View Full Version : Shenmue II on the sega dreamcast

The much-awaited second installment of Sega's hugely ambitious adventure is likely to be made extremely welcome by Dreamcast gamers, as Shenmue 2 packs another four discs full of entertainment. Heck, you can even start with your save game from episode one if you managed to finish it.
The game picks up with Ryo arriving in Hong Kong as he continues his quest to avenge his father's killing. It's quickly obvious that aesthetically things have improved further; the graphics are at times outstanding, with clearly little expense spared. The game itself follows a similar format to the original, as you explore, interrogate, fight and solve the puzzles needed to progress. Again, you don't have to do everything to get to the end of the game, and there's an awful lot of time needed to get there. It really is business as usual, and it's every bit as good as before to play.
On the downside, and presumably to speed the release of the game, Sega have dispensed with an English translation, instead opting for subtitles throughout the game. It's not the end of the world, but it does now require a much more concentrated effort to play. And while it's not hard for those new to the franchise to dive in here, familiarity with previous events is still a help.
Nonetheless, this is a compelling and cinematic title, and while it doesn't add an awful lot in terms of gameplay to the first game, Shenmue 2 is an excellent, well-written adventure that's well worth taking the time to explore. --Simon Brew

LOL yeah. When the Japanese and Euro versions came out in 2001, Sega and Microsoft announced it would be delayed in North America and made an XBox exclusive. The XBox version came out in 2002.
The DC version only came out in Europe and Japan. To play the European version, you're going to need a boot disc like a Game Shark or DC-X.

Seriously though, your sort of getting ripped off paying 40 bucks to play a imported old :):):):) game. Take into consideration you need a bootdisc/mod chip just to play it on dreamcast, not to mention, the whole damn game is in Japanese...with english subtitles...
Were the shenmue 2 can now even more recently be bought at the bargin bin of your gamestore for x-box for about 12 bucks now, and it's in spoken english, with improved textures. :D

I'm sure most of you know about this website but...
http://www.planetxbox.com/shenmuedojo/
It shows that there are plans for Shenmue III. Also, Suzuki-san announced that Shenmue III is in development (oh yea!). Shenmue II was great (EUR version) and I would like to get the XBOX version some time over the rainbow.

...unless of course your a European gamer, or own a European version of the game, which would make the DC version a better buy, mainly cause you can then actually tranfer your files from Shenmue 1 to Shenmue 2 8).

That's why I'm probably gonna get a japanese versoion for myself. buying that and a dc-x boot disk would be cheaper than an x-box system and the game for x-box.

Yeah, that's true, but x-box is better cause it has less slowdown.

from what I've seen, they're almost identical. only x-box has faster load times and is in english.

And it has no slowdown. Slowdown was a killer in the Dreamcast version and the Xbox version has the blur effects (so it looks better).

No I's superior actually Apart from slightly better loading times, and better Water effects both versions more or less look the same.
The big diff is the DreamCast version hasn’t got that lame English dubbing , that reminds me of watching Westernized dubbing on a old Jackie Chan film .
It’s some of the worst voice over ever in a Video game. Plus you can play the DC version in lovely VGA

On the Xbox version you can use HDTV...
And the dreamcast version doesnt have the unlockable shenmue manga.

The blurring effects in the xbox version almost tricked me into thinking I had eye damage, I preffer the DC version.
I am going to get the ltd edition of Shenmue II for my DC :P

Yeah true but how many people have HDTV. Not many (in places like the UK. There's loads that have accesss to a VGA Computer screen.
Plus the bouns stuff in the X-Box version is lame. And that bad english dub really does make all the diff.
BTW The JP LE Shenmue II is very nice (if you're a big VF fan). The only bad part is the size of the window used to show off VF 4 clips
Yeah I agree with Team Andromeda (great company by the way!) I much prefer the Dreamcast version over the XBox one. I own both (because I have no life...and a pink bathroom )
The graphics look pretty much the same to me- but the 'blurring' effects you guys speak of- I did not like. Like GearGuy said- made my eyes 'bleed'.
Yeah the loading times are better- but by how much? It's not like you have to wait around for a long time for it to load, just a couple of seconds- I won't have been able to do anything else in that time other than breath a couple of times or blink.
The lack of slowdown (in the XBOX version) is a good thing I agree- it does make the gameplay run that little bit better. But I am used to games with slwodown and I had no complaints against it on the DC.
-But the main thing that wins me over is the stupid American dubbing on the XBOX version! -I felt like ripping the speaker out of my TV just to stop the pain. It is incredibly annoying when you walk up to someone and ask them something that you really need to know- and they say some inane thing and walk off, or they keep repeating themselves when you ask them something twice, by mistake. At keast in the PAL version you can just look at the Subtitles when you need information and look away if you are no longer interested- the sounds of Japanes voices is so much more soothing than the American 'slang' that comes out in this game -bad Japanese-translated slang. Sorry if this offends anyone- but it's true.
Dreamcast version is better, fun wise. XBOX is better performance wise.
And I always opt for fun factor over performance or graphics anyday.

The Japanese voices are much better though. (Espechily Ren. He has a KICK @$$ Japanese voice. Seriously, that guy did an awesome job.) Also, the games don't look THAT different. The DC version is even more impressive on some ways. For example, the DC version has more people walking on the streets. (many people on the Workers Pier were dropped from the Xbox version to eliminate the slowdown.)
Anyway, I think it's cool to own both. It's cool to play through the game and experience different languages.

old :):):):) game.
Age does not bother me, and $40 is cheaper than most games in the UK =\
The XBOX version costs more over here.
I like both versions, but the sound quality in the XBOX version is slightly lower (I have no idea why they downgraded the sampling rate on some sfx), also the Blurring in the Xbox version made my eyes feel damaged.
Although the Xbox version has ryos jacket nicer =)
And I like the manga and the cg movie (which is available on standalone release btw) =)
I find the fact you people are argueing over whether the DC or Xbox version of ShenII is better, kind of.... pathetic.. really....
