Hey we would like to give you a chance to tell SEGA and Sonic Team what your favorite aspects of playing PSU are. You can give critical responses to this question, but please stick to the topic. In all fairness I will start a second poll for people who are not currently playing to let us know why, because we need that feedback too.

I play mostly for the community and the friends I've made over the years.

I definitely like the gameplay, given that I have a lot of gripes about it.

I also enjoy doing the story missions and following up with the events that happen in the game, although that's not nearly as big of a reason as the other two.

I'll be honest, my friends are the main reason I play this game still, since I really don't get much time to spend on it to justify the monthly fee.

It's good to see chill doing things like this though, community feedback is always a crucial part in the success of any online game.

Tough question really.
I'm afraid that I must say "None of the above".

I guess it's the simplicity of the game and that it's rather laid back compared to other MMORPGs. Well ok, it could be considered gameplay, but under that I normally understand different things.

There is both on and offline... a true mmoRPG. ^^ That and I can play with buddies and dress up my cutie lil chara ^^ It interlaces the story and online play so it really feels like a more believeable world/scenario... unlike FFXI where its just a world and you fight in it... there's no RPG feel to that. But PSU on the other hand is awesome because there is pretty indepth story that goes along side with the grind (lol)

I like
-finding cool new items
-showing them off
-doing massive damage to groups of monsters
-helping the party as much as possible.

I hate
-items that don't drop after 100's of runs
-people cry about the game being too easy
-getting booted at the boss boxes
-events take forever to get here

FIRST ONE TO SAY IT

I like the Gameplay, it solves a lot of issues I had with PSO's system, like not being able to turn while attacking. << The weapons are fun, some of my Favorites to use being Grenades, Machine Guns, Rifles, and Twin Sabers. I think there's a hell of a lot of room to improve, game has a lot of potential. Something I'd love to see is being able to move while in First Person view, adding a bit of a First Person Shooter aspect to the game.

It would be made of win if there was a Virtua Cop-y Shooting mission, or something.

I also like the thought of Airboard Racing, or maybe vs. Tank combat.

While I like the gameplay, I can't say it's enough to keep me here, especially since my mood tends to decide what games I play. The game needs more Distractions, Racing, Shooting, everything. With more distractions, it appeals to a larger player base, and will ultimately keep more people in the game.

I said "Mix", but it's a strong collection of each... not just a little bit of it. I know this game is popular in Japan, and at Anime Expo, A-Kon, Comic Con and E3 I ran into many people who had at one point played PSU or PSO... but none of them continued to do so. Why? Well, I'd guess the feeling of "this game is really for Japanese I guess" trickles all the way down from the belief of Sega's marketing-- that Americans just won't like it or something. I think we've demonstrated (at times) that this is not true, and that this game would do well... it just needs to be advertised and then maintained. We shouldn't be playing second fiddle to the Japanese audience-- they really should try and put us up there with them.

I mostly play for friends nowadays, but even that is lessening my playing times. Most of my friends don't play anymore, and that in turn leaves me not to get online besides for one person and gathering my Vol Coin(s) for the day. I used to spend hours on the game because there was always something to do with my friends, now I'm lucky if I even spend more than an hour and a half playing.

I agree with those who've posted before me in saying that the advertising/marketing and the rank of importance that Sonic Team puts for the Western player-base is pretty shoddy. I really like this game and it does have potential (even if it's too easy or whatever-- still a good game), but it's nothing without it's player base and if more people are leaving/reducing their play than those that are coming in, then I foresee a short lifespan for this game. And that's a shame.

Japanese updates motivate me to play this game.

I enjoy killing things with other people. Free-action gameplay motivates me to play this game.

Once my goals are accomplished (leveling up characters), my friends tend to have goals they wish to meet (usually item hunting).. I assist them, giving myself something to do. My friends and inexperienced players motivate me to play this game.

Reliving old PSO themes and/or music in an upgraded environment motivates me to play this game.

BIG numbers and/or flashy magic attacks motivates me to play this game.

Hope for a greater change to a great game, that still has potential, motivates me to play this game the most.. The story is just a bonus. Seeing my character doing cool actions in cutscenes and all..

While I dont like the gameplay quite so much as PSO's, it's the closest alternative. Unfortunately, that gameplay becomes null when there's nothing to do. I play this game for it's content, which I find there to be a severe lacking of. An update can last me a weekend at most before I get sick and tired of running the same missions over and over. An event like the 1up cup or Max Attack G is the only time when PSU sees a huge investment in time from me.

I enjoy running missions with my friends mostly. I tend to be the "rare hunter" in my "clan". I enjoy casually running missions with my friends and when they are offline I tend to hunt rares for either them or me. It is always nice when they log back on and I have that nice 11 or 12* rare waiting for them. They, however, haven't been on too much and it is starting to wear on me.

The biggest reason is gameplay so I vote that. Bad gameplay in my PSU is the only reason that would make me quit. But I also like story; and the community as a whole isn't that bad.

Claude

gameplay, all there is to it. This game is so far the best MMORPG or MORPG, whatever you wanna call it. Reason being it's not click-and-play/click-to-play. (Prefer the first for naming the 1000s of crappy games that use that system.) And the turn based system just doesn't work for MMOs. However, sadly the amazing potential is defeated by a massive lack of things to do, as I stated in the other topic.

Annah
03-26-2008, 09:37 PM
Votes all od the above, but in reality is 6 parts friends, 3 parts story (laia my love, i will make you mine!) and 1 part gameplay.

Gameplay would rate a bit higher if it was a little more varied. Not just only smackdown a bunch of monsters and then hope for something nice in the end.

Game play and items I guess. I like the combo system that Sega has implemented. MAJOR improvement over PSO. The items aren't bad, not as many as PSO's....

Imo, it's the ability to jump in a game and meet people while enjoying a laid back hack and slash type game. The game play makes it easy to jump in no matter how bad your palette is and things such as chat animations and cut in liven up the game atmosphere. Some of the most fun I've had on PSU was just spamming in or after a mission.

I could care less about the story in all honesty, but it is refreshing to see that MY character is included in the story now.

Time attack mission variants across all missions would be nice too. Add time penalty for any death (even with scape). Rewards based on time.

I play for the blue skies.

I guess the game play is what I enjoy most from that list. I like playing online games with friends, but I've never been much of a fan of shooting at them. We're all total suckers for levelling up though, and if it wasn't for this we'd probably spend endless hours levelling up in strategy RPGs.

I like Phantasy Star, instead of certain other games, as it allows us to work on a quick mission of an evening, or to spend whole weekends adding to our collections. But as much as I enjoy the game, I'd probably spend a lot less time on it if it weren't for the people I play with.

I do like the story and setting too, particularly the recent works on the story. Getting through the original story on the disc was a bit of a chore, but I do like the episodic story instalments despite the occasional troublesome puzzles that take hours (or a visit to Youtube) to solve. I like the sci-fi setting as well, as there seems to be an endless number of regular fantasy online games.

First, community/friends. when they go I'll go.

Second, gameplay. Actually i find the casual and EZ mode gameplay quite appealing to my life style now. For example, I consider FFXI a far superior game in every aspect to PSU [this is just my opinion, dont start a war on it kk], but also it requires me to pay attention to the game for long periods of time, and sometimes even have to adapt my RL schedule to fit that of a videogame. And I don't really want to be doing that [again].

Third, The brand name. Since I have been fan of the series since late 80's

Combat System. I haven't found another online game that really comes close to this. Just Attack alone has made a world of difference when I play a fighter character.

Anything that would continue to advance and propell this combat system further would be great. I'd still love to see something like multiple PA's on two-handed weapons (like what Wands get, but on guns and striking weapons too). More varied enemy attack patterns would make things more fun.

Getting rid of slowdown would also make the game more fun.

I came to PSU straight from PSOBB, and admittedly was one of the people who wanted PSU to be PSO ver8738782134. After playing for quite a while now (since November of launch year), I've generally enjoyed the time playing. Came close to quitting a couple of times though, mainly because I run out of things to do/get frustrated with update mess-ups.

I'll be honest- the main reasons I play PSU are because most of my friends from PSO moved to it. Without them, I don't think I'd have stuck around as long as I have. I barely play during the day, and only really play a great deal on the evenings, when my friends log on.

I'm not saying PSU is a bad game, its just not one I can play for extended periods of time, especially when it's quiet online (read: I'm European, when I get on, the servers are dead).

The gameplay is pretty nice now (I admittedly hated it when PSU first launched), but the introductions of things like Just Attack/Just Counter and many of the AoI improvements helped it out a lot. Also, making the droprates of version 1 missions easier was one of the best things to happen in the game, as far as I'm concerned.

