Really look closely at it. Try to run like that. That's right, run by lifting your leg perpendicular and sideways to your body (actually, quite a bit higher than that). If you haven't managed to break your legs and/or your hips, you still look ridiculous. The animation looks fantastic as a 2d sprite, and it's quite a clever 2d animation trick, but in anything higher (2.5/3d), it just *doesn't* work.
If it had, you would better believe smash brothers would have used it. They didn't, instead they used the super-peel out which due to the effects it uses, *can* be duplicated in 3d and looks awesome at the same time. I fully support/hope sega does something like that for Sonic 4, but really, don't expect the wheel.
