View Full Version : Dreamcast Makes a Digital Return!

It's still thinking: Two of the games released on SEGA's last home console system, the Dreamcast, are making a triumphant return to Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network! Coming later this year, the debut digital release will be Sonic Adventure, followed by the wild-driving zaniness of Crazy Taxi.
If you lived & loved Dreamcast a decade ago, now is your chance to relive some of your favorites -- and if you never owned one, you can now dive right in and experience some of the most creative and compelling games to show up on the system.
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4063/4686161689_35f4008173.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/segaamerica/4686161689/)
Sonic Adventure will arrive in the Fall of 2010. This game marked Sonic's debut on a sixth generation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sixth_generation_console) console system, and features multiple playable characters in a 3D world, super-fast Sonic gameplay, and of course, the ever-popular Chao Gardens. Sonic Adventure's release on Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network will mark the 11th anniversary of the Dreamcast's release.
Crazy Taxi, meanwhile, provides the kind of wild arcade-powered fun that felt perfectly at home on the Dreamcast: the game's title is as apt as can be, as the player pilots a taxi cab around a fully-realized city modeled after San Francisco, complete with plenty of steep hills to send your taxi airborn (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-7IEPTAoTg) as you cart terrified passengers to their destination (or wherever you feel like taking them).

But maybe a bigger story than these two games coming out is just the fact that Dreamcast is here again. While SEGA has brought back and highlighted some of the amazing games from its Master System and Genesis era, this is the first time in years that the Dreamcast era of SEGA history has been brought to the forefront.
“The Dreamcast is fondly remembered by a large community of dedicated fans as a console that was ahead of its time in terms of graphics, quality and online gaming” commented Haruki Satomi, VP of Digital Business at SEGA of America and SEGA Europe. “There are few things that are more requested from us than making Dreamcast classics available for download in today’s digital market place. We’re very excited to begin offering gamers our beloved Dreamcast titles again on the current console systems.”
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4009/4686794306_f08ae6e557.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/segaamerica/4686794306/)
Each game is based on the original Dreamcast incarnation, featuring all of the gameplay that older players fell in love with. The games incorporate all-new enhancements and features such as high resolution visuals and surround sound. There will also be online leader boards, allowing players to compare their skills with friends across the world! In addition to this, all-new Achievement and Trophy integration will be available for each game released.
Launched on September 9, 1999, the SEGA Dreamcast was ahead of its time -- critically acclaimed and still loved by fans, the system featured such innovations as being the first console to have online gaming, and even had the capability to run a web browser.
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4038/4686161741_89de1f607f.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/segaamerica/4686161741/)
Both Sonic Adventure and Crazy Taxi will be playable at this year's E3 as well, so check them out there or stay tuned for more news -- and give a big 'welcome back' the Dreamcast!

I asked this in another topic, but I guess this is the best topic for me to ask instead of the "what games do you want to return" topic. :>
Clumsy, do you know anything about a possibility of these Dreamcast digital releases coming to PC (through Steam)? I ask this mostly because ESRB listed Sonic Adventure recently for PS3, XBox360 and PC.
Also, even though Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing was released for the PC, there's no mention of it on SEGA's website (as far as I know), that's why I'm wondering if the same is happening to Sonic Adventure, not being listed on SEGA's website for the PC but being released for it anyway. ^^;
Another question is if Sonic Adventure will be truly in 720p (that is, 1280x720, widescreen), or if it's just going to be 4:3 with black borders, like in the screenshots.
I guess I'm kinda being a bit annoying, asking these questions in different topics, but I'm really curious about them. :3

Noted, but we're only talking about what's been currently released. This will be passed up the chain o' command, but I don't have any new info for you.
If you have ideas - just let us know, I posted a game feedback thread that's in the Digital forum - you can post what games you want there and note the PC concerns you have.