Story mode I find less than great. I played through the offline story for the sake of seeing what happened, and the same for the online story. Episode 3 is so far an improvement, but some of Episode 2 felt like a punishment rather than fun (catching the beast boy, the HIVE power switch puzzle, etc). So no, I don't think Story has really played any role in keeping me playing. I'd say its mainly my friends, followed by steadily improving gameplay aspects.

Me, I play for lots of reasons... but most I guess come under the 'story' bracket - especially if my characters can be included in that.

PSU has the most potential for roleplay that I've seen in an online RPG in a long time, although admittedly the roleplayers I've encountered, while quite good at it, are few and far between. Actually I'd rather like something added to encourage roleplay, even if its just little things like space for a character profile somewhere. Faction alignment in some form or another'd be lovely and all but I can see That being freaking hard.

Beyond that, characters themselves have Immediate personality and feeling, which is primarily thanks to a character generation system I love to bits and just like playing with. Thanks to how good that is, I find I can take a bit of pride just in my characters, not in their stats - indeed stats kind of rank lowest in importance for me.

In order of importance:
Feel/Characterisation > Community > Gameplay > Items > Stats

The setting's really nice and, all, it feels like a Phantasy Star setting.. which is always good considering how much I like the PS series. Actually it feels like my favourite of the settings, the one found in Phantasy Star 2/Adventure.. just a bit more developed and flexible, with Neudaiz.. which is nice.

NekroMunky
03-27-2008, 09:13 AM
Definately a mixture of things. The combat system is way more fun than typical RPG's where it's Attack -> Wait your turn to possibly be attacked -> Ok now it is your turn to attack me. Leveling PA's and finding new items and etc is always fun. And the community itself is amusing.

There needs to be an other button.

Gameplay: meh, its not bad, but since I picked up Crisis Core i've forgotten about PSU. Probly will for a week more.

Community: Well, on the PS2/PC side its like a ghost town. The time get online changes (could be night EST or morning EST) from time to time. So my "friends" usualy are never on or on at different times.

Story: Meh, its good. But lets face it, Crisis Core has an infianatly better storyline. aside from that, the story comes out way to slow to really keep me interested.

So what keeps me playing PSU? its a way to keep boredom at bay for a bit. And the people are either good to chat with or awesome to make fun of (lol Mr. Blacknanoblastwithtwinaxes).

Back to crisis core. Materia Fusion is freakin awesome!

raujinn
03-27-2008, 11:24 AM
All of it really. I like action RPGs, so PSU is a genuinely fun experience to me much like PSO was. The items give me a reason to hope my luck pulls through and I get something shiney. The community for freinds. The story is fun too as its not really something I've really seen in the other MMOs I've played.

Its also a big improvement over PSO in so many ways, in my opinion. The fighting is much more fluid and the the UI is, to me anyway, much better.

Thats all my positives, PSU is a unique experience that I don't get elsewhere.

Gameplay and community. They're interrelated. When the gameplay begins to suffer in the eyes of others, they quit, and suddenly I have fewer people to play with and a smaller selection of weapons and materials to buy from stores. The opposite is also true; when there's a lot of content (a la 1up), my entire partner card list is online, and the whole game is fun again.

Ragnarok Knight
03-27-2008, 01:21 PM
It's a big mix of everything. It's also a great place to make good friends on the internet, almost rivaling MySpace in my own opinion, minus the stupidity and about a bazillion of the people, of course.

Also, the kind of description behind each individual player is generic, leaving you to make much of your character's background as your own. It's really cool, and given that there was a HUDless mode you could play in (Remember from Halo 2, anyone?), it would be an awesome place for machinima of all sorts.

I personally stay for the community. There are a lot of cool people and friends I've met in PSU and it's always a different story the next day. Gameplay is most likely the 2nd reason why I stay. I like getting those cool weapons that are worth millions and just show off sometimes

Really though I mainly stay for my good friends and guild members I have made in the past and I've enjoyed hosting events which I'm planning on another in a month or 2.

I play to play with friends. And the random super rare drop. WHich I am finally getting somtimes. But so many of my friends are gone now. Some people in the game I have noticed with these overpowered photon arts like the ultimite Axe and Sword. Seem to have developed God complexes. Thinking everyone else in the game should sit and wait so they can kill everything. And have since got bored and stopped playing or have just quit outright. You might disagree with my opinion. But that is my perspective. The same may be true for the slicer. I have always had a Techer for my main character. Nothing I have even comes close to those other photon arts. Not even half as good. I think this is very unbalanced is that respect. But I am still playing. I have not got around to those other Arts yet. I hope I can handle the Steer overpower.

The biggest thing the game needs is an extremely hard mission. PSU has always been lacking here. I dont know what it is. But there does not seem to be any challenges anymore. Dont nerf everything just crank up the settings and make it so there is a few missions no one person can solo. Not just because of megid. Megid is just anoying. lvl 10 Megid kills us more than my level 40 megid kills everything else which is just anoying in its own respect.

Blah blah blah have to stop now. Or I wont stop.

On last note. Nerfing stuff only makes more Guardians quit.

By tuff mission, I just mean a mission where monsters just wont die. Monsters with uber health. like boses with 1000,000 and regular creatures with 200,000 to 400,000.

THATS IT!

I enjoy the gameplay.

The community as a whole is meh, but I know some nice people and play with them.

Buuuuuut I'm getting tired of killing enemies so easily. I like that it's now easier for beginners to catch up (and even more so with the coming gameplay update) but I'd like some harder missions for capped players. Maybe at the endgame...

It's a bit of all for me, but it's mostly community.

I like to roleplay a lot with my friends and our own little community called the Vanguard! ^_^

Of course, sometimes it's fun to just play and level up, though the gameplay is a bit repetitive.

well simply put one of the best games available that incorporates a story with online mode that has a wide range of creativity. Also the combat style is quite different and fun. But being able to play with other players that are people in real life not npcs who can help each other out Is one of the best aspects of the game I believe. With that said having a version for the ps2/pc servers that is converted to the ps3 and has a voice chat system would probably get back that loss of players we have been seen on PSU. An expansion to complement this would be great too! ^_^ heck i would love to play PSU on my PS3 rather then the pc!!!!

For me, community is nice when there is one, but not foremost.

Story means nothing to me. I mean come on, I played the original PSO religiously. There were hints to a story, but I never found one.

On the PSO note, gameplay is vital to me. I really like the Just Attack / Just Counter system. It offers some more PSO style gameplay while still allowing the combat system designed for PSU to flourish. Very nice move.

Items are big to me. I like silly things like frying pans and such, and generally like new interesting weapons and items.

Maps are huge for me. I think one reason that I never got tired of PSO was that it just had really nice environments. The dark, lush Forest 2 (wasn't it raining) was particularly enjoyable. I don't know how bad it would be to try to get some environmental effects (rain, dust, etc) but that would be sweet. There are some nice maps right now, but there was just something about those four that got me back in the day.

Maps = Events > Gameplay = Items > Community > Plot

edit: Also, events are awesome

I play for all three reasons. I like the gameplay, events and updates. I play with some friends a lot, not so much when there's nobody on. Also I always look forward to story missions. I didn't care a whole lot for the main story (never finished it) but it was alright. Laia is someone I disliked at the beginning but have come to like more over the course of the story missions.

My husband plays (we each have two characters on our account) mostly by himself, so I would say he plays for gameplay since he never plays the story missions.

I really don't have a reason why I play other than I'm a diehard SEGA fan. All the games I buy are developed by SEGA. So the reason I play is because this is a RPG made by SEGA. That in itself is rare these days. Oh and port Shining Winds to the US! :x

its would be cool if they made a big improvement when they released AOI but it seems that i still use V1 items and weapons. If they only released real new weapons like an 11* machine gun all 3 planet version moat, neu, and parum versions. And how about S rank twin handguns from moatoob and neudaiz that Fortegunner could use. I mean ur letting Fightgunner use them in japan, and dont tell me to be a mastergunner cuz u would probly ruin the class by some sega trick?

I play PSU because I loved PSO. I think the main reason I Iiked it was because of the friends I played with. I also liked the battle system in PSO, and I really don't like the changes made to the battle system in PSU (linking spells to weapons, and removing the ability to customize controls, removing strong & special attacks, removing weapon specific special attacks, removing katana class of weapons[agito, yamigarasu, sange, yasha, etc]).

I really like the new worlds that players can explore. Actually walking around the cities of Clyez, Parum, Neudaiz and Moatoob and having miscellaneous shops and events make the lobbies really come to life. It makes the player feel like he is actually in a virtual world.

