Sonic Adventure 2: Battle.
Better 2p modes, and overall better story.
Sonic r is a sort of a spoof of mario kart...except sonic runs, tails flys, knuckles glides amy has a goofy sorta car...You get the idea.
It came out for the sega saturn.

Oh. If Sonic was in Mario Kart- that just wouldn't be right.
Mario: Sonic you need a kart! You can't run! Not only would you beat all of us, it's cheating!
Sonic: Sam won't let me borrow his car. And kart it spelled c-a-r-t. FYI
Mario: Duh but that's too plain and ordinary.
Sonic: Just like rescuing a Princess from some big creature that breathes out fire.
Mario: Don't give me that attitude Sonic!
Sonic: *sticks tongue out and runs away*

Sonic Adventure 2 Battle despite the random Knuckles/Rouge frustrations. The game overall is great. Good story, good control, just overall fun.

Sonic R was an innovative Sonic racer. Instead of driving around in karts, your characters ran, jumped, flew, and glided through the levels. It was a very interesting racing game. Instead of driving on a road, you could just fly across the lake/course if ya wanted to. It was quite short for a racer, and was a bit buggy (pop up and draw distance). But hey, it had 2 emeralds hidden in each course, an unlockable course, and unlockable robotic characters. I voted for it :D. Not the best Sonic game, but the best on the Saturn.

I liked the thing between Knux and Rouge, especially at the end of their fight. but now after playing Sonic Battle and watching Sonic X, the part of Knux and Rouge falling in love just seemed like a gimmick to get people intrested in the two of them being a couple. a disappointment for some people who thought strongly about it.

There was also Sonic Jam and the Marble Madness turned adventure game Sonic 3D Blast. The latter was not exactly liked by most people. It sucked as a Sonic game.

Sonic jam wasn't all 3d, granted sonic world was in 3d, but it was mostly a compilation title.
Plus, sonic 3d blast wasn't all 3d, it was just rendered sprites that looked 3d when you play it on a board thats shown on a 45 degree angle.

None of the 3D Sonics are all that great, but the best of them has to be Sonic Heroes. It's the only one that really somewhat feels like an actual Sonic game.

It controlled prety well on a 3D control pad.
Yes, innovative, unless there is another platform based racer that featured exploration aspects as well that you can name.

As for what people see in SA2...I don't know personally. I just find it fun.
I read some reviews, and apparently people liked it cause it didn't have the adventure fields and exploration aspects, which many considered "slowed down the game". It als had vastly fewer bugs, better voice overs (ableit just barely) and actually had a cool, new dark character, "Shadow". Shadow was probably the main character that won people over, as he was, and still is the deepest character in the Sonic universe (not that thats saying much). It also had fewer annoying game modes. Addmitabbly, it did have treasure hunting, but those were leagues better than the fishing and escaping levels of Sonic Adventure.
All in all, I think it was the graphics, Shadow, acting, improved chao, and lack of fishing/chasing levels that one people over.
I still think SA is better...It'd kill Sonic Heroes if Sonic Team only got off there lazy/rushed :):):):):) and fixed em. SADX was rushed, and shoulda been leagues better than it actually was. This is the main reason why I want an SA3...one more chance for ST to do it right...

The speed in Sonic Heroes was a big plus for me, I felt that the 2 Sonic Adventure games were both slowed down while Heroes reveled in its high speed gameplay. Speed and going as fast as you can has always been a high point in the Sonic series for me, And for most as well.
I remember when the original Sonic game out how I was amazed at how fast he was able to get, Yet he seemed to slow down considerable in recent years till Heroes and the GBA Sonic games

I liked all the 3d sonic games, and although sonic 3d blast and sonic R are different then the rest there still very fun games, and thats all that realy matters to me, is that they are fun to play. I'd say the DC ver. of SA1-2 were better looking then the GC ver, because of the shadows mainly, just look at em, and on PSO too. ick. I currenly have all the new systems, GC, Xbox, PS2, and every older system you can think of, DC still has more great games then any other system. out of the new systems xbox is best.
IMO. I also get the sonic comic and if you were wondering SA1 is the best 3d and sonic CD is the best 2d sonic game. 8)