Sonic Adventure 2 seems logical... I'd actually be a bit annoyed if they didn't include the sequel. The dreamcast Phantasy Star game perhaps. Don't see the point in Shenmue 1 and 2 because we'll probably never see Shenmue 3... I wouldn't mind an update of Chu Chu Rocket either.
it's a pity SA doesn't have proper widescreen although if the game is truely rendering at least in high resolution (1280x or something) and antialiasing 4x or something at least it'll look a lot nicer and surround sound seems cool

I was trying to send this email but I can put it here. Also could you make those 2 games available on wii ware? I have a game cube controller to play it on. I loved the sonic adventure series but i don't have xbox or playstation.
Dear Sega,
I went to the chao laboratory website . Then I noticed there were
no updates since 2004. I thought maybe it was because no one played
it. I love Sonic Adventure 2 Battle and i still play it. I would like
to request to chao's and sega to put a new game for game systems that
is Sonic adventure XD. Dexter's Cut and Sonic Adventure 2 Battle as a
combo pack game for the latest systems. There would be the chao lobby
but this time the areas from sonic adventure XD would have portals to
them in the lobby. I think may be those areas are unlock able trough
the Sonic Adventure XD game. Now I would like the story-line to be the
same, but the only thing that changes is the graphics and the ability
to go to the chao garden anytime you want in sonic adventure XD. Now
there could also be an area for mini games. So on the main menu there
are three options. Sonic XD, Sonic 2 Battle, and mini-games. Now in
the mini-games you start off with just Sonic, Amy, Tails, and
Knuckles. Although you can unlock characters like shadow, rouge,
omega, and others by completing all there levels/ story-lines. This
game could also connect to wifi so you can have things like chao
karate, chao race, 2-4 player battles, and other mini-games played
with other people or friends. I love the 3D green hill zone level and
how there are costumes for the characters. I would like it if you
could play levels with characters not in the story line. So for
instance shadow could play Sonic's levels. Playing 2 player in the
chao garden could be fun. Now I know, the upgrades. Now I thought it
could be gray shaded and omochao could fly up and say, "Sorry, only
(One of the sonic characters name) can get this upgrade." I loved how
in sonic adventure XD you moved through a city finding levels. Now I
thought what the gameplay would be is instead of all the same the game
could have the ability to go other places like in Sonic XD but the
levels to be like Sonic adventure 2 Battle levels. the grading system
would be the same so you could get costumes for each characters if you
got all rank A's on every mission. Since Sonic, Shadow, Tails, Dr.
Eggman, Knuckles, and Rouge already had costumes theirs would stay the
same. Omega would then now be classified as The machines like tails
and Dr. Eggman. Big the Cat would be Classified with Omega too. Thank
you for taking the time to read this.
Sincerely,
Jack Vanden Hoek.

It won't come, already resigned myself to it. I liked shenmue 1 and 2 I didn't realise how much of a flop it was in sales. Hardly something to celebrate a fortune spent on a game that completely failed to save the dreamcast and probably contributed to bankrupting Sega.
Better to accept it than expect it.
But yeah definately if they were going to make a 3 they'd have to release 1 and 2 on xbl/psn... personally I'd rather they didn't release Shenmue 1 and 2 on xbl/psn unless they are planning on concluding the trilogy because that would just be stupid.

Dev'd on the Saturn. RESET. Re-Dev'd on the DC. Not a wise move for a leviathon of a game.
#2 was a sacraficial lamb. What was done with it, is comparable to opening a tennis ball store in a bowling alley. :) Then when the dust settled, blaming tennis balls for the lack of sales.

It won't come, already resigned myself to it. I liked shenmue 1 and 2 I didn't realise how much of a flop it was in sales. Hardly something to celebrate a fortune spent on a game that completely failed to save the dreamcast and probably contributed to bankrupting Sega.
1.) Shenmue I was one of the best selling Dreamcast games...it sold 1.2 million copies, which would've made way more than the twenty million price tag that the first game had...the main reasons the series cost 70 million was because of all of the R&D (there was A LOT of it), and the wasted Saturn version (both games were completed, maybe even some of the third).
2.) There were much, much, bigger losses for SEGA than Shenmue could've ever been, and, finally,
3.) SEGA never went bankrupt.
...
That said, give me Shenme I and Shenmue II on XBLA/PSN!

