Next Xbox to skip hard drive?

Microsoft's flash memory deal fuels rumors that the console will be hard drive-free.

Flash memory maker M-Systems announced on Wednesday that it has signed a contract to provide storage products for future versions of the Xbox, bolstering speculation that Microsoft may ditch the game console's hard drive.

M-Systems, best known for its DiskOnKey line of flash drives, which attach to a PC's Universal Serial Bus port, said in a statement that it has signed an agreement with Microsoft to develop "customized memory units for future Xbox products and services."

Ronit Maor, chief financial officer at Israel-based M-Systems, said the company could not discuss details of the contract. But Maor said the devices under development would be of significantly higher capacity than the 8MB Xbox memory units Microsoft currently sells to save game and user data. "What we're going to offer for the Xbox doesn't currently exist," Maor said.

The M-Systems announcement comes shortly after Microsoft revealed plans for expanding Xbox Live, the online game service it runs, to include limited online storage capabilities. The combination has bolstered speculation that Microsoft will drop the hard drive from the next version of the Xbox to cut production costs for the money-losing console.

Microsoft representatives declined to comment on the company's plan for next-generation Xbox hardware.

Jay Srivatsa, a senior analyst at research firm iSuppli, said the Xbox hard drive so far has been used mainly for ancillary functions like saving progress in a game, not to improve the way games work. Sacrificing the hard drive could be a relatively painless way to trim $10 or $20 per unit from production costs. "I can see why they'd attempt to do that--the hard disk usage on the current Xbox has been pretty minimal," he said. "At some point, this has got to be a profitable business for Microsoft. They have to draw some lines; look at what can they take out."

The current Xbox will gain another storage option late this year, when Microsoft releases an "extender kit" for attaching the console to a PC running Windows XP Media Center, noted P.J. McNealy, an analyst at American Technology Research. That and expanded online features could obviate the need for a hard drive, he said.

"If the network is robust enough to handle some of the processing, and you have a fast-enough connection, you can push some of the functionality of the hard drive back onto the network," McNealy said.

Richard Doherty, president of research firm The Envisioneering Group, said adding recording functionality to the Xbox's DVD drive would be a cheaper way to provide storage than a hard drive and would rob hackers of one of their primary tools for making the Xbox perform unauthorized tricks. "The hard drive became a liability in relation to those units that were hacked," Doherty said.

you know why they might not put an HD in is because of all of the damn WAREZ MONKEY'S out there. It just goes to show that those of us who follow the rules with console modding and other chit get screwed because some a-hole is to lazy and cheap to actually buy the damn game. I really like the HD in the Xbox because I've modded because i have it in my car and don't want to carry around all my damn Xbox games. So i just loaded them up on the HD and ready to play and i own all of the games that i have put on the HD.

from what i hear this will be better.

- bootlegging will slow down
- the system will be 15-20 cheaper
- dvd re-writables
- no hard drives crashing and destroying all the saved memory

i say go for it ms... i hope nintendo does the same.

WTF. Yeah here for all the people complaining... You saved 20 bucks off the price and now have to buy 3 or 4 FORTY DOLLAR MEM CARDS.....

there's no need for memory cards either seeing if you can save your game and download things onto the CD.

Thats IF you have a fast enough connection, I just dont trust or like sucking stuff through the internet, no matter how fast the connection. Second, it saves atleast $35, when I read Opening the Xbox the most expensive component was teh HD and it was about $50, not the GF3. (top of the line at the time)

and if anything, warez monkeys help Xbox, Dreamcast had a spur in sales when pirating occured, but did you see that many pirated games much less many people pirating (the hardcore ppl copy 40+games) No one really copied 1-20 games, it was a small # of ppl who knew what they were doing. For Xbox, it requires even smarter ppl to open it up, switch the HD, transfer the data, change the custom Windows software to facilitate 8+ gigs (All xbox's think they have 8) and be able to copy entire DVDs to the HD AND read the games from the HD to play them. Its just way too complex for the average college student. Let the warez monkeys do they thing, just make the task complex and tedious enough to the point where they get sick of copying the stuff for their friends.

