Hi All.. My first post!

Is there any relevance to the gameplay to keep unlocking and changing to new playstyles or are they just there for stats?

I've been playing a lot of practice matches and unlocked quite a few styles, but i'm not really getting any faster in shots and speed around the court. This is apparent when i leave career mode play and hit PLAY mode against top 10 players and get thrashed (Easy Level), or play a top player in a sponsorship match in career mode.

Ive played about 60 hours, moved thru the amateurs from 100 to 1 just fine, now ranked 81 out of 150 in the pros. I use an unhacked Wii with the latest OS and Wii Motion Plus.

Cheers, Rexx.

I have it on PS3 so may be different but as far as I can see the play styles are importants as they dictate what your player is good at, however the common consensus seems to be that the racquet is the most important upgrade. Surprised you have reached the pro tour and not noticed an improvement? are you winning the sponsorship matches ? if so then make sure you buy latest racquet as it certainly seemed to make a difference to me.

Douglas, man. Do you want a match sometime?? I've never played you and I've stopped playing ranked matches, too many quitters around.

Now, onto this thread.. playstyles really don't make much of a difference. I played a rookie who had the very best racquet and he was really good, had some long rallies! You could pick Rookie or All Around +, you'd still basically play the same.

Thanks or your reply guys.. Appreciated!!

So am i right to not waste time playing practice matches because they don't actually improve my skills? Are there any other ways to unlock items from the shop? I find the manual does not explain career mode that well.

Since my initial post I did win a sponsorship match against nadal, and behold there were a few new faster racquets in the store. That game was really won by serving hard out wide to Nadal and playing his struggled high returns crosscourt for winners, so i was lucky in a way.

I'm looking forward to playing online soon once i feel that i'm at my peak! hehe , sad to hear there are so many quitters online tho!! LAME!!

Well, I just play Career mode so here's my experience; I realized that playing practice matches against a partner, raised all 3 stats at the same time so I leveled up everything but almost playing just practice games.
Now, I played mostly with the "serve & volley" style because I do that, sever and volley. Later I got a powerful racket so I changed to "powerful base strokes" or something like that. Strange enough, whenever I shot from baseline I hit with a lot of power, but whenever I rushed the net, my volleys weren't any good because they went all to the center court, something very annoying because I thought that that was the way to the game just to make me lost a game. Once changed to "various shots", I got better at volley again, but did lost a bit of power from baseline, something very necessary to play against harder players who don't fall to the floor whenever you throw them a shot the other way they are running (AI cheats, you try to do a 180 turn, you eat the dust, AI won't...)
So, I think that the playstyle works.

Are there any other ways to unlock items from the shop?Winning the minigames will unlock some more clothes. The sponserships are the only ways to unlock more rackets, though.

Winning the Davis cup gives you racquets.