I do have one major gripe about how finding/joining missions is dealt, however. At times, it can be difficult trying to find parties to join. Having to travel from lobby to lobby and from planet to planet just to find another person to play with is a bit of a nuisance. This may be improved by having some sort of central mission counter that can access the parties of various different lobbies. For instance: Person A located in Moatoob City may join Person B's party, which is located at some other lobby of Moatoob, at a central mission counter located in Moatoob City. By centralizing mission counters (as in Phantasy Star Online mission counters), players can more easily join one another.

Friends and Rivals..mostly..it's never been about the items for me like it is other people. I am proud of some of the higher ranked weapons I have though. I really would like to see some sort of versus system and better minigames other then the Casino style minigames. I don't think 1 silver is enough in my opinion It's a bit too hard to save up the silver required for the items people want. I am a member of a guild and would like to see them implement a Guild system also. I play the game when I feel like it is fun to me. I really only play it when my friends are online...or when my rival wants to challenge me to a rae item hunt.(I'd rather PvP him then hunt for rares though..hunting isn't my thing..unless I'm hunting a player lol.) I really do like the job systems as well as the new Master jobs coming out. I would like to see Sega stay on top of the updates and the game and make it easier for even casual players to keep up with the not so casual players.

Definitely the mix of above. The story in addition of the comics published on SEGA PSU website allows me to understand what is all about though it could be better. Since AoTI, the collision issues that plagued the original is fixed so dodging is much easier. Having played the original Phantasy Star Online and its last incarnation Blue Burst, the gameplay from PSU is by far superiour . I have to agree with other posts to add extras gameplay such as race, shooting, airboard. Hopefully more areas will be accessible and interactive to give the feeling people are on a planet. One of my wishes are to merge both Japanese. America and Europe server to boost the population. What is also missing are the default text that can be translated by any language and voices as seen on the Japanese version.

My answer to that question is the fact that I have been playing Phantasy Star series since the beginning (as in the first game made for the Sega Master System). I personally liked the storyline on the games and how they decided on making the setting for and PSU in a whole new galaxy. So in other words, I'm just a really big fan of the game's franchise.

The community is a massive reason. Not that the community is any good or anything, because most of them are punks, but the fact that there IS a community - that's the draw. Expand upon this.

The gameplay, obviously. If it sucked, I wouldnt play it no matter how amazing the community was.

The community, I love it. I met alot of great people on this game that I wished I met sooner. It's always a great pleasure in partying with the ones you hang out with the most, and keep in contact with after you obtain their player card. Everyone is basically cool. I really didn't encounter any elitist in this game, so that makes it better.

I also get alot of enjoyment helping others out, either by lvling a job, or whatever, I wouldn't mind doing over 100 AMF runs just to lvl someone's job up. =P

I'm pretty sure the community is about 90% of the reason I'm gonna be playing this game for a good while.

I'm an OG fan of Phantasy Star. Ever since Sega Master System's first epic. In fact it was my friend who had the sega I had a nintendo at the time only reason I was convinced to trade systems for a week was to beat Phantasy Star on sega :> took me the whole week too constantly playing but finally did beat that.

Now nothing will ever come close to that story mode in that game especially with what we have seen lately. But that's ok the new Phantasy Star is not about some preset story you follow rather than the adventures you and your friends pretty much create as well as the online community with the special events ie. seasonal holidays, 1 UP Cups. etc.

As a player of Phantasy Star Online the biggest problem was there was not enough of a variety. 4 levels same monsters same bosses. The whole addictiveness factor was still there though. Build up your character become the strongest have the best toys to show off to all your friends.

Now all that has been addressed we have multiple planets that still take me back to the 2 planets an a moon system I first encountered in the first Phantasy Star. We now have way more than 4 levels although it seems some of us have our favorite 4 or 5 we do a lot to level or to find components of a weapon or item.

I've always been a bit antisocial so the whole community factor isn't #1 for me but is like icing on the cake. As long as this universe keeps growing and expanding I'll continue to be a happy camper. The whole room customization is great. I am finally glad I am able to move my room to parum and moatoob hopefully will eventually end up moving to Neudaiz soon as most of my decorating and clothing follows that motif to begin with.

I loved seeing the evolution of a pretty flashy mag just floating around you for no good reason to becoming almost the centerpiece of your whole inventory and #1 ally in solo missions. not to mention the caretaker of your whole self home based business :>

Anyway to sum up just how estatic I have been over this game. You took a pretty basic online game that was addictive as hell and really elaborated on it making even more addictive. If I didn't already not have a social life I definitely would not now :>
Except for the one I got online :>
This PSU has consumed my world and I'm convinced even if I was on a colony on mars or the moon or on a space station I'd much rather be on PSU.

I am thoroughly impressed with your combat system and the multiple ways you can lvl. however I have been concerned as to what I'm going to do once I reach my maxes or simply get bored trying to get there. having bad azz weapons and skills are only fun to show off for so long. we need something that we can put them to use for. GBR was a definite step in the right direction, as well as group missions that require at least 2 ppl. but there needs to be more of them created regularly, possibly event's that pit us against one another or that will guarantee a rare weapon or item, just make sure its incredibly hard to figure out and mobs that are moderately hard to defeat and for christ sake create head to head, possibly with a defense boost during the battle to have it last longer and require more skill than luck

A bit of everything really.

The story isn't anything special but it provides a pleasant distraction at times (though offline in this game is poor).

I play mainly because I enjoy doing runs with friends that I have made on this game. I'm on 360 so we do a lot of voice chatting and to me this game is more like a chat room where you can also chase down beasties and hunt for rares (as well as misbehaving in the game which never loses it's appeal).

The gameplay itself also lends itself very well to this casual style of play. I also enjoy the forum community aspect of this as well since I enjoy reading the various opinions and laughing at some of the morons that seem to live on these forums (do they actually have time to play the game?).

I always come back to PSU for multiple reasons. I play with a great little group of friends. We've been playing together since the beginning (most of us anyways, lol) and we just have a lot of fun, whether its to clobber some baddies or to hunt for rare items. I like playing the story chapters despite how hilariously cheesy they can be too. Guess that's part of what makes them fun for me. Also, I think the events like Firebreak and 1UP cup are great, so I'm always looking foward to future events. Speaking of... can't wait for Max Attack G. :D

I have played since the first PSO on Dreamcast, it has always been the character models, battle system and community that keeps my interest. The more that is going on online the more I feel inclined to log in.

I think the low numbers on PC/PS2 are too low, but kudos for keeping the servers hack free. Nothing kills the replay like easy shortcuts.

personallly, this is my most played game by faaaaaar.

but psu continues to suffer from a overall bad original design. do one level, repeat. there is no progression for anything. so many things about this game have gotten better, but without a massive amount of things to do and items to collect, its hits the wwall pretty fast. thats said, it still doesnt stop many of us from playing- its psu man!!

but most of can sense so many lost opportunities, such as:

-amosphere of the overall game, well, sucks. standouts include some neudaiz and parum levels, but ill be damned moatabb is flying garbage

-lack of any connecting story elements in any missions. this kills in soo many ways. in pso, there were area s ou had to treak through, like you were goign through a story. here, its mission, lobby. zzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

-severe lack of content- the horrible orginal weapons and cloned versions thereof set the stage for the dearth of really good stuff now.

-lack of inclusion for things that would make the game more flexible, such as - logging out to change characters, inablity to interchange your pm's. the abilty to swap PA's shows that they are at least thinking in this direction.

-hard to find s-rank weapons with weaksauce stats- wow, that srank is not as good as the 9*....rinse and repeat. what boob thought of this?

-oneof the biggest pieces of horrible game design, there is no internal game map whatsoever. so when an update happens, on friday there is no indication AT ALL about new missions/content. no special missions for certain types, like newman challenges, or robo armies of something like that. its really not that hard to create cool stuff!

WHERE THE HELL IS ENDLESS NIGHTMARE!!!!!!! argh, i cant type any more!

Panda, it doesn't sound like you even know what an rpg really is. I can name a handful of rpgs that are like PSU or PSO. PSU/PSO, imho, is an "Action/RPG" above all else. I've beaten over 50 (console) rpgs and I played FFXI for a year and that game has a bigger rpg feel than any other online game on the planet. It was very slow moving, cookie cutter, and not very individually customizable though. Another thing, "There is both on and offline... a true mmoRPG" wtf? Definition: massively multiplayer ONLINE role playing game. A true mmorpg does not have a story mode, sorry.

