"sega" might have done everything first but not the "DC" specifically.

i would say the most advanced system for it's time was the Panasonic 3DO

If you think about it, SEGA isn't being an Idot.. you are.. (j/k).. no but really SEGA is making a great choice. They can't make games for a system they don't have.. so there doing the obvious and making it for other systems.. this way they will get 3 times the money income.. I think its pretty smart

In terms of physical space I would say that there is a tie between the Philips CD-i and the Microsoft XBOX. The CD-i is wider and has more depth but the XBOX is thicker in height. Both weigh about the same though. In terms of what I think is the best...I would probably vote for the Sega Saturn. It has the most games that I enjoy the most. The Dreamcast comes close though with great titles like Rez, Metropolis Street Racer, Shenmue II and Headhunter...

That is pretty smart!
Maybe after like 3-5 years, they can overcome their financial loses and make a new system!

Well, as for the biggest game system, in terms of size, would be a toss-up between the Arati 5200 and the X-BOX. As for greatest, I would have to say the NeoGeo CD. Kudo's to SNK for porting flawless arcade games to the system. After that, it would have to be either the Sega Saturn, NeoGeo Pocket Color or the SNES.

NeoGeo CD. A wonderful system that was forgotten by many. Only if SNK had advertised. Saturn comes as a hairline close second because it had excellent ports also. And it is affordable.

As much as I love my Dreamcast- I'll have to go with my little (well medium sized) black box- The great Sega Saturn. So many great exclusive games for it- and arcade titles that have never lost their brilliance (in my opinion) like Sega Rally, House of the Dead, Virtua Cop, Sega Touring Cars, Daytona USA etc....
But the Dreamcast will come in a very close second, followed by my Megadrive (Genesis) :P

Hey, I'm confused. Is the poll ment for the biggest system or the greatest? If it was for the biggest, I certainly wouldn't have picked the DC. But if it was for the greatest, it would be one of my choices, indeed.

HMMM- What about the MegaPC??? Surely that could be considered the 'Biggest'.

I don't know if it was released in America - it was a PC and Megadrive (Genesis) in one! Hence the name Mega(drive)PC :P . Basically (as far as my understanding goes) It was an old 486 PC with a Megadrive built in and slots for Megadrive controllers and a cartridge slot on the front. But it didn't sell very well. :?

But my point is- can we count that as the 'Biggest' console- as it was the size of a PC.

Yeah, the DC is the greatest, but I would think that the biggest, in terms of size, would be either the Atari 5600 or the X-BOX. Dang, that Atari was big, for back then. Oh, and as for the computer/MegaDrive combo thingy, I'm not sure if that would count or not...Ah, what the hay, why not?

I remember that one, it`s in the same magazzine where I saw Sonic for the first time, it was called Teradrive.

BuzzTron_451
07-02-2004, 12:02 PM
Tera? Mega? Well, which one is it? :?

~G~
07-02-2004, 03:57 PM
Aha!

I have just done a bit of (very) quick research.
There were two very similar products.

The MegaPC was made by Amstrad and was basically a PC with a Megadrive attached (well still looked like a normal PC-but you know) And you had this cover thing which you slid to one side to use the floppy disk drive and slid the other way to reveal the Cartridge slot for the Megadrive.
-That's the one I remember seeing.

Then you have the Teradrive- which is made by IBM. Which was more of a proper Hybrid PC/Megadrive combo thing.

The problems were that the Amstrad version was a shoddy design and not very well constructed- and was limiting in the PC-Megadrive connectivity.
The IBM one was well made- but the SPecs were two generations out of date when it was released. The Teradrive was a 286 PC, where the MegaPC was a 386- and I think the MegaPC was released first.
Though appareantly the Teradrive could be used to help with Megadrive game development or something???

-Well hope that helps somewhat (not bad for 2mins research me thinks) :P

That's good to hear. So they were 2 different thingy's, yet they functioned the same. Bery Intelesting...I like teh Tera bedda.