Not sure on the first question and certainly can't confirm anything. So consider that a skip, but a recommendation that you just suggest whatever you want to see and we can all see what happens.
It's not really as simple as just pulling from fan requests, but we do value your opinion and outlook on what you are interested in - we wouldn't pose the question if we didn't want to know the answer.

There are four things I want to know about this Sonic Adventure port.
1. Will this Sonic Adventure port have the original black chao from the Dreamcast version and/or a remake or replacement of the Chao Adventure mini-game?
http://chao.hippotank.com/sa2/images/bm/black.gif
2. Are the chao gardens going to be as horribly programmed as they were in DX? I remember playing DX and having trouble petting my chao. I'd be standing right over them, and the chao will give absolutely no reaction. I'm not going to get another port if the chao garden is as neglected as it was the last time. The chao gardens, to me, are the most important parts of the game.
3. I know that this game is in HD, but how improved are the graphics? I don't care if this game is in HD if the surrounding environment's polygons are as flat as they were in the original games.
4. When I played Super Sonic and I saw the movie scene introducing the monstrous Ultimate Chaos in the original game, I was actually afraid to fight that thing. But then, I saw the in-game model of Chaos and I was majorly disappointed. The two versions of Ultimate Chaos looked nothing alike.
Will Ultimate Chaos look the way he did in the realistic movie scene this time around?

Note that the black chao in the Dreamcast Sonic Adventure are not the same as the black chao found in SADX. The SA black chao is a dark color with yellow and blue highlights. The SADX black chao is black, with no highlights.
The SA black chao can also mate with the gold chao to make a bronze chao, or with the silver chao to make an onyx chao.
Has it been confirmed whether the black chao will be like the one in SA, or are they going to do what they did in SADX?

Oh and if Shenmue is released on XBLA and PSN, make it so the save game can be carried over to Shenmue 2. Just like it was on the Dreamcast. :D

Unless I'm mistaken, it's not illegal to have download emulators/ROMs as long as you own the real thing.
Most people don't care about this rule, and I've never heard of anyone getting caught.
Still, if you are the type of person with the kind of integrity to work within the law, whether or not you think you'll get in trouble, you can choose not to get it if you do not own the real thing.