Anyway, I am very impressed about the new "opinion" threads for ST, it shows that they might actually be trying to take into the account the opinions of both sides of the world rather than just one. I will be posting a copy of this reply in both of the threads with my opinions.

PROS

Leveling and Story

I love level grinding, doing a run over and over gaining levels. I also love the real-time (action game) fighting aspect of PSO and PSU. I absolutely love the background story, the post-modern/sci-fi theme has always been a huge draw to me in a lot of movies and games (if you haven't already tried, I recommend checking out the Star Ocean series).

Rare Hunting

The absolute BEST aspect of the game is the rare hunting. I have a treasure hunter mentality in all games I play. Most people will play until they beat a game and not worry about extras, I'm kind of a completion-ist. I will do 200 of the same run in one night just to find that one super rare weapon. Don't get me mistaken. I CAN'T STAND those freakin people that get an uber rare and have to show it off to everyone and their mothers. I don't gloat. The satisfaction of putting the work in to get that rare makes me appreciate games tenfold. I will even hunt for a super rare that I never ever intend to use.

Character Customization

Although slightly weak in the type of player a character may be (fo, ra, hu) PSU COMPLETELY makes up for it in appearance customization. Cannot reiterate enough, BEING ABLE TO BE RECOGNIZED IN A CROWD OF PEOPLE IS SOOOOOO MUCH FREAKIN COOLER THAN EVERYONE LOOKING EXACTLY THE SAME. ;P

CONS

Section ID's

PSO had THE BEST system for rare hunting, ie: super low probabilities, section id specific weapons. PSU is great at it too. Section ID's though should have been implemented. It would promote a community that relies on each other to get the rares they need. Letting everyone be able to get every single weapon just by spamming a certain mission not only assures that EVERY SINGLE PLAYER has that one rare, it also ENCOURAGES solo running in a passworded room. Guess it's too late to implement section id's now...

Too Easy to Reach Max Level

The other day I came into a party whose leader had a name I will not give out but let's just say it was one of the 50 mil Naruto wannabe names. I thought "fine, whatever, no matter what you do, in any mmo you will have several of these people. Now, not only was he not a very good player (ie: dying at parts not to terribly dangerous, spamming buffs when not really needed, using odd weapon combinations for his class) but he also had absolutely NO KNOWLEDGE OF THE GAME. Started talking about MAG. Didn't know what that was. Starting talking about the Cross Hurricane I was leveling. Never heard of that. Now the real funny one was after the mission was over and we all received a PA Frag. He says I quote "What's a PA?" Guess what level he was. Level 112.

This game should not be that easy to reach the higher levels. Missions should be harder. It should feel like a real accomplishment to be able to S rank one of the tougher missions in the game. I also believe we receive too much experience and reward from our current missions. If you are a high level player, I expect that you are one of the (god-forbid the word) "elite" of the game. Everyone is high level. That makes for a game that is too easy. A high level player doesn't feel any accomplishment because he never really had to work for it. Please make missions where you HAVE to have a full party to survive even IF you are at the level cap.

Communication with Sega

The HUGE thing that everyone complains about (and I do partially agree) is being in communication with Sega. This last weekend really really really annoyed a lot of us. Eighty percent of the flames Sega received COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED if they would have just promptly told us what was going on BEFORE they had it fixed. I'm not saying that posting an announcement is THE first step you should make, but you very well could have done it shortly after calling the air conditioner guy. Having two whole days of not knowing wth was going on, having the servers then come up and not getting an explanation until another couple days after server returned is very very bad. Leaving us questioning opens you up to super flaming. A very good many gamers are needy. They NEED to know what is going on at all times. It shows you care about us, and that you want to resolve the matter as quickly as we do. People love feeling that safety net. They very much dislike feeling like it's them against you.

These threads are a huge step in the right direction imo and like I said, shows Sega is at least interested in what we truthfully think. I give them a huge congratz on the effort.

Board System

Haha, more like personal preference than a bad aspect of the game. Some people love the synthing aspect of the game. I don't particularly care for it. Do a weeks worth of 300+ runs for a recipe with 1 use that fails on you makes you pretty much not want to ever see that single mission again. Also, in a consistency aspect of the game, I can believe a De Ragan dropping a sword that has the back story of "sword of a warrior fought bravely against a dragon only to lose his own life" but something like "the recipe of a sword of a warrior who lost his life to a dragon" or "dragon ambushed a band of blacksmiths and ate this recipe"??? Come on, very very lame indeed. As I said, just personal opinion.

Ok, that's all for now. If I can think of anything else I'll post. Happy gaming!

I play for various reasons. I like this game very much but I won't let friends be the only reason I play.

Combat is awesome. Way better than FFXI and some other mmorpgs. I prefer fighting mobs psu style anyday other than just standing and waiting for my weapon to swing on others...heck this beats turn based battles almost anyday! xD (Some turn based games are just too classic to say they are beaten)

Also when it comes to weapons, I like the mixture of how each class can use certain ones...and I hope one day there will be more weapon types. I hope there will be a thread that'll ask what dream weapon would you like to see on here....I have the perfect one in mind...one that every class could use...but I will not say it yet. If my opinion of this is truly wanted then I look forward to getting private mail from Sega personally ^^v
I have not come up with a name for the weapon yet...wish I could but atm it is not easy to name...I have thought of pa actions for it though other than that I am still thinking of a name.

In this game I play acrotecher alot more than any other class. To top things off I am a beast...and I have never had so much fun as I do when I am Acrotecher. I saw the update japanese players are getting and I hope that maybe AT can get a skill boost to 30...support going to 50 is awesome..so maybe this skill boost may not be needed but...eh just thought I'd throw this out there.

Let's see...I know this has been mentioned earlier in this thread and some here are right...we should have been notified somehow but I an understand the difficulty of it cause of the holidays...maybe letting jaggos (normal ones) be able to drop love inferno for a week would help fix this? I tried hunting for it myself and ended up getting at least a van brella but no love inferno...darn thing never dropped even after servers got back up! xD

Ok what else can I say...oh! I look forward to seeing the combat of this game get better than it is now. Being able to counter right away after blocking is awesome. I know it's been around since the expansion but I wanted to say how cool it was now. I hope to see other things similar to this added...or maybe see class speeds all improved. (Sorry I just love Acrotecher speed...especially cast speed combined with Har/quick...I really hope it'll remain the fastest caster even after master classes come out)

Master classes are an interesting topic...Fighmaster of the 3 seems to be the one most will go after. Masterforce...as a techer I can only hope that lvl 50 attack techs do major dmg...cause this class will be the worst to rely on for resta/reverser/giresta. Though thankfully I am not addicted to attack technics so I may avoid this class altogether after giving it a shot a couple time to see it's "power" The gunmaster class...it'll be interesting...though I hope it does get one melee weapon S rank wise to use.

Armor...all I have to say about this is I hope we get more armor that has it's own special image to see when we block like the Serafi-senba and Loveheart line.

Items...I don't have much to say about them but when it comes to holding items...I hope to be able to see a way to be able to hold more than 60. More storage is great! Don't get me wrong I put that to use very well...but as a Acrotecher...I have at least 30-32 items (weapons/armor/healing items etc) on me at minimum..and I tend to max out kinda quickly if junk stiff is picked up or some healing items like monomate, moon atomizer turn up in my inventory by randomness...

I will say nothing much about races...I like each one yet overall Beast is what I will be most hands down anyday. I might play newman and human more if they got a special ability like casts and beasts have (suv/nanoblast) but eh...I guess being able to use certain weapons that casts and beasts will not ever be able to use is a plus...if newman and humans get like a mini ability say...like newmans get a ability to make one of their weapons restore it's pp to full for one and human be able to restore their hp when bar is full one time..that'd be something. It wouldn't take anything away from the SUV/Nanoblasting power seen by casts and beasts...only a idea. XD (the human hp restore ability would be a major help to keep npc humans like Bruce...alive instead of seeing him get killed so easily sometimes in his own dungeon)

Finally to finish things off...not like this final thing about what I am going to say will matter much but good luck to everyone on their hunts/runs. Also say hi to me if ya see me...I'm hard to find just like some of the rares we want. xD

the most important thing, is friends, period (my opinion). Sure rare hunting and synthing special items are cool and fun, but who are you gonna brag about it to once you finally get that rucar everyone charges so much for? Maybe some randomer, but they will either not care, flame you or be in awe for like 3 seconds and get jealous and run away.

