I know that it really isn't a series only having 2 games but what do people think?
I love Eternal Champions, I still play Challenge from the Dark Side all of the time. I mean come on 4 Finishing moves, more brutal than a Faces of Death video (...that may be going too far), 24 characters, and all kinds of different Tournament modes (something like 15). Even on Genesis it had an awesome mode called Battle room, I think thats what its called, where all kinds of things come out and you have to fend them off.
The most interesting finishing moves ( they put Mortal Kombat's fatalities to shame in my opinion).
Just about all of the characters had a move where they can get you out of a corner ( i hate cornering in 2D fighting games). And every character had a move that could knock away a jump kick.
Inner strength option so you can keep people form just depending on special moves.
Anyone not like this game? Why? I really want to hear why someone wouldn't like a game like this
If anyone from Sega reads this: Why isn't there a new Eternal Champions??

I loved the game, and think that the game was underrated... :) it never got the recognition and respect as a great game, that it deserved.

Let's see, poor hit detection, cheating computer opponents (which sega admitted), very little balance (Trident was easily the most powerful playable character in the game), and a nearly impossible 4 part boss... Even the character designs were, for the most part, pretty bland.
About the only thing it had going for it were those overkills, but they became nearly impossible to do in a real match because you had to have both characters in exactly the right places.
So, no, I don't think Eternal Champions is underrated. I think it may even get a little more credit than it deserves.
But hey, I also think Mortal Kombat gets WAY more credit than it deserves. Eternal Champions is much better than Mortal Kombat.

If you're talking about the Genesis version I must admit that I didn't really play it that often. I bought it and loved it and about a week after I bought it for genesis I found out there was a Sega CD version and instantly I sold the genny version and went for the Sega CD version. My opinions are primarily based on Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side for Sega CD.
I never had problems with the hit detection and trust me, Trident was not the most powerful playable character, what about Slash and Blade and the Dark Champion and the Eternal Champion? Yea the computer was very difficult but it was still defeatable, and end bosses took a long time to beat but there was a pattern that you could usually catch them in and exploit it. As far as balance goes, only one game balances better than this game and that is the DOA series. Just read what I wrote in the first part of the post:
Just about all of the characters had a move where they can get you out of a corner ( i hate cornering in 2D fighting games). And every character had a move that could knock away a jump kick.
Inner strength option so you can keep people from just depending on special moves.
The stage fatalities only require the victim to be in the right place. The Overkills and Sudden Deaths just took skill and planning and sometimes luck. A lot of times I didn't try to do them but they were definitly a pleasant surprise. But even if you didn't have the skill to pull off the stage fatalities you could always do a vendetta which is basically like a Mortal Kombat finishing move.
The game was more deep than you probably realized and you just never played anybody (human) that was good at the game I'll bet. It's definitly better as a human vs. human game if you ask me.

Well, the genny version only had the stage fatalities.
And that's what I'm basing my opinions on
As far as most powerful goes, I don't mean each hit does the most damage - I'm talking about the fact that with a full inner strength bar, you can take down 1/2 of your opponent's life bar if you can hit with a fireball (which you often can).
The eternal champion was not a playable character in the genesis version.
The cheating AI remark I made was not that the computer was too good, but that it was allowed to do special moves with impunity, whether or not there was any inner strength remaining.

Sorry for that misunderstanding but the Sega CD version seems to have fixed all of the problems that the gensis version had except that the characters are the same looking. I actually liked the character designs myself. The Trident fireball thing has some truth to it, you can do the fireball and pull off 2 different combos that i know of and get their life down to half but most characters can deflect projectiles and it usually backfires on you if you are playing someone skilled. Besides every character has a combo or 2 that can bring the opponent down to half but most of them are very hard to pull off and can leave you vulnerable. Trident's just happens to be easy to pull off.
So in your honest opinion you think you would like the game better without the flaws you described with the genesis version?

back then probably. but now probably not. Too many other great fighting games with a little faster pace.

hey shut the :):):)! up.....ETERNAL CHAMPIONS is one of the best fighting games in my opinion....at a time of videogame clones n undeep fighters.it was too deep..........
especially the system that regulated special moves so they can't be used over n over..........
if u took out the fatalities n blood it would still stand on it's own....too damn good but too advanced for it's time...it didn't had the flash or marketing of sf2..mk2...or an arcade cabinet..that was it's biggest down fall....if those was done it would have been u huge success to this day..!!!!sega missed out..
i wish sega remade this game ETERNAL CHAMPIONS 3...with graphics like guilty gear x2...n tight gameplay like vf4 evo...IMAGINE THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
