View Full Version : Can I still buy a new DC or get mine repaired?

I have had my dreamcast since launch day (9-9-99), and while its not breaking down or anything, the controller ports are starting to not be so responsive. I had the same problem with my genesis back in the day. It seems like I need to prop up the controller ports so that they make a connection with the system.
First of all, do you think this is a controller port issue, or a system port issue? Either way, can I still buy either one of these (controller or a dreamcast) from sega? Can I still send them in for repairs? I wouldn't mind buying a new system either. Although I know they stopped production on them a long time ago, I still think sega might have a few new ones. As we all know, the DC never really tore up the sales charts :( . I'm starting to worry I might not be able to play my DC again.

Ok your in luck, you can't get a new Dreamcast but they do still offer repair services.
here is what you do.

REPAIRS
Be sure to carefully follow the steps below for Sega's repair service (U.S. & Canada only):

STEP 1 - CREATE A LETTER WITH THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION:

Your name
Your address
Your phone number
The Serial Number of your Dreamcast
A brief description of the problem
An inventory list of what's in the box you are returning to Sega.
STEP 2 - PROVIDE PROOF OF PURCHASE FOR WARRANTY OR CHECK FOR REPAIRS.
A copy of your receipt of purchase must be included for warranty verification purposes. If your unit is less than six months old, the repair is under warranty. If you do not have the purchase receipt, or your unit is more than six months old, include a check made payable to "SCI/Sega Repair" for the amount of $55.00. The repair charge includes: all parts, labor, return shipping, and a smashpack software game.

STEP 3 - PACKAGE YOUR DREAMCAST FOR SHIPPING.

Carefully box up the unit and all necessary peripherals (Please, NO Non-Sega Products!) and ship it INSURED, either UPS ground or US Mail. You must also send it registered, so that the package can be traced if lost. For your own records, write down ALL serial numbers and parts sent! Make sure the package contains your letter (STEP 1) so we have all the information required to provide you with the best possible customer service.

yea, thanks. Have you ever sent your DC in for repairs? If they just do a general check for faults, I don't think they will notice the loose controller ports, as they tend to only die out once in a while, or if the cord is bumped a little bit. It's not like it won't read the games. If they replace everything and basically send me back my DC shell with new stuff inside (like microsoft does with the xbox), then this is definitly worth it.

It's the resistor on the controller board, that has probally blown.

If you can solder, do a Google for a tutorial.

And it is possible to get a new DC, I got my Brand New Sealed DC off eBay.

gamestop is dicontinuing carring DC and all the DC stuff is marked 30% of listed price if you can find one there still or go to Rino (same kinda store ) and there they are $25....i just got one cause the gamestop's in my area had no more...and mine had stoped reading disks because the little motor that moves the laser eye back and forth stoped working so i took it apart and found that the brushes and comutator were worn out i tried to repair it but the brushes are just little pieses of metal and to worn to do anything, i did get it to work alittle but thats it.

Im curious, and this is a question for admin. Insuring the item would be def to do. However, I would like send in my original DC, and have that shipped. That one cost like 200+ dollars since thats what I payed for it, but they do not cost any where near that. Should I insure it for 200 or for mkt value for today? I would think 200 since thats what I payed for it.