Friends are ppl you can party with, show off weapons, get information from and generally help you out in gameplay if you need assistance. Obviously, the main draw to this game isn't the story, and hunting solo may be fine for some, but usually if none of my friends are on, or are afk, i just log off and do something else. I know when i got the game(s) on day one, i was eager to play online with my friends, of course to bash monsters over the head with photon objects, but mainly to do something with my friends.

So all-in-all, i play psu because its something to do online with friends, granted there are others things to do online with friends as well, aside from playing psu.

My favorite part of the game is definitely earning rare items, but I strongly dislike that everything I work so hard for (actually I just buy) becomes common in about 3 weeks from release.

I don't really like the community aspect so much, because of false rumors that are spread, and also because most of the lobby chat is just spam, reckless bantering, or new people begging for money.

i love the battle system but i wished protran would be easier to lvl Ah man, I leveled Protranser on my beast back when 15 mission points was a big reward. Stick with it, once you reach the higher protranser levels, you have massive amounts of power and weapon choices. It's an amazing class. EX traps for the win.

Just a lil while ago, someoen asked me why I am a beast protranser and proceeded to tell me that fortefighters are the only true PSU class. 2 minutes later, he died from the zonde turrets at the egg thieves. And I enjoyed a good laugh.

I like PSU because of its sci-fi setting. It isn't set on some primitive planet (I'm looking at you, FF11, i am never spending 15 minutes to ride a boat again!). Gameplay is really fun. It was refreshing to actually hit something and not watch your character do it instead. The community rocks, too. I've met alot of nice people playing PSU, and nothing beats doing a run with good friends! :D

I stick around because of meeting new people, leveling up my character and getting new weapons/items. The game play is great too, I can't wait until the new master classes come out. The only issues I have with the game are the really long missions with the good mp or exp, and not being able to delete characters without covering them up with another character.

Eh? Forgot to make my mark here so........

Reasons why I play PSU
-Community
Nubs, nubs, and nubs! I mean, life would be pretty crappy without them around. Who would give me that laugh of the day while I'm playing? The ones that like to chatterbox? The ones that argue over pointless stuff on the boards? The hardcore nubs? The nubs who like to say no life? The ones that like to bash and complain to Sega about any of their updates? I mean ****, life would be pretty crappy in this game w/o it and I don't think I would of played for as long as I have. If you compare it to other mmos where people are silent in game, the official boards are pretty quiet, and there is no drama, flamezorz, or spam going on, why am I playing it? I wanna have fun with nubs and corrupt some along the way! Playing the game seriously is no fun at all!

-Combat
Eh, maybe its b/c I'm old skool or I have no brain cells left, but real time combat has always been my thang over the typical mmo setup. Omg, let me watch my toon for about 24 hrs wack this! Omg, let me press this key to do this! Omg, let me set it up where I can let the game work for me and go work, party, and sleep without having me being there! So yes, I can handle the very repetitive combat system in this game unlike the rest and not get bored of it. And best of all, I can't afk it! I can only afk my class lvl (excluding pas) in which nub will kick me after the first two runs most likely!

-Rares?
Eh, isn't that why anyone plays? No one plays for those same ol fugly looking lowbie weapons/armor/units. Personally, that Kan nub (yu) is the sexiest weapon in the game for me. Too much sexy for females to handle!!

-Customization
Eh, you guys still need to do a better job on it, but customization of your character is pretty good when compared to other games. Some gripes....

I still don't know why you can't implement the height stuff in the makeover shop but whatever.

Still don't know why only certain headgear can be placed on x hairstyle. Wow, I didn't think one pair of shades wouldn't work for that hair model when you have glasses as a option for that one for example :P.

My only other gripe is the hottest clothing comes out near "x" expansion (if were getting one again). Should start with hottest looking clothing to fugly imo. Like I wanted that Jester outfit for males (thats what it was). Bring out that **** GUARDIANS Formal set for females and I'll be happy with that forever (maybe).

I'd say I prefer this over rarez and anything else. I'm pretty much obsessed with customization in games. Have a few friends that can attest to that.

-Network
PSU is the only game that will run perfectly fine with my f'ed up college campus connection is f'ed up. Any other game I won't be able to stay in game until the T1 is not at its peak hours. So really, PSU is the only game I can play when the T1 doesn't suck when I'm on campus.

Thats it. I do share my hate for the game, but since this is a praise type topic, I left it in the other topic :P.

I like the number of different things you can level up in PSU:

Your level
Your type
Your PM synthesis level
Your PM B.St
Your Photon Arts
Your weapons (by grinding or trying for better elemental percentages)
Your armor (by trying for better elemental percentages)

I also wouldn't mind being able to grind armor.

I wouldn't mind seeing a 'speed' stat to level too that affects speed of skills, bullets and techs as well as movement speed, strikes me as kind of strange that as I'm stronger than I used to be I should be a little faster with it. Perhaps when the final level cap is in place (200?) monsters could give us something else instead along the lines of merit points in Final Fantasy XI, or even faction along the lines of World of Warcraft.

I dislike hitting level caps, I quit back when the level 70 cap was in force because getting 0xp from killing stuff took a lot of fun out of the gameplay, then came back 8 months later to find lots of Photon Arts to be getting on with as well as being able to grind up to 130, so it's not so bad now as I don't think I'll cap them all before caps are raised again for a long time.

I also dislike giltchers, keep banning them and I'll probably keep playing, it's the main reason I left FFXI.

I would like to see more solo Free Missions, along the lines of Storyline Missions but with Level/Type/Weapon requirements so we can test ourselves out.

The basic gameplay is fun. The fact the game has online co-op only makes it sweeter. I'm not really much of a competitive gamer, PvP doesn't really appeal to me.

It doesn't have to be a huge time commitment compared to other online games. I've got friends who pop on to do a mission or 2 and just grab their coin as well as hardcore friends who run almost all day every day.

With the adjusted drop rates, we can all find things for each other, upping our sense of community. Being with friends make the game for sure.

I'd be nice if we had more choices of missions to run together for items and such.

The story missions guarantees me to return once a month to play them. I play for everything else also. I primarily play to work together with people and have fun. Don't be silly; when Kibou, Cephyr, and Nyaty beat the first boss - if you mean the SEED form leader in Linear Line C - we were about level 3. If you mean De Ragan we, beat him at about level 11. And none of us were more than a week into playing online >.> Yay tactics.

I play Phantasy Star Universe for those random lol moments like when people get married in the Guardians Colony or Foran Waterfall and then all the sudden the whole community is there in 5 mins and the bride and groom are getting humped or when you come across really funny characters that are fat and short and named lil Miss Thunder Thighs. In short, I play for fun.

There are two things that keep me coming back. The game's atmoshpere and my online friends. And even though it is fun to hang with these friends and look at the sights of PSU, something is missing: tha BANG that brought me into PSU.

When I first started playing, there had to be a lot of cooperation between team members in order to accomplish a mission's goal. Now, practically anything can be solo'd. There is no difficulty, or sense of risking my life as a GUARDIAN or even a need for teamwork. All the new GUARDIAN missions do is force teamwork on it's players for otherwise a soloable task. What made the game originally exciting was the lack of knowledge on landscapes, terrain, monsters, special abilities, etc. Sadly, it is all predictable to the extreme. Even on new missions.

I need new surprises in battle. I need something to pull the rug out from under me. Since this is an action based game, spontaneity and wits should be key to a victory.

Even though PSU has some great atmospheres, they aren't alive. The majority of the missions are SEED extermination missions. I thought GUARDIANs did more like rescue people. Maybe evacuations from SEED attacks? A hostage situation with rogues? It would be interesting to find that each mission was a little more unique than clear this area of all mutated life.

To sum it all up, there needs to be difficulty in this game like the pre-expansion era. Not necessarily harder, but to actually have difficulty itself. At the moment, the Fortefighter who pushes the X button first wins. Buttons/switches in missions alone won't make teamplay happen. Free missions need puzzles or events where what happens in one area with a split up party effects the other area the other half of the party is in. Or, a colossal SEED that requires specific actions against a certain body part to neutralize it for a time being. Otherwise, he can wipe the floor with the players.

PSU has such potential, now it is time to go there. The ground work is set. I would like to see this game build upwards instead of outwards.

I played for a while because it was, initially, a way to keep in contact with good friends over long distances and have something to do while we chatted.

I continue to play because I'm preparing. Getting PA's and Characters leveled for when (if?) the game gets better. I'm hoping for PvP, stronger missions aimed at parties of six with better drops and monster spawns, as well as slightly weaker missions aimed at soloing (after all, your friends aren't always on and sometimes you just don't want company). I'm also hoping for some of the phenomenal items from the offline that we'd all love to have like; better Units, S.U.V's, Ff armor, Gt guns, Mags, and even casual stuff like a couple more wicked looking auras.

