This is pretty much a no brainer...Super mario sunshine...
At least with super mario sunshine, you didn't have to revisit the same boards 5 times just so you can face a boss..

I think that Super Mario 64 was the perfect platformer. It's graphics, gamplay and the size of it's worlds (for an N64 game) were top notch. Mario Sunshine wasn't anything but great, but I just think it wasn't as revolutionary, SM64 started 3D platforming. SMS built upon it.

Super Mario 64 because it was the first time I've seen mario in 3d and I just simply enjoyed it more than I did Super Mario Sunshine.

Yeah, I can't really bring myself to replay sm64....
What a stupid premise to extend gameplay...
Uh...yeah, you beat the first 5 levels...but un...you still need #many stars before you can fight Bowers...so go beat the boards again, 3 or 4 more times...

I still haven't collected all the stars. I do like the amount of items they put into the levels. I mean yeah you have to play them more than once, but even then there were still a lot of levels and it was the only way to make a truly long Mario game with the N64's cart. size. The level I hated is this one that has a sunken ship in it and an eel is in the window and it pops out. ugghhh. That was scary stuff for me at that age.

This is a no brainer. Super Mario 64 kicks Super Mario Sunshine's boring :):):).
Super Mario 64's levels at least had variety to them. Super Mario Sunshine's all looked the same. They all played the same too. In SM64, you could be walking underwater, flying in the sky, or swimming underwater. No such luck in Super Mario Sunshine. All you do is fight retarded bosses. (OOH...let's pull this cork out of a squid's stomach. fun...)
But also, SM64 knew when to be serious. Before bosses, with dramatic music, you had to do difficult levels to reach them. But in SMS, the cheery, happy mode lasts through the entire game. And the villain; BABY BOWSER. WHOa......REAL THREATENING. Is anything in SMS as cool as the clock level in SM64? Anything as cool as racing a penguin down an icy track? Anything creepier than that haunted house?
Is anything in Super Mario 64 as stupid as that squid boss? Is anything in SM64 as stupid as the constantly light hearted nature of Super Mario Sunshine? NO.
SM64 kicks Super Mario Sunshine's kiddie @$$.

YOu took the words out my mouth! 8)
SMS had no variety to it, and all the levels felt the same, with G@y sunshine every level. The whole game was way too easy, and the final boss(if you wanna call it that) was a joke. And the ending made me want to scream.....FLudd dies...oh no!. Oh and spraying everything with water got borign fast.
WHiel Mario 64 was a bsically perfect game. It had variety, and NO two levels felt the same. It had everything: Lava, Water, FLying, haunted house, floatiing platforms in sky, and a innovative clock level. I was scared to play the haunted house levels at first lol
It also had little side quests like the one where you had to catch that dam bunny. I musta spent hours catchign that bunny over and over, lol 8)
Then comes the fun/challenging Bowswe battles, those were intense fights, and you felt good when you finnaly beat him.
ANd to top it off they threw Yoshi into the game!
Overall:
SMS ~ Dont; get me wrong, SMS wasn't still a fun game, but it bordered more on the Average side, not the Kick-azz mario games I'm used to.
Mario 64 ~ Closest you can get to perfection in a game :)
My 2 cents...

Super Mario 64 for this very reason: (and it's already been touched on) VARIETY. Like gaunlet said, swimming underwater, flyin up the skies, ALSO explorin haunted mansions, lava-filled areas, deserts, clock towers, ridin carpets, and how can I for get about those SUPER POWERS, wing cap mario, METAL mario, and who could f*ck with INVISIBLE MARIO???? HAHAHAHAHA. Compared all that gaming greatness to just, ISLAND LOCATIONS and a WATER PACK in Sunshine???????
This should prove to everyone that it really does take more than just BETTER grahpics to make a great game. Thanks peeps for remindin me how GREAT A PLATFORMER Mario 64 really was, by far SUPERIOR to sunshine in just about every way (aside from graphics of course), challenge, variety, REPLAY value (the variety in levels helps to do that) Old polys YES, but it was a more ENJOYABLE expirence if I must say myself. THIS is the formula Nintendo needs to go back to for Mario 128 bring back the VARIETY with BIGGER levels, add even more (new and old) super powers, with the "?" blocks and make Luigi a second playable character! Man if they do that much for mario 128, it'll be a KICK-A$$ platformer! HEH 8) It's really what Nintendo needs right now a BETTER mario game.
