happen.
We killed them all.
I wish those aliens had been peaceful. The first ship darted down toward the planet and tried to get to the surface. But I was quicker. I flew up above it and launched a CO2 Cartridge. It hit the hull and detonated. A hole was blown in the side of the ship and cargo began flowing out. Then the whole ship imploded. The next ship was smarter; it flew in a small corkscrew and fired back on me. I fired a triple blast from my lasers,
And, with some difficulty, I hit the fuel tank. There was a blast of light as the ship exploded. The other members in my squad all led similar skirmishes. We only lost 7 ships, the slow ones, mostly. After the battle I went back to my room in a state of shock.
I had just killed countless wraiths, and even though they were the enemy they were still
Living, breathing, intelligent life-forms. I have never thought of myself as a pacifist, but
I can’t handle…killing…in cold blood. Maybe I can fly a troopship instead.
The following morning I recovered, or so I hoped. After that I swore never to kill another life-form unless absolutely necessary. I hope it’s a promise I can keep.

Chapter 3.

RAC7740 Saboteur Diary: Corey

I’m deathly afraid. I was captured by the aliens and interrogated by their leader.
I think I’m going insane. I can’t handle this much longer…the things he says are so
Convincing but I know they’re lies…all lies…he’s asking me to betray reason itself.
One of us is going to crack soon…and it won’t be me. I don’t even think he can become
Insane…he is fear itself…..

I was knocked unconscious, or so I think…and taken here. I don’t know where I am…but it’s completely alien. Their leader spoke to me, as soon as I woke up. He’s trying to turn Me against my friends…and I think its working…I don’t know who I am or where I came from…my life is on this ship. But I know I have friends.
On the first day he spoke to me…told me many things…about humans. He said humans are a sickness…and I am the cure. He showed me that I am not human,
I am superior to humans…all of them…but I can’t believe that. I know I’m battling with
Sanity and insanity…and I’m losing…but which side am I on? On the second day he showed me the weakness of humans, how they destroy everything only to make way for themselves. And on the third day…I almost gave in…he told me what I had to do…
And I couldn’t believe it…”Humans are my friends!” I pleaded.
“No they are not, Corey. Humans will hinder you forever. You must destroy them”
“But I can’t! My friends’ are humans!”
“Well then, Corey, lets start with something simple. Eliminate the human’s friends.”
“H-how?”
“We took you because you are superior to humans and many of us, you have technology skills that cannot be matched,” he said, “You will use those skills to destroy what the humans call ‘casts’.”
“A-a-all right. Ill try.”
“Good.”
He took me to a computer, sat me down in a chair and told me to work. Wait, I haven’t described what he looks like! Mommy told me that is the first thing you do when you’re writing a book. He was human-sized except that he was so stout, I don’t know whether
Or not he actually was, but his armor was super-sized. And it had spikes all over it…
And he glowed! He glowed red! And all the other wraiths were terrified of him.
That about does it. Now back to the story. So he told me to turn all the casts against the humans, but I couldn’t do that. I just blew them up. I hope the humans will forgive me.
Even though I’m a wraith, humans will soon forgive me.

Chapter 4.

AUW3079 War Diary: Zakazi.
Well after we decided to rescue Corey we knew we’d need a ship to get up in space.
So we headed over to the hangar. Fortunately, there was one ship left. Unfortunately,
Banny was the only one that knew how to fly it. So we went into the hangar and asked permission to borrow it. And they had a look at Banny’s license and OK’ed it.
Well we took off and flew up into the melee up in space, only to receive a mass message from Corey as soon as we left the atmosphere. It said:

Hey guys! Hope you have a great time when I blow up all the casts!
Love ya all, Corey.

Jace started screaming. “HE CAN’T BLOW UP BANNY! IT’LL SET OFF A CHAIN REACTION THAT WILL BLOW UP THE SHIP!!”
“No it won’t” said Banny. “I’m special. It won’t hurt me!”
Suddenly, BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!