I'd also like to see ST get a better handle on their coding. It seems that glitches, roll-backs, and delays are commonplace these days. I'd love to see our events get back on schedule, with no problems. Even if it were just a couple of events before another eff-up. We can't all be perfect all of the time, but can we at least aim for 65%?

20+ years of Phantasy Star. It just becomes a part of your gaming psyche.

This will probably get lost in the many pages. But I personally play off and on. I have a steady subscription so what does Sega care?

Anyways, I personally get bothered and constantly debate canceling (and have in the past) do to a couple things I find bothersome.

First, PSO was epic because it was world wide and you could always find someone to play with. PSU is divide up by X360 or PC/PS2 and those two servers are North American and Japanese. Why in the world are these servers split up? I mean come on, that was the biggest selling point of PSO and it was stripped for PSU, no wonder the servers are so dry.

Atleast a character transfer between servers would be nice, having gone from the PC/PS2 version (which is epically dead) to the Xbox (not so much) and having to restart my character after he had all the event items etc. That's just cruel.

Second, as many Universes as there are I think it's about time you guys collapse a bunch of them, 20 servers when there aren't even enough to fill three of them? Collapse it to about five to seven universes so everyone isn't always so spread out.

Something else, it's probably netcode and probably can't be done. But is there some possibility that it can be programmed in so that when you first login you join the busiest possible server instead of an empty nothing server. It's something small like this that drives me nuts.

There are so many more things but I do enjoy the game and I don't want to rant and make myself to start hating such a nice game.

I myself am a dedicated rare hunter. So voted items and combat but the game becomes infuriating when I can spam SW S2 for a week straight with lvl 3 luck, EVERYDAY for 3-4 hours a day and not a SINGLE Psycho wand drops! I dont feel rewarded for my effort and time. (This just an example, I simply choose not to go on) But yea, many a PSU player would agree. I expect 11 and 12* weapons to be tough to get because they ARE RARE! But I also expect to hunt it and FIND it eventually! Sheesh! And thats just a monster drop, dont get me started on Boss Drops.....!!!!!

I'd have to say the gameplay, story, then the friends.

Despite how much the friends I've made in this game mean to me, I have to say that the first thing that attracted me to this game had nothing to do with the said people and just purely because of the gameplay. I thoroughly enjoyed the plot as well and continue to like it, so it didn't just stop at the game mechanics. Along the way, I met a lot of great people, so even if they are to leave, I'll still be around so they can have someone to return to. I do have plenty of qualms with the game, a few being big and a lot being small and insignificant, so the game itself is what keeps me motivated.

Unfortunately, the gap between the importance of my friends and the actual game is larger than I'd like it to be. I guess the content lately hasn't been too exciting, and the disappointing system setbacks don't help either.

I would like to see this game build upwards instead of outwards.

there is not one thing I could argue with in this post.

ff11 is full of story mode mission
Though it should be noted that you need to play for 5xx hours before you can play more than 3 of said missions.

Back to the topic:

What motivates you to play PSU?
Ticklish girls, obv.

actually u can start off with any of the more basic job level stories right away with a little guidance which you can get for yourself by looking online. not to mention the main story of the game doesn't take that much effort. have you actually played the game? no disrespect but I completely disagree.
Sorry, what? You need to be like level 20+ just to beat the first boss in a party, unless you can con a few other people to have a stab at it with one lowbie hiding in a corner.

well i don't know what your talking about unless you're talking about the fact that you need to be on certain lvls before you can start advance job class missions. with each advance job class having it's own unique history and story. I still play the game and you have me confused. although I do know what you talking about on the newb making exp off of higher lvls (power lvling) which i always take advantage of. but back to my first point, even if you don't start the story missions right away there are events all the time on FF11. This game(PSU) should look into copying a few ideas from ff11. although I love the battle system here as a whole. actually the only reason I play this game. and the hope that it's going to get better. it has a lot of potential.

One reason why I still play ( rarely ) is because of friends and treasure hunting.

I got hooked on pso back on the dreamcast because I enjoyed finding and hunting for the items.
It is the reason why I still play psu. I enjoy looking for and hunting for goodies. I enjoy the whole selling rares in shops too. It gives me a reason to go look for stuff. That way I can sell what I don't need and keep the stuff I enjoy.

Things that I enjoy about PSU:

- Character and room customization, though it could be a lot better

- Live action battle system

- Getting cool weapons and items

- Playing with friends and other people who enjoy online gaming

- Events such as Firebreak and 1-Up Platinum Cup, and holiday/seasonal events

I like playing online because of...

1] Friends play
2] Uber rare hunting
3] Being able to "haggle" over prices/make trades
4] Holiday events
5] Special events
6] Finding new players and helping them with $$ and weps
7] Grind weps and break them and still have the wep
8] ROULETTE ... need I say more :)

I could list more, but I won't waste no more space...

Synthetising a weapon, lineshield and items, making own shop is one of them. NPC quests are slowly getting in, Sonic Team should add more along the story line.

I haven't played in a while. Do jobs have their own storyline missions now?

Back when I played, you had one storyline for your nationality (which required you to be like level 20 for rank 2, rofl) and a storyline per expansion (RotZ pretty much requiring you to be 60 to start, CoP only needing 30 but raising like 10 levels every mission, ToaU pretty much needing 75 throughout).

Not lowbie friendly!

Seeing as I'm still playing FFXI I'll step in. In essence there was sort of a story line quest that went with unlocking the advanced jobs. That sort of explained what the job and only really was expanded upon when you were doing the three artifact armor quests besides that there weren't very much of a storyline class wise.

RotZ (Rise of the Zilart) had its 17 missions or so with a bunch of those just being cutscenes. I believe it was intentionally designed be be beaten with a decent party around level 50 or so (I believe that was the original cap when Zilart was first released). Necessary to complete up to ZM 14 I believe for access to Sky.

The 3 starting nation quests were kind of the same way as you could start out doing some early on but the farther you progressed you would require higher levels/more people. Also once you got to Rank 6 you really did not need to do them anymore as Rank 6 allowed for Dynamis access.

CoP (Chains of Promathia) was capped throughout which made it semi accessible to newer players but it was actually a way more difficult expansion; which has since been toned down. Also with the addition of Blue Mage most of the CoP content is a cake walk. Completion allowed access to Sea, Limbus, and some other Dynamis areas.

ToAU (Treasure of Aht Urghan) was very heavily based upon cutscenes again, and alot of it could be done as a lower level if you had some high level assistance. There are not that many fights in ToAU but the last few fights were not really anything you could carry a low level through. Completing this just got you a reward (choice of lvl 50 and there doesn't seem to be any other area unlocked at this time.)

WotG (Wings of the Goddess) has alot of cutscenes again, and will probably play out like ToAU where you'll need to be progressively higher level to complete it.

Both ToAU and WotG have been working on sort of a PSU like content release system where we are getting a few mission at a time, unlike the other expansions which were all ready to go from the time you installed the expansion.

I think what you guys need to add in is a higher end player to play communication system. Say for example, partner cards. That's cool, I understand it, but there could be so much more work done on it. Say for example, a guild or clan system that didn't act as anything more than just a conference area, and a guild chat sort of thing, so you could talk with all your teammates regardless of where you are. I also wouldn't mind them changing the vision phone a bit, maybe you could look up a person on your card list and get a view of their face or something. It IS a vision phone, right?

Definately my friends, I would say gameplay and items too, but now the missions are boring, any item is pretty much easy to obtain, and the economy is plain crap.

Really if it wasnt for the past events with increased drop rates, then this game would have been fun. 1up was a lot of fun, but it should have ended with that.

Suggestions: If any new events in the future there shouldn't be increased drop rates, maybe something like a temporary very rare weapon, like Sega does with seasonal rare monsters.

I play to help others get used to the game. I like to help new people to the game get better items, help them level, and give them a good experience so that they keep coming back for more of this amazing game. The one thing I work the hardest to do is make sure newcomers to the game do not get scammed whatsoever and try my hardest to help everybody I come across.

Here's one I don't think I've seen mentioned:

Naming Freedom - Oh, not that it's good to have stupid names with cusswords in them or anything like that of course -.- But rather, PSU, like PSO, to my knowledge assigns characters ID numbers, and refers to that ID number for everything handled by the system rather than using a character's name - which means two players can have the same character name. For some reason, I really like that being possible.

Why don't more online RPG's do that? o.O You'd think when trying to represent a world as realistically as possible, that'd be a nice addition.