THey were good for the platform genre though. Sure, not Metal Gear Solid, but it's better than anything Mario, Ty, or Crash ever came up with.
Sonic Heroes plot was actually painfully bad though. It got interesting now and then, but overall it was...crap I guess. The least Sonic Team coulda done was keep a paper thin plot along the lines of the old mario or Sonic games, rather than just throw in a bunch of pointless cutscenes.

nights had a bad storyline too but it was still class, sonic teams revolves around gameplay, even with shining force 3 which had a great story was because of camelot and the gameplay from sonic team

I've played both the DC games, Sonic R, and Sonic Heroes and I have to go with Heroes on this one. Some people hate the team system but I love it, and the best part is despite the character switching the base gameplay is still intact as Sonic can still home attack enemies and stuff. Tails and Knuckles' gameplay is WAY better than in the past two Adventure titles in my opinion. Tails is actually useful for attacking things now, a level 3 Thunder Shoot can take out most enemies with one blow, and it'll ricochet to hit multiple enemies too! And Knuckles at level 3 sending fireballs all over the place is just awesome, not to mention using Sonic and Tails as punching bags lol
My vote is Sonic Heroes :)
Edit: Oh and Sonic Heroes gets a point for having the sweetest final story too, Metal Sonic's new form is just plain sweet and I love how they did Team Sonic's part of the battle it's very creative how they make you use each formation to overcome his attacks and build your Team Blast meter. One of the funnest boss battles I've ever played in a Sonic game.

Sonic Heroes couldn't have been FURTHER from feeling like a real Sonic game.
In Sonic Heroes, you basically had NO fast levels! Except for the game's first level, you couldn't run fast for more than 5 seconds without having to stop dead in your tracks to use Tails or Knuckles.
Sonic Adventure 2 was the best, due to amazing plot execution, and great new characters.
Sonic Adventure 1 had more Sonic levels than Sonic Adventure 2, but Sonic Adventure 2 had cooler new characters, and a better overall plot.
The thing with Sonic Heroes was that Sonic Adventure 1 included an amazing backstory dating back hundreds of years, angering a beast who would later take revenge.
Sonic Adventure 2 featured an awesome plot, even better put together, focusing on both Hero and Dark sides, leading to an impressive ending.
But Sonic Heroes;where was the plot? I couldn't find it.

Where were the levels showing the trademark Sonic speeds? They weren't in the game, either. I notice that you didn't mention Sonic's usefulness. That's because he was practically useless in later levels in the game.

The main thing that p*ssed me off about sonic hereos was that they made the whole emerald gathering portion a near waste of time.
why bother to collect the 7 emeralds if you can't just collect 50 rings and turn into supersonic during gameplay? That blows.
Plus those special stages were pretty uninspired, it's basically the exact same thing as the sonic 2 boards, only with spheres instead of rings.

I use sonic all the time. When he is powered up tp level 3 he can kill most enimies in one hit like tails at lv. 3 but much faster.

"why bother to collect the 7 emeralds if you can't just collect 50 rings and turn into supersonic during gameplay? That blows"
Well, you needed to collect them in order to complete LAST mode, which was a battle against Metal Sonic, who suddenly appears, for no reason at all.
"I use sonic all the time. When he is powered up tp level 3 he can kill most enimies in one hit like tails at lv. 3 but much faster"
That was a problem with Sonic heroes, though. Very little room for risks. In SA games, you could take many risks, homing attack enemies in dangerous positions, etc. etc. etc. But in Sonic Heroes, you had better be careful, or you may have to do the 20 minute level over again.
So, every time I tried to use Sonic's homing attack, or light speed attack, he would miss the enemy, and fly off into death.
His only use later in the game was for bosses, and taking shields off enemies.

The player hasn't been able to use Super Sonic in regular gameplay in a LOOONG time zero. It was the same situation in the Advance games. I think the last Sonic game that allowed that ability was Sonic & Knuckles...

Might as well not bother with the emeralds and just let the story incoperate them to the last story for the final boss like in the sonic adventure games.

I think what they were trying to do was make the game like the Genesis games in the way that-in the Genesis games, if you get Super Sonic, you get the FULL ending.
I think they wanted you to get all 7 chaos emeralds, then you'd get the full ending. (but in this case, it was just to get the ending in general)
