Ok, i'll admit it, i know NOTHING about wireless networking... So here is my question, what do i need to buy to add to my computer so that I can access my internet connection wirelessly with the DS?? And then when i have this thing "broadcasting" my internet connection, does the DS just pick it up and connect to it??

You need a wireless router, connected to a cable or DSL modem. Then it will just recieve it and use it to play online.

I got my wireless router at Best Buy for like 50 bucks with a mail in rebate. Yea, now my laptop gets a signal, so I guess the DS will to! :D

It will first need to be set up to recieve LANs(which will be what you are creating by setting up a wireless router), but you do not need to buy anything to do this, I assume it will have something in-game for this, like PCs.

Yea you need a Wireless Router. I have a D-link one that hooks up all the computers in my house to one solid unit. Bellsouth modem and the router distributes the online signals. I think the DS will just act as a computer somehow and recieve the signals by programming it to your wireless home network.

Keep in mind, there are two forms of wireless on the DS and multiple ways to use the WiFi method.

It first has the GBA compatible wireless (i.e. compatible with the one that comes with Pokemon LEaf Green and Fire Red). This has about a 10 meter range. Not bad. No info on it's speed but... not as fast as wifi lol.

The wifi is claimed to be 802.11b, which should be 11Mbps. It could easily be upgraded to 802.11g (54Mbps in theory, really more like 22Mbps). Both are similar in arcitecture, and are compatible with one another. Line of sight should offer about 100 ft.

Now the networking lesson... Ever play a LAN game between multiple PCs? You don't NEED a router or internet connection to play multiple player (if they are doing this even a LITTLE bit like how they said they are lol). It sounds like they are using WiFi for range and speed at first, but NOT using the internet at first. They claimed using standardized wifi will "offer them the possibility to have online games". Basically, whenever a bunch of people get within a good 50-100 FT, the idea is they can all play against each other wirelessly. I believe they said 16 players are currently supported for Mario Kart DS but I am sure some games may be able to support more.

I think Nintendo is still fearful of online gameplay. They are probably right to be as such. The largest problem I see is that online games keep a longer term user base, and the user base usually out-lasts the matching service. Once the servers go down, there is usually no method by which to find other players. I think Nintendo is trying to work that out (possibly using Peer-to-Peer technology, so there wont need to be a central server).

not necessarily.. you can also use a plain old wireless switch.. and if your only using two devices then you can set up a hubless wireless network (AdHoc).. you can also do things like use a wired network and attach a wired/wireless bridge and set up an AdHoc through that :)

once you've done any of these you can set a machine as a gateway to route internet traffic :)
