Is my Chao half dead?

Kay, my Shadow Chao's like turning gray, or at least the spike ball above his head is. Is he dying? And I swear his stripes used to be way more red... and I seriously doubt it's my TV cause I've been using the same one since his stripes turned red.

your chao is just changing color, maybe its becoming advanced

So you're saying all this leveling up I'm doing is pointless. He's going to die anyways right? If you level him up, he will get a pink cocoon and remorph into an egg. Keep going and one day he might become a really special chao such as Chaos Chao and such.

how long do you have to wait after 99'ing all stats for a chao to morph again (mines a neutral hero chao)

I don't think anything's really going wrong with your chao, or your TV.
I'm thinking that its color is being altered by the types of animals and Chaos drives that you're giving it.

I'm really not too sure the signs that a chao is getting ready to die and/or go into rebirth. I remember back in the first SA that chao tended to walk with a sort of hunched over/ limp position when they were in the later stages of life. I think they took that out of the SA2 chao behavior...

Treat the Chao well, and it'll go pink after two evolutions. That is reincarnation. After reincarnating twice, give no chao drives to it anymore. EVER. Nor skill fruits, nor hero dark or chao fruits. Only stamina fruits that come from the trees, and ONE AND ONLY ONE of every animal in the game. THEN it'll turn into a Chaos Chao.

It'll never REALLY die if you treat it well.

There should be a way to port your chao from Sonic Adventure, 2 and from VMU and send them to your GBA and then to DS or Wii.