Necessary to complete RotZ up to ZM 14 I believe for access to Sky.
Also once you got to Rank 6 [of the nation stories] you really did not need to do them anymore as Rank 6 allowed for Dynamis access.
Completion [of CoP] allowed access to Sea, Limbus, and some other Dynamis areas.
I think the focus of the point was meant to be about the story itself, not the rewards. I know after the first 2000+ hours most surviving players will want to do x storyline only for access to y area and then "do not need to do them anymore", but that wasn't the point :|

The 3 starting nation quests were kind of the same way as you could start out doing some early on but the farther you progressed you would require higher levels/more people.
e.g. the first boss requiring level 22~25, which is like 300 hours of gameplay. Sickeningly unfriendly to new players, which was the point.

Both ToAU and WotG have been working on sort of a PSU like content release system where we are getting a few mission at a time, unlike the other expansions which were all ready to go from the time you installed the expansion.
I'm sure CoP had staged updates as well. I wouldn't know about before then because the EU release of FFXI was like 2 years after everywhere else and base/RotZ were already done by then.

Yeah I was mainly just saying how the stories worked in general. I probably could have left it at the "storylines" for each individual class were but I pretty much threw in everything else for a sense of completeness. You're definetely right about it not being really new player accessible, however the 300 hours to level 22-25 is a bit of an exaggeration. Compared to when you played they've added a few items that allow you to gain more xp to help with levelling up more, and I don't know if you were playing when they added the update that made levelling 51-75 easier which made all the high levels baww, sort of like people that complain that PSU is too easy.

I think you might be right about CoP and RoZ being a bit staggered as well; though I remember being able to do most of the missions right away when I'm looking at archived updates there were only a few updates that mention new missions have been added involving CoP and I know a few refer to Limbus and some of the RoZ ones just pertain to things like Divine Might. ToAU was much worse in this sense, it seemed like they hadn't completed it at the time as you'd get missions 1-15 then 16 and 17 then 18-21 or something similar.

I still play because I like the character designs and I like the idea of the game.

I like it being more of an action based MMO.

I like the weapon design. Mostly.

I think, overall, combat is quite satisfying.

Well sure I play because of friends and stuff like that, but I also play for the ingenious things such as Enemy AI, namely in their formations. I just love watching Mob "Leaders" command thier lower ranks to form up around them for attacks, Like the king Vahras resta formatin and the ollakas Merry-go-round formation. It reminds me a lot of Phantasy star online episode 3, the game that started me off in this series a few years back. Sure, Ive played ep 1/2 and blue burst now, but ep3 stands out as one of the most addictive games I've ever picked up, period. I like this game. But there are a few things that I think would make it even better.

PvP: One on One fighting, make it so that only people in the same lvl braket can fight each other. Example lvl 50 's can only fight people in the 50's etc... Make it worth trying, give people rewards like for example make it so that each player puts money down lets say 100k and the winner of the match gets it. Also make some kind of Arena where players can bet money on and possibly watch other people's pvp matches. I know there are alot of doubts about this actually working but i think its atleast worth considering besides practically almost every other online rpg has this option.

Left trigger: There aren't many uses for this button so far except when you use the B button combination and when you wanna (scream) text. I was thinking maybe make it a photon switch button for guns. Instead of having to go to the menu screen to switch photons just a quick click on the trigger and it lets you switch from ice to fire to dark to light etc... or maybe even make it so if you hold the left trigger it pops up a little menu where you can switch photons real quick using the dpad without the hassle of pressing start, then finding the weapon, then switching the photon and then backing out. I think it would save alot of time.

Well anyways this is just a few things that I think would make this game a little better.

I find it refreshing to have a storyline to follow, I get bored quite quickly with most MMORPGs that just involve running around and killing a lot of poor, defenseless monsters to try and get yourself a few levels up and the occasional rare item.

I mainly like the fact that even online, one can play the story line. I also enjoy having people to meet and talk to, instead of running around with the deathly silent NPCs who only talk during the cutscenes or when telling you what to do.

A bit more variety would make this game even more fun to play.

the only thing I find good in the game is the fact I meat so meny friends and kool people online to play with!

I mean yea the 1 player story missions online are kind of kool but you get so lonely playing them I would have liked to see the option to play them with a party of 2 instead (this way there's no loneliness)

and as I state there's way not a good amount of weapons XP (reason being I hate seeing everyone have the same pallet as me no matter were I go XP)

Left trigger: There aren't many uses for this button
The trouble there is that the game was designed for the PS2 controller (which also happens to be a common PC controller design), and the triggers there are all used.

That said, a Skies of Arcadia-style "element rotate" option for guns has been suggested more than once in the past. It's an intriguing parallel if nothing else considering the way SoA weapons glow and that it uses six of PSU's seven element colours.

I've been a player/ fan of the PSO series (if it can be called that) since 2004 when it was released on GC. me and some friends picked it up that winter and found in it, a good replacement for our diablo addiction.
the release of PSU was a breath of fresh air to the series for me at least (the reviews were less than kind on amazon.com) as it introduced what i believe to be the selling point for the game these days: the photon arts. i found these to break the monotony of the grind, and give the player something new to look forward to in leveling a character.
i play online in binges, lasting about 3-4 months before i get burnout, so the 6-month one-time payment is a nice option.
another great aspect is the late-night community. they're very talkative, and rarely overly rude or aggravating. mixing that with the plethora of dramatic emotes is quite entertaining, sometimes to a worrisome level.
i would really like to see more clothing, interactive room decor and, (if it isnt too game-breaking) more different-looking weapons.
i've heard rumors of a PvP addition, which would really spice things up, but in this game, i can live without it.
also, thank you for keeping the servers healthy!

Love Enjoy Appreciate:
1. friends.
2. character creation is outstanding. (thank God i can relive the og phantasy star series characters by making them myself!)
3. cut-ins let you role-play and show the depth of your character and can be hilarious!
4. race/job system...so many ways to KILL! you can play each class 10 different ways.
5. AOTI improvements/fixes/enhancements (i probably would have quit if it wasn't for each and every one of these. ty, sega)
6. storyline is mediocre, but i love the way it ties into online play. it helps draw you into the world more.
7. i love that there's 3 different ways to level up (char./job/PAs).
8. i don't mind spamming WB. i just love leveling up and mindlessly hacking a slashing.
9. lots of gorgeous weapons.
10.events!

Hate Despise Loathe:
1. NO TIE-INS TO THE OG SERIES!!! WTH!?
2. logging in is ABSURD when trying to share items and PAs between 4 characters!
3. Load Successful/Complete. what do i care?! PROCEED!
4. and finally slowdown of course! i hate when my weapon unloads and i have to run away from sageetas! item scrolling is ridiculous, too, when there's any type of stress on the ps2. my poor ps2 is gonna die of a heart attack before it reaches 3!

Hell...there's more than one reason that I still play PSU. There's the friends, of course. After the English BB servers got shut down, I migrated here with a few old pals of mine. Of course...I started my Guardians License back in November after AOTI came out. (Previously I'd played PSU for PS2, never went online) I also play the game cause the combat system is something I can understand. I don't know why, but some people I knew back then refused to play PSU because the system was different and complicated. I like the fact that there's more challenge now than there was back in PSO. Finally, I guess I play cause PSU is barely getting any new people. You gotta admit...the game isn't very well known, and there's not much advertising, if any, done for the game. I just don't want to see it die off. So I guess you could say I wanna play the game cause I'm a loyal sucker. :)

The story line...nah. They tried and failed with that one, if you ask me. Unfortunately, they tied the gameplay way too close to the storyline. It's because of this that PSU is restricted so much. That's just what I think, though.

I think it all revolves around gameplay but the community has kept me in the game too.

Just keep the gameplay evolving at a steady rate(remember the lvl 80 cap yeh I quit then until AoI came out). The community brought me back plus the new content. As it stands right now I mainly play to keep in touch with some friends on PSU and the new content that comes out is a bonus.

lets see theres the improvements too the game play made over pso theres also some of the things i find annoying too that are improvements too, like forces and rangers cant lock on too there targets anymore but that also makes it so you dont end up with mindless game play i remember playing pso on very hard and just walking thought the maps with my lvl 200 force and wipeing everything out on the map and not thinking twice. the servers are policed making sure there are no cheaters or "dopers" lol the one thing i do really miss is the oldschool mags the pm is an alright replacement and the nanoblast is good too but humans and newmens are left with the short end of the stick maybe they can do an update later on in the game, and the mags let you make your charctor fit your style of game play, nothing like a force with evp maxed out and mst too, and theres the grants too that was the best spell ever lol i would say the old maps but it looks like there comeing back the 25th witch its going to tie the two games togeather im thinking where on pionner 2 right now and pionner 1 made landfall on raykos cus there was talk of a virus in the first game and after 200 years the virus just overran the planet and that is the end result well have to see what happens keep the story going it rocks!!!!