“I told you it wouldn’t hurt me!”
I opened my eyes to see banny standing proudly in the wreckage.
“YOU’RE STILL ALIVE!”
“Yeah, can’t you tell?”
Jace gasped. “How did you survive that blast? How did we survive it?”
“Simple. Corey targeted the cast servers for the detonation.”
“How does that help?” I asked.
“Well, I was put into special education and so I wasn’t in the main server group.”
“Oh, I see.” Said Haul.
“Yeah, me too.” Jace replied, still curious.
“But why didn’t he just target the ‘special’ servers too?”
“Because that would mean he would have to rewrite his detonation program over again.”
I thought you were supposed to be an explosives expert, Jace?” I implied.
“You don’t have to know about computer detonations to be an explosives expert.” Auriga said.
There’s that annoying wisdom again. Maybe I’m getting close to understanding it.
“Lets get moving. Obviously Corey still has good in him, or else he would have turned the androids against us instead of just blowing them up. We have to hurry to rescue him before he gets completely brainwashed.” Auriga stated. Wow I hadn’t realized that. I had been about to give up! So we started moving again, but on the way there we noticed that many of the ships had blown up, probably the ones with normal casts in them, Auriga said. Jeez, that wisdom is getting to be a pain.
As soon as we reached the wraith ship they started shooting at us. Luckily, Banny was an expert pilot. He dodged and maneuvered while we winced and tried not to throw up. “If only banny had blown up, maybe we could have lived” Jace said, woefully.
“Jace! Be nice!” I snapped at him.
We managed to get into the hangar in one piece, only to get attacked my wraith marines.
Then finally, we found the prison cells. Only to find that Corey wasn’t there.

Chapter 5.

EPT0687 Pilot Diary: Kaeda.

Were losing the war! Almost all the androids have blown up, and now Newmans are being struck by a strange disease induced by radiation! We can’t hold on much longer
But yesterday, something happened that gave us hope! A small Fighter managed to get into the wraith Flagship and we may not be able to communicate with them, but were sure they’re going to blow stuff up. Well there isn’t much to tell…I killed again…
But it was necessary, so I don’t feel bad about it. If I hadn’t killed that wraith he would have killed many of us. I’ll just retell the story.
Well during curfew, in the mess hall, when all the troops were eating, someone paged me and told me to go to the commander’s office. Once there I was told by the squad commander that I was to get a medal for my bravery yesterday. Strange…I didn’t consider myself brave yesterday. And then it happened. A wraith dropped down from the ceiling vent and brandished a small katana. Before I could think, my hand pulled out a gun and shot her. The commander was shocked. So was I. so was the wraith, now dying.

The wraith looked down at her chest, shocked, and suddenly crumbled to dust.
The commander looked at me and said, “You may not like it, but you have the heart of a warrior,”
“I don’t like it,” I replied.
The commander laughed and said,” Here, you deserve one more medal today.”
I reluctantly took the medal. Maybe she was right. I just didn’t have the courage of a warrior.

Chapter 6.

RAC7740 Saboteur diary: Corey.

The humans were angry at me for destroying the casts. It was not their place to believe that I had chosen that. So I was angry at the humans. And I showed it by smiting all of their Newman friends with disease. And, to retain my sanity, I have decided to categorize all the wraiths and write them down on a list, which I hope to send to the humans as an apology letter. Here is the completed list.

FEAR: glows red, other wraiths afraid of it.
PAIN: glows blue, harms other wraiths.
CONFUSION: glows green, other wraiths disoriented when around it.
ANGER: glows yellow, other wraiths angered by it.

And I made another list to categorize 2nd-level wraiths

TERROR: glows red, other wraiths terrified of it.
AGONY: glows blue, other wraiths greatly harmed by it.
PANIC: glows green, other wraiths panicked by it.
FURY: glows yellow, other wraiths raged by it.

I really do think the humans will regret making an enemy like me. Oh I almost forgot,
My captor isn’t the chief wraith. The chief wraith is arriving via warp in 2 days.
One day, now.

Chapter 7.

AUW3079 War Diary: Zakazi.

W e have been captured, the only reason I am writing this is because I bribed one of the guards into giving me a pen. Auriga spent his money differently. He wanted to know about the wraith leader. So I value history, and Auriga values knowledge. Even now he is over in the corner, talking to the guard. We have been in this cell for at least a day, but there is no natural light so we can’t be sure. We are working on an escape plan. Jace has one sticky bomb left over from our “Illegal entry” and he is going to use it wisely.
Well banny has been complaining more than ever, so being in prison is even worse than I expected. Ill have to get back to writing soon, Auriga is calling us over to share his info.

