View Full Version : What could have been....(sigh)

I've just finished AP and have to say that this game is...strange! Read the previews and instantly preordered it and then the release date came and not one review-usually a bad sign! However, played it and actually really liked it...loved the RPG elements, loved the stances and loved the story. But it could have been better-it wasn't the same game I preordered. Everyone is highlighting the poor AI, awful targetting and weird bugs and they're right to-this game, although I liked it enough to play it again, had so much potential! I hope if AP2 arrives (or whatever it's name-ditch the association etc etc) then you'll have listened to everyone and dropped the stupid mini games (I didn't mind them but the overwhelming feeling is that they suck) and polished the final product WITHOUT being rushed because this could have been a world beater....

This wasn't rushed. All Obsidian games have a certain degree of "jank" to 'em. However, they're still better than most AAA overhyped titles even with their flaws.

Alpha Protocol is no different. I'd take this over polished mediocrity any day of the week.

they need to stop selling both "jank" titles and polished mediocrity for full price. regardless of buyer beware and personal choice it still irks me that publishers push this crap at 50-60 when after everything is said and done it should have been pushed for 20-30. i am not arriving at this conclusion scientifically by any means but judging from the justified disappointment players are expressing it is safe to assume the worth of alpha protocol certainly isn't even 50 dollars. oh well, market and consumer behavior is tough to talk about but in the end i can say i personally feel ripped off. hope you don't.

Well, I paid $44.99 at KMART and I would've gladly paid $59.99.

All games have a certain degree of "jank" to 'em, but then again, I'm a person who sees negatives in everything, but I also don't harp on 'em when the grander experience is as good as Alpha Protocol.

This is a game I'd gladly buy all over again at a higher price tag. I'll play it at least 2 more times.

when consumers spend their dollar to support declining quality the market becomes harder to bear for everybody.

Fair enough-I wasn't massively criticizing it. Like I said I'm on the second playthrough and still think its good but it COULD have been better. You can't deny there was something happening during production-the bugs, the sometimes too close camera and the stuttering all point to poor design ideas. Then there was the email and the reviews-nearly every game mag and website ripped it giving it like 4/10! I personally don't think that email/response was actually from anyone on the team but the game IS rushed if they push out something that during a mission the framerate drops and I fall through the floor! Like the game, just.....sort out out the niggles and it'll be amazing!

I'll take flawed greatness over perfected mediocrity any day of the week, bud.

I'm glad I voted for Alpha Protocol with my gaming dollar. Heck, I'll go buy 5 more copies just in spite of your attitude. Good day.

well obsidian has had plenty of time as a team to learn from past mistakes so if you want to keep making them excuses and prop their "flawed greatness" to the level of perfected A-game material by measure of its worth in dollars then by all means. saying you will take flawed greatness over perfected mediocrity adds no further impact to your point because nobody is saying anything about "perfected" mediocrity. "polished" mediocrity implies a different package entirely and most of us seem to be in agreement that we would rather have an overall perfected and polished game over both flawed greatness and polished mediocrity.

my attitude of buyer remorse and corrective reflection has inspired you to spiteful action... only a troll would feel the need to... whatever, man. as long as you enjoy your extra full price copies gained in spite of something trivial yet fair.

People don't seem to grasp that implementing the overarching plotlines, especially with the multitude of choices available, must be extremely complex.

People Judge primarily for gameplay in a game designed for the overall story, while the gameplay is definately adequite and made up for by other elements.

I admit that the minigames suck though, I'm against any mini-game in an RPG.
Even though I rarely get any wrong. However, I have very rarely had any bugs (one or two in total).

This is why piracy exists. To avoid paying for half-assed games like these.
Sure, piracy is stealing, but so is charging full price for this half-assed piece of horsesh*t

Wrong. You have the choice to buy a game. The developers/publishers don't have the choice to stop piracy. Piracy is theft and there is no reason for it. None whatsoever.

And Alpha Protocol is well worth paying money for, but for people like you, you'll never get an honest job and pay money for something whether you think it's good or bad. Pirates... You're entitled to nothing, except a spot in a cell with Big Bubba and a bar of soap.

Honestly dude, I've literally finished this game and started a new one straight after. Yeah, it's got its bugs and it's got it's issues-but, if you look hard enough, you'll find a great game in there somewhere. Don't believe everything you read.