what about a multi disc game that you need the saves to go to the next disc? come on, tell me. WHAT ABOUT CUSTOM SOUNDTRACKS TOO, for the love of god, dicklick programmers hardly allow that fuction and thats Xbox's larger selling pts. I remember talking to a guy in gamestop who sold his PS2 for an Xbox for the custom soundtracks, he was also looking for RPGs, I talked him out of a used Shenmue II becuase Ithought it was too slow. Poor guy, torn between RPGs and custom soundtracks which almost no :):):)king game supported. gtg

Ive said this before, BUY GAME ARTS, they could have purchased them 5 times over if they didnt :):):):) away the money on RARE(now im :):):):)ed at them) I would expect MS to know what they are getting intobut obviously they didnt and torched 300+ million banannas. Game Arts makes the best RPGs, they are a cheap easy alternative to Final Fantasy and Xenosaga. They have Grandia and Lunar. its all too easy.

Yea, we all have better ideas on how to spend Microsofts money. xd, ur a dreamer man.

Ms already embarssed themselves but comming into the console market and attemtping to buy out some of the most profitable companies. Companies arent just willing to sell out. I think after the bungie and rare purchases, people made it seem like it was as easy as adding employees to a payroll.

Here's my idea for how Xbox Next should handle everything HD-related.

I love the inclusion of the Hard Drive but NO it shouldn't be inside the console it should be external this time around. It sucks when games like PSO make you save your main game save on the HD and NOT on the memory card cuz then if your system gets screwed up and you send it to get repaired then they give you a new one and BOOM no more PSO save! Thank goodness I saved my stuff on the memory card, unfortunately I had to start all over though!

The custom soundtrack support is awesome, they should NOT take that away from us. If they do they're stupid, I've got hundreds of :):):)ing songs on my HD I ain't getting rid of them oh and by the way they'd better have a way to transfer the data to your new console because I'm NOT ripping all 290 songs over again cuz I got a new system!

As far as games not using it enough, Halo uses it a lot how else do you think they could have levels like Assault On The Control Room if they had to stream that sh1t from the DVD every time you got to a load point you know how long that would take? Putting it all on the HD makes that kinda thing painless. The reason other developers don't use the HD is because of porting from GC and PS2: they don't have HDs! Perhaps the other consoles should follow MS example and get a frickin' HD! Playstation 2 did and now they can have FF XI a game that can't be done without having an HD!

As far as the new memory unit thing goes, that doesn't necessarily mean that Xbox Next won't have an HD it means that M-systems is making memory units for Xbox Next. That's what memory cards for Xbox are called so essentially they're making an item that Microsoft normally makes themselves but now they don't have to. You guys are taking things the wrong way. The reason we're getting limited online storage is probably to backup things on your HD in case something screws it up. Whether you'd be able to backup your PSO save is questionable since being able to do so would bring about a lot of duping (not that there isn't a lot already) but Sonic Team should just give up on stopping that cuz they've obviously haven't been able to do sh1t to stop people from duping.

Anyway I think that MS should keep the HD for custom soundtracks and downloadable content sake (how the hell could you do all that without an HD?) but I'd like an external HD just in case something were to happen to my Xbox, then all my HD information would be safe :) it sucks losing your level 135 hunter in PSO because MS sends you a new Xbox!

If you haven't noticed....The levels on Halo are divided into small parts that erase from the memory when you move to another part. Why do you think in multiplayer your partner will suddenly appear right besides you after a new part of the level loads?

In Halo, the entire level gets downloaded to the HD, the load periods are when the data swaps from the HD to the main RAM. And as you may have noticed this process takes only a mere second compared to if the data was streamed off the disk.

Another thing that I noticed was that even after you turn off the Xbox the level data remains on your HD even after the power shuts off!

How would you know if it stayed on the harddrive? How could it if it's in the swap file?

Okay I turned on the system one day right? I loaded up Halo and started up Assault on the Control Room. There was NO LOADING SCREEN! In a split second the level started up.

Also it said in one of my magazines or on IGN or something, forgot where but I'll try to find a link :)