zakazi
08-10-2006, 01:21 PM
Well Auriga had learned that the wraith leader was not on board the ship. He was a Wraithlord that was arriving in three hours. I told Jace we had to get out before then; no doubt he would interrogate us and learn human secrets. Jace agreed, but we’d need lots more than a sticky bomb to get out. That’s when we heard an explosion. And then another one. And then lots more. And then suddenly we heard a voice say over the intercom: “All military personal to the hangar. We are being boarded.”
That really got up a scare from the guards. Suddenly the prison was empty; except for us.
“Let’s go.” Jace said.
Jace blew out the side of the wall and we jumped out and ran out of the prison.
On the way out, Haul said, “Where are we going?”
“We’re going to the hangar, because that’s where the pilots are,”
“I don’t want to go to the hangar! I want to go to the armory and get my weapon back!”
Banny complained.
“He’s right. We need weapons.” Auriga said.
“Come on! Lets go, my feet hurt!” Banny urged.
So we went to the armory, and on the way there I asked Auriga several questions.
“Hey Auriga, what’s a Wraithlord?”
“It’s a powerful wraith figure, often political, that has a belief and tries to make the people believe it and follow him.”
“Oh yeah? Well then what’s his name?”
“I don’t know. The soldiers are afraid to speak it.”
“What’s his big idea? Why do people obey him so willingly?”
“His ‘big idea’ is that wraith society is growing and they need another place to live. Ragol is that place. But the humans are already settled into it. And in the wraith’s opinion, humans are nothing but trouble. They kill the animals and destroy the environment. So they must be eliminated.”
“But wait…then the wraiths will just kill stuff and knock stuff down, too. Just like the humans.”
“No, wraiths destroy no more than normality. When faced with a hostile animal, they pacify it with hypnotism instead of killing it.”
“What?!? They can hypnotize?!”
“Only animals. And they build their homes out of natural things, not metal or concrete.”
“Wow. But wait, how did they get ships then?"
"I do not know. Perhaps they stole them."
"I bet so."
We soon reached the armory and retrieved our weapons, only to find a small squad of pilots also gathering weapons.

Chapter 8.

EPT0678 Pilot Diary: Kaeda.

Before I had time to calm down after that short episode, they sent me out with a boarding party to storm the wraith ship. I was in a small strike crew of five members. I never got to know their names, but that’s okay because we called one another “Red 5” or “Red 2”
Because red was our strike team color. There were 6 strike teams, so six colors. So we
Landed in the wraith ship and shot all the hangar guards, which didn’t stop them from
Raising an alarm. We made our way to the armory to get explosives to detonate the fuel.

zakazi
08-10-2006, 02:42 PM
We reached the armory without incident, but when we got there we were in for a serious surprise. Five ground troops were there, raiding the armory.
“Who are you?” I asked.
“AUW3079 Assault squadron. Minus tech expert.” Said a tall FOmar with white hair.
“And you’re the commander?” I asked.
“Yes. I’m Auriga, the field commander.” Auriga said.
“Good. I’m Kaeda, the ‘field commander’ of these troops.” I motioned at my troops.
“This is Jace, explosives expert, Zakazi, melee expert, Banny, ranged expert, and Haul Lunar, magic expert. Corey was our tech expert, but he was taken prisoner.”
“Ah. That would explain why you’re one man short. Let’s get going and blow this ship up.”
“Men! Move out!” Auriga yelled. His troops scattered and went around the room gathering weapons and explosives. Within the hour we were all armed up.
Auriga began giving orders to his men again.
“Haul, Zak, take the east route and meet us at the engine room. Jace, Banny, you two take the west route. I’ll go down the center route and take Kaeda’s troops with me.”
“Yes sir!” most of his troops said. Banny sort of whined about it.
Two of his troops, Zak and Haul, apparently, split off and ran down the east corridor.
Jace ran down the west corridor and Banny stayed with Auriga and said,
“I don’t want to go with Jace! I want to go with you!”
“No, Banny, go with Jace.” Auriga replied back.
Banny whined but went down the west hallway. Auriga took my squad and went north.
I followed along, seeing as they were my troops he was handling.
Soon we reached the engine room and Haul, Zak, Jace and Banny were already there.” Good work, men.” Auriga said to his troops. “Jace, start planting explosives.”
“Yes, sir.” He said back.
In a quarter of an hour we were done planting the explosives, and Jace told us he had a detonator that would ignite the fuel and turn the ship into a firestorm.
“Make sure you don’t detonate it until we leave the ship,” Auriga reminded him.
Jace laughed. Suddenly the ship shook. “Jace! Did you just detonate it?!” Auriga yelled over the shaking. “No!” Jace screamed. Suddenly the lights flashed. “Ahhhhhhhh!” Banny screamed. The emergency lights flashed on a moment later. And then…everything stopped. It was all quiet. Even the laser flashes and the engine hum. And then…a strange looking human wearing wraith armor walked out of the shadows…and up to Auriga.

Chapter 9.

RAC7740 Saboteur Diary: Corey.

I’m glad I found you guys. I hope you will forgive me for all the bad things I’ve done.
I’ve killed most of the casts and Newmans…not Banny or Haul, though. I’m glad of that.
I never told you about the Newman disease I made, did I? I created a radiation-induced disease that 89% of all Newmans on the planet caught. 95% died from it. That left only a Small portion of Newmans who didn’t die from it. Haul couldn’t have caught it anyway,
He would have had to been on the planet to catch it. But what I really wanted to tell you is that I’m not angry at you guys anymore.

