View Full Version : Possible fix for Japenese Error
Gorge

Hello all, I was a poster that was stuck with the Japanese Error’s for Phantasy Star Universe. Although their have been many remedies that did not work for all of us posters, I hope that what I have just uncovered will help everyone get PSU running. Here we go.
Gameguard has one of these problems with your computer
1. Spy-ware is preventing it from starting PSU
2. You have a virtual drive installed on your computer, most likely through Alcohol 120% or Daemon
I have not been able to narrow it down to which of these problems it is. All I know is that I did a spy-ware cleanup and got rid of my virtual drive, rebooted my PC, and PSU started working. Here are the solutions to the following problems.
1. Spy-ware. To do a spy-ware scan I suggest Adaware pro 1.05. If you don’t want to use this program, your alternative can be spybot search and destroy (available here: http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10401314.html?tag=lst-0-1). I’m sure you can use other anti-spyware programs, just make sure that they have been updated with their latest updates. After you delete everything, reboot and try starting up PSU.
THIS IS ONLY IF YOU HAVE A VIRTUAL DRIVE INSTALLED ON YOUR PC
2. Virtual Drive. If any of you have ever mounted an .iso for a game or a program (for back up purposes only of course) then it is likely that you never uninstalled that virtual drive you created and it is still on your computer. KEEP THIS IN MIND: Even if Alcohol 120% is not running or is even uninstalled, there is a chance that the virtual drive is still on your computer. This was the case with me, I had a virtual drive but Alcohol 120% was not even on my computer.
If you do not have Alcohol 120go to this site and download the free trial (do not download Alcohol 52%):
http://trial.alcohol-soft.com/en/%
Once you have that downloaded go to File> Options> Virtual Drive (on right side)
Once you are here enter in the number 0 where it says “number of virtual drives” and make sure that “remount images upon system reboot” is checked off.
Hope this helps someone out!

So there's a very real possibility that the virtual drive is what's causing the gameguard error?
Gaahh...I wish I could get off work to test that. I wonder how many people who are having the jp error message have virtual drives.
Kudos for beating Sega Tchnical Support. You're a very luck man, and the envy of all of us who this won't work with.

Under my computer, if you have a virtual drive, there's usually like an extra CD/DVD drive shown.

go to my computer, on that screen it should show you what local disck drives you have and what cd/dvd drives you have. If you have 2 cd/dvd drives on that page but only have one physical cd/dvd on your computer, chances are it's a virtual drive.
I don't mean this in a rude way but chances are is if you don't recall making a virtual drive, you probably don't have one.

The fix did not work for me
I'm considering trying for a return/credit of my PC version and getting a 360 version. Don't know if it will work.

I'm sorry to hear that man, you did do the spyware scan with the latest updates for your scanner correct? It is very important to have those updates.

Is there anything else at all that your could possibly think of that you did besides ad-aware and alcohol 120? Are you still plugged into the router? Were you on the limited account when trying this? Specifics would be very helpful.

gorge, THANK YOU SO MUCH
all i did was completely uninstall alcohol and daemon, and it works. simply disablign the virtual drives did not work for me.
again, to people, try uninstalling alcohol and daemon tools.

On that note, try reinstalling alcohol and daemon and see if it'll recreate the problem.

I updated my spyware remover and tried the alcohol120. I also tried unplugging my router, but the error continued. I was wondering though, what do you mean by limited account?

Some people got theirs to work by creating a limited account under XP, and running PSU from there.

I've got this game on 2 computers now, same problem on both of them. Japanese error on limited, and lockup on admin. This computer now is brand new, been around for about 2 weeks, with no virtual drives installed. Ive ran spy sweeper and adaware, both updated as of today, and deleted all spyware on both, and none found on the second time through. Rebooted PC and no change... I do want to say this, when i installed the game on this comp and ran it the first time, i dled 10 itesm from gameguard, instead of the 8 i did on my other computer, odd? the last 2 items were much larger, 1 meg or 2

Whenever I run it, I get 8 files. Try deleting the gameguard folder, and redownloading the files by starting up the game. Do you still get 10 files?

Yes I am still going through a router. No I was not on a limited account either. The limited account thing is one of the most ridiculous fixes that I have yet to understand.
Also enable your windows firewall everyone. But make sure to unblock PSU and what I did is I unblocked all 12 files in the gameguard folder even though they were not .exe's. However I did this prior to the adaware and virtual drive fix and it did not work. Maybe the combination of the adaware/virtual drive fix and unblocking all the files from gameguard might do something for someone.

Possibly. How many peripheral devices with hard drives do you have attached to your computer? (Like mp3 players, etc)

Heh. I get one chance to run PSU and then i have to reboot... first try i get the lock up, second the gameguard runs and minimizes into the sys tray, and stops loading PSU, but there is no file for it in the task manager, so i cant end it, nor can i retry. All the things as of yet arent working

For you people trying to spy ware scanes I would use both Adaware and spybot search and destroy. Each of them will find stuff the other does not. By running both y ou have a better chance at cleaning your system well.

When you get those, post both dxdiag's, and let's see if we can find something. Also, look into the virtual drive fix that's worked for some. See if anyone is using Alcohol 120% or Daemon tools.
Thanks.

Changing the DEP settings only fixed the "Game closes when I click 'Story Mode' or 'Network Mode' before Game Guard."
As a side note, I'm experimenting with both Alcohol 120% (latest) and Daemon Tools (latest). I turned both on and mounted a CD. No problems, except an unusual pause on startup with disk activity. Maybe it's scanning the virtual drives?

Its possible that the virtual drives are slowing it down, but this comp doesnt have nor ever had daemon tools or alc 120.