Well I guess for me, I play because it's different than every other MMORPG out on the market, just like PSO before it. PSU is the game me and my friend have been playing since launch, I know that I'm the only reason he still plays (I'm not trying to sound conceited, he really does only play when I play) I'm also very happy that that game has actual updates and events in a timely fashion unlike the original PSO. It's nice to play a game with different play styles (Hunter, ranger and Force respectably) and so many areas open but the problem with areas is that everyone just sticks with the area that has the best exp and mission rates. I'm sorry but this is turning into "towards the future" back on PSO all over again.

Given that I play with a handful of people who have been conveniently removed from the boards, I play the game for them more than myself.

I started for the game-play.

It's fun but doesn't require an extreme time investment.

Since then the community has kept me going, I think I've met more people on this game than any other!

I pretty much keep coming back because of the people I've met online, if they quit. I think I might go too. But then again, I really like PSU for some of it's innovations in the online gaming arena. I really like the idea of co-operative team based game play, especially when it's action based. I could care less about leveling or item collecting just because it has such long to limitless life span. I already stay for the community and fun times, what's all that RPG stuff for?

What motivates me? Well where do I start? Before Warcraft got it's own world, before final fantasy went beyond Cloud and Squall and into vana'diel, there was Phantasy Star Online. This game really drew me in with real-time combat and a cache of really cool looking weapons...not to mention good friends. I was once called "Son Goku" on the dreamcast. It was good times til i reached lvl 98 and a rather nasty hack called "player killing" (PK) ruined it all. I bought version 2 but the dreamcast died by that time. It was then re-released on gamecube and xbox. I played both versions but the gamecube version was short lived due to a damaged character file as a result of a game freeze while the game was saving (it saves ur game when you do anything from going to the store, to starting a mission). I had two characters on xbox: Brolly and Aeris. This was the changing point in my life where playing this game rewarded me in the most unlikely way possible...like meeting my wife on here, for instance. We've been together for 5 years and married 2. I owe this game alot...it kept me entertained all these years and introduced me to my wife. I hate that PSU doesnt get the advertising it deserves because not enough people are even aware that there is a PSU period. I've played 360 and ps2 versions so far and am considering installing the pc version. My characters on 360 were Yulia and Lion-O. My Ps2 has a Lion-O, an Aerith and a Kenshiro. My 360 was sold and deleted for reasons i do not wish to disclose, so right now i'm simply ps2...probably for good so if you see me online, i'm probably one of the few O.G's of the phantasy star world left roaming the lobbies, bases and dungeons so what motivates me you ask? I am living, breathing proof that after 8 years of history, some legends will never die!! LONG LIVE PSU!!!!!!!

I'm inclined to say "a mix of the above" but seeing I'm still enjoying PSU without online, I would have to say the story and gameplay is what makes me enjoy the game more.

A cup of coffee, a blindfold and a punch to the jaw everyday.

Now to be serious.

The gameplay for this game is brilliant. Since I'm quite the hack and slash fanatic it fit's under my bill quite nicely. Adding onto that the graphics are clean and well presented. So again; No complaints there.

Essentially, it's the friends and the people I meet up with that overall motivates me to consistently play. Many a night have I had a laughing fit over humorous intakes my parties have.

So in short, a mix of all the above really. Because I'm greedy.

I'd have to say a mix.Community/Guild.Some of the current S rank gear is cool, but waiting for the later release of items.Gameplay xD.
And I guess waiting on the next good thing.....pvp anyone?

After playing hours and hours of WoW, I come back to a game that is rather simplistic and yet pretty entertaining. It doesn't 24 other ppl to do something and if you chose to look for and item by yourself, you can do so. Still miss PSO though.

I think it really depends on which system you play on, I think for most of the PC/PS2 players it would be mostly from Community and Friends area. Just because there is a lack there of on those servers. Obviously I cant account for everyone, but I'd say that when new people join they really don't know anyone to help them get started on the game or play with them for that matter and thats why they don't stay long. Which as I have discussed with others, is one of the problems of why the PC/PS2 servers have a very small community compared to the Xbox servers.

People mostly. Good friends keep me around. That and the fact Ive been playing Phantasy Star since Sega Genesis day. Being a PSO vet helps too. So its a few different reasons I guess! O_o

huh, i never voted in this thread, thats weird

anyway, online community interaction is the BASIS for an online game.

you can have everything else offline and it would be exactly the same except for the interaction part.

so thats why an online game has to have lots of group events.

the two biggest flaws in the game are, no REAL tangible world to explore and low player interaction due to 6 player cap and no real tangible world to explore.

Can't beat some goods friends... sometimes lol

I paid money for it; that's my motivation: getting the most bang for my buck.

It sucks that to play offline, I need to have an internet connection. Balls to whoever decided that.

Since the 35 mil goal in MAG is a treasure box room deco instead of unlocking the ruins, nothing is keeping me here. ST has been driving this game into the ground since it came out and this is basically the last straw for me.

90% of all our updates are screwed up in some way. I had to deal with 2 of my chars freezing at the fortune lady since like, last october or before, and they didnt fix it until this recent update.
There is also no reward whatsoever for anyone left who's been here since the game came out. There's no support from ST at all to keep us old schoolers playing this Beta of a game and no encouragement to keep playing. Most all of the hardcore old schoolers have quit and have no desire to keep paying 10 bucks a month for nothing.
Hell, I couldnt even post this under my original account because the site says it's inactive so I had to make a new one just for it. Sorry I find no purpose coming to the official site at all because saying anything on it is totally redundant so I go to psow instead (which is still redundant, but atleast they have actual info about the game).

With this recent event, they left the main reward out from the start, and the population on the pc/ps2 side has dramatically decreased since the first day due to the sheer boredom of having only one single quest to do over and over again with no rewards at all in the end. No boxes, no loot, cuz those wont be unlocked until we get 50 mil or more points? How would ST expect players to actually stick around that long to grind one single quest that much so they can earn a standard game reward of ending/boss boxes?
One of my chars is on the leader board, and after seeing the 35mil I've been spamming the same run each day for hours for, I just dont care anymore. I'm not gonna keep spamming C runs for points for the rest of the week everyday, and there's no point in doing S since we cant even reap the rewards from it, so I'd rather just sit and let everyone else earn the points needed for ruins, which IS NOT something ST should be letting it's players be thinking.
And I'm sure I wont be the only one now. So then there goes another chunk of the community to help reach the goal. That's just bad planning and poor support for the players on ST's part.

Besides that, since Feb. of last year, I've had to deal with the billing servers not wanting to take MY MONEY each month, which is a problem that's still going on to this day. It seems that not only does ST not want to
support it's community at all, but they also just dont even want us to play period.

I can think of a million and one ways to help encourage ppl to stay and enjoy their time here longer (which would only require the most basic of copy and paste programming and no need for aditional graphics) but what's the point in suggesting anything when I already know from the get go that nothing we say will be heard or taken into consideration?

ST doesnt want to hear any of our complaints about anything. They just wanna hear our possitive opinions, which I'm sorry, but those from anyone who's been here and played long enough are gonna be hard to come by. Enough ppl have given a "i lov this game yay" responce and then quit maybe a month or less later, while everyone else who's complained about an issue (like billing or freezing fortune lady >.>) have been ignored until someone decided to get around to it months later, or not even at all.
I'm sure this post will be moved, or removed though for the reason I stated at the start of the paragraph. But I felt this topic needed this kinda negativity instead of the positivity that just re-enforces a nonevolving product.

What motives me to play PSU?

- I paid for an account back at launch on PSU on PC, built up a techer, and couldn't get a Me / Quick b/c the economy crashed (and they were impossible to find at the time in Onmagoug unless you were Cherry), later got bored of the game and let the subscription run out.
- I got a 360 Elite 2 months later, decided to get a PSU account on Live (and missed Firebreak).
- Every time I'd get off work for the 1st day of an event something catastrophic would happen (rollback, De Ragnus freezing on 1UP, etc).
- MAG came on my birthday after a long long wait.
- 2 days later my 360 RROD'd.
- Just got it back today from repair when the event is already over.

My motivation is simple, it's a moral one, Sega nor Microsoft nor the powers that be will keep me from hitting the level cap (ok... maybe Microsoft can).