Chapter 10.

XMZ5107 Wraithlord diary: Slithzerakai

I am the Wraithlord, supreme force of the greatest army of wraiths. Our army is undefeatable. Not even the humans and their servants can destroy us. Perhaps I am only a pawn in this deadly game of destruction, between my leader and the human’s governor.
But I know I am an unstoppable force, showing the humans no mercy.
But I will die today. If this is a pitiful human reading this, then we wraiths have a sixth sense of when we will perish. And I know today is my day. But I will take many humans with me; I will not give up my life and soul easily. Perhaps I will retransform into a human; it is not rare for that to happen on a wraiths death day. But I am far too old.
I ride in a ship to the invasion army’s capital ship. I know that will be the place of my death. I may not even finish this journal before I arrive at the ship and face my doom.
So I will stop it now.

May humans fall today…

Chapter 11.

The Battle.

When the Wraithlord arrived, the humans were in the engine room, speaking with their lost comrade, Corey. The wraiths were getting ready to launch their offensive fighters.
The Wraithlord was writing his last Will and Testament, for he knew he was going to die.
The humans began firing on the wraith capital again and were dropping bombs on it.
But the small transport Slithzerakai was in was armed with high-quality photon lasers.
So he destroyed the first wave of human fighters and quickly boarded the capital ship.

He soon made his way to the engine where the humans had landed, and he destroyed the remaining ships. And then he waited. And soon the humans came.

Zakazi ran ahead of the rest of the group, and armed his Daylight Scars. All of their ships had been blown up! Everyone else pulled out their weapon and began looking around.
Suddenly he heard an ominous laugh. The Wraithlord dropped from the ceiling and charged at him. He flipped backwards and landed on top of some wreckage while Banny opened fire upon the Wraithlord. Slith turned to where the gunfire was coming from, and flicked his wrist. Banny flew across the hangar and made a heavy thud on the floor.
Jace barely cracked a smile. He pulled out a small red handgun and shot the Wraithlord on the wrist. Slith turned toward the meddlesome human and threw his long, hooked sword at it. Jace screamed in pain and fell on the floor, clutching his right arm.

Nice story, well told. A few things that are a little unexplained though.

First off, if only Ragol and Earth can support life, where did the Wraiths come from? They must have a home planet somewhere, or maybe they don't and the Wraiths are some sort of celestial being.

Secondly, how is blowing up the casts better than turning them against humanity (and newmanity ;)) considering it resulted in the destruction of capital ships? Surely everyone on board is dead anyway, so at least the living crew members could have defended themselves if the casts were battling them.

Lastly, if the wraiths only use all natural materials then what are their mothership and landers constructed from?

Keep up the good work though.

I looked over and saw that Jace’s arm had been severed and was now a stump. Everyone looked at him and Haul took the opportunity to attack Slith with his Elision. Slith screamed in pain and lashed out with his mental powers. Haul was blown across the room and he almost fell off into space. But I caught him and he barely made it. Auriga drew his double saber and jumped across the hangar to slash at Slith. Slith turned and saw Auriga before he hit the ground. Slith ducked and rolled to the right and laughed as the pitiful human hit the ground hard. Then he got up and flew through the air toward me. I couldn’t dodge him again, he was expecting that. So I left one of my Daylight Scars on the ground in an upright position and ran as hard as I could toward Jace. He tried to hit me, he shot fire from his finger tips, but I ducked and rolled, and the flames went over my head.
He shouted a curse at us and all humans as he hit my triple-bladed Daylight Scar,
Lying on the ground. And then all was quiet. We looked over and saw that he was dead.
All during this, Kaeda was in a state of shock. She couldn’t move. She might have been able to save the explosives expert, but she couldn’t move. She couldn’t even blink.
And then, in front of human eyes, the Wraithlord Slithzerakai perished. And Kaeda’s
Paralysis was broken. So it was induced by the Wraithlord. She thought to herself.
The humans stared at the Wraithlord’s corpse as it crumbled to dust before their eyes.
So, at last he was dead.

Chapter 12.
Epilogue.

After the Wraithlord’s death, humans and wraiths found that they had no reason to fight each other. All the wraiths had been under telepathic control. Not by Slithzerakai,
But by his leader. Slith had only been an extension of his leader’s mental grasp.
Now all the wraiths were free to do whatever they wanted, fight whoever they wanted, stay wherever they wanted. So at last, after only a week of war, humans had come to peace with a new species. Over time, casts and newmans began to grow again and as an order of the governor, all the surviving members of AUW3079 assault squadron were put
In cryogenetic sleep. And a few choice members of EPT0687 pilot squadron were frozen, too.
