Amy is an evolving character, she can be both weak or extremely strong depending on the event. Heck, she destroyed E-100 (aka Zero).

Shadow is an overrated character with too much of a fanbase for his own good. An often forgotten fact is that chaos control is not even a power exclusive to him; Sonic has it too. Amy = better than Shadow (IMO), she is quite a bit more unique a character, but still does not match up to Sonic; Sonic is the one who started it all.

Amen, brother. The other choices for the character in the original game were a wolf, a bulldog, a pajama-wearing version of Eggman, a squirrel, etc. The hedgehog won out over all of them based solely on design. Can't remember which issue of EGM that article was in, though.