~G~
07-03-2004, 02:35 AM
Yeah the TeraDrive does seem better- apart from the lousy Specs. You could play the Megadrive and PC at the same time- apparently. But with the MegaPC you could only have one at a time.

But this has got me into thinking- do you think it would be possible to make a system like this- but perhaps a DC in a PC?? or something. You can buy most of the spare parts for the DC off Lik-Sang or Sega Parts.com and a few other sites.

I think it would be really cool. I know how make PCs quite sufficiently (hell I made the one I'm on at the moment)- but I'm not too sure on my abilities to construct a Dreamcast and have it working in the same unit as a PC.
Do any of you Uber geeks know anything about this?

BuzzTron_451
07-03-2004, 10:56 AM
I'm not sure how to do this, but I'm pretty sure someone else might have the know-how. Don't you just love combo things? A DC is sorta a PC in itself, minus the Hard-Drive, and other stuff.

~G~
07-03-2004, 11:51 AM
Yeah I guess it is.

I remember when Sega were first making it tehy said that it might be having a WinWord and a couple of other PC related pieces of software- what with it running WinCE. But they decided against it in the end- and just to make it a truly decent Game oriented system- and I personally think that they succeded!

- Talking of having a hard disk, my friend is trying to work on a way of connecting his DC directly to a hard drive- so he doesn't need to save to VM units.
But at the moment he hasn't been very sucessful. But he has got one of those memoy cards that links directly to your PC- and you can store your save games on it and upload them to the internet- which is nice. But still it can be quite annoying when you have to retieve an old save file off your computer.

How does NES only have two votes?! I mean come on, I loved the Dreamcast, but it isn't the greatest console ever. NES or Genesis, but not Dreamcast, and def. none of the next gen stuff. It has to be one of the original greats (NES, Genesis, Atari, Coleco., etc) because that was gaming in it's purest form. It was just for fun. There were no "casual gamers" allowing for the plethora of crappy games made today. Sports titles sold the same amount as every other type of game. SUPER MARIO BROS. PEOPLE!

Xbox and PS2 have HD and your friend it`s trying to conect his DC in one to save games right? What else can you do with it? Can you download some software?

Err I think so...I'm not entirely sure to tell you the truth. I think he's hoping that you can download software with it- like an emulator or something and just load it staight off the the Harddisk instead of having to use a burned CD. And you can download it directly to the DC.

Or I think that he might try and use it with DC-Linux. He is always playing around with it- but because you can't really save anything he finds it annoying. That way he can develop games for it or something :?

But if he makes it successfully- I have a copy of DreamStudio (the RPG maker) and the only problem with Dreamstudio is that you have such a limited amount of space on the VM unit. If we have just a few hundred Mbs of space to save a file- then we could make a pretty darn decent game! At the moment we can only make mini adventures on our VMUs. Which is shame. And my friend is also going to try and see if we can simply copy the save file and take some of the coding off the Program Disk and burn it to a new disk- so that for people to play our game they wouldn't need a copy of Dreamstudio. If we do that we could put it on the net and give it to people like you guys to play  -which, before you say anything, shouldn't be illegal- as the whole idea of Dreamstudio was to make your own games and put them on the special website for people to download to their VMUs and play with them using their own copy of DreamStudio. Good Stuff 8)

At first, the DreamCast was going to be called "Kitana", and it was going to look like a computer hard-drive, with 4 controller ports coming out of it.

Correct me if I'm wrong- but aren't emulators Legal? -Isn't it just downloading/pirating the games that is illegal- unless you have the original copies.

So if you had a DC emulator on your PC- but you used proper DC games (somehow- what with it being GD ROM) then isn't that ok?

BuzzTron_451
07-06-2004, 11:19 AM
Well, emulators' are legal, yet roms/rip files are not.
So yes, you could go ahead and tell us where/what it is.