I just hope that they don't make an SA2 Battle DLC "upgrade" The Dreamcast never had these "upgrade packs"
unlikely. these are the features they added to battle
Changes from Dreamcast
Multi player
The 2P versus mode is considered the biggest change between the Dreamcast and the remake. It is most likely the inspiration of the term "Battle" that is added to the title.
The 2P menu was completely redesigned with a different background tune. The players no longer have to choose a group making it possible for characters to face off against characters in their own alignment. Example: Sonic can now fight against Amy Rose.
All characters that needed to be unlocked with an A rank with specific characters are now available from the start. Moreover, they were each given special stats that made each of them unique instead of just being clones of the main characters. For example, Chaos who had the same speed as Rouge in the original now has become much slower. Each character also received their own unique special attacks. Metal Sonic's attacks were completely removed and replaced with the ability to activate the Black Shield which defends against special attacks.
The playing system was altered so that players are no longer required to play 3 stages in a row.
More stages were made playable, such as City Escape and Dry Lagoon. Dry Lagoon was also redesigned in 2 player mode to take place at night. Also, special races were added such as the grind race and the shooting races.
An option menu was added. In it, the player can set a handicap, remove or enable a time limit, or set the traditional rules of VS mode from the Dreamcast.
A new character was added, Dark Chao and its walker, in the place of Big the Cat.
The secret character skins where also changed both in appearance and how they are obtained.
Gameplay
The Hero and Dark sides now have separate lives, meaning that losing a life on the Hero side will not affect the lives on the Dark side and vise versa.
During Knuckles and Rouge's stages, a red exclamation point will appear when a player is right on top of an emerald/key.
In Tails and Dr. Eggman's stages, it used to be possible for their machines to receive damage even with a barrier shield. This was taken away in this version of the game.
Some sound effects were added during gameplay, such as the sound that is made just before the GUN Hornets fire their bombs.
Since the game is run by a faster processor than its predecessor, the game does not slow down during hectic situations.
Some stages were also slightly modified either gameplay wise or graphically. Some gameplay changes can make a level easier or harder. In the Cosmic Wall stage, the A rank scores were raised significantly in the GameCube version (1st mission 53,000 -> 80,000; 4th mission 45,000 -> 75,000; last mission 50,000 -> 100,000). The Crazy Gadget stage received the most infamous graphic change. The green "X"'s on the small boxes where changed to red "X"s most likely because it looked too similar to the logo of Nintendo's rival system, Xbox.
Tails' and Eggman's lock-on laser is now able to mark targets at a faster rate (once every 8 frames on GameCube, whereas it takes 12 frames to mark each target in Dreamcast). Their Volkan Cannon is also able to achieve a faster rate of fire by a similar margin.
The first frame of Knuckles' Spiral Upper attack, and Rouge's Screw Kick, has roughly double the reach on Dreamcast. This was removed in the remake, leaving it with only the same reach as the rest of the move. Additionally, a few more objects were given immunity to those moves, most notably the safes around the perimeter of Security Hall.
Kart Racing was given more features. By completing all of the characters' missions, a secret kart could be unlocked for each one with more advanced stats. Sonic's secret kart is actually the same kart that was available on the downloadable High-Speed Trial Kart Racing from the Dreamcast. The Eggrobo that was also downloadable on the Dreamcast could be unlocked after completing all of Rouge's missions. Chao also becomes a selectable racer in this game after completing Tails' missions.
Graphics
The main characters received slight modifications and better shading. Their shadows also became more detailed.
Camera angles are changed or improved.
A special background was added when a character would use a special attack.
Objects that were transparent, such as the balloons and the Artificial Chaos, were made solid.
Many light effects such as the flashing red lights in Iron Gate and the flashing green lights in Egg Quarters were removed or made simpler.
Much of the text on Tails and Eggman's walkers are removed. Including Eggman's insignia that was on the back of his walker.
The GUN robots also had a downgrade in appearance. The glistening effect that the Beetles had was removed. Also, the exhaust flames on the backs of some of the robots were also removed.
The Shield Hunter's shields changed in appearance given a darker shade of red and becoming much narrower.
Cut scene changes
Cut scenes load much faster than their Dreamcast counterparts.
Some details for non-playable characters, such as Amy's teeth and Maria's eyelashes, were removed in the remake for some reason.
In the scene before Knuckles enters the Death Chamber, the Eggman signs from Pyramid Cave that were visible in the background were removed. Furthermore, the camera angle on Sonic during the last moments of the scene completely changed.
In the scene where Rouge finds out about Project Shadow, the screen she is looking at is noticeably different. The Dreamcast shows the screen displaying a picture with the Biolizard while the remake just shows the screen flashing "DANGER". The screen is also changed to display Sonic, Tails, and Amy in the ARK rather than showing that the Chaos Emerald is near.
Some sound effects were added or changed. Notably, in the cut scene where Shadow figures out Rouge's true intentions, the Dreamcast version plays her theme song throughout the entire scene. However the GameCube version changed it so that it would cut from Rouge's theme song and then go to Shadow's theme song.
Chao World
The Chao World was also drastically changed.
Omochao no longer appears at the gate to greet you.
The Chao's stats that could only be viewed via the VMU can now be viewed in the game itself.
The Chao Kindergarten was given more features, such as the Black Market, which was planned for original but never put in the final, and the Fortune Teller.
Items that needed to be imported from Chao Adventure 2, such as seeds, can now be bought at the black market.
The Chao Doctor gives a full report of your Chao's personality and favorite food.
The VMU port was replaced with a GameBoy Advance port. It can be used to transport Chao to the Tiny Chao Garden on Sonic Advance or Sonic Advance 2. They can also be transported to Sonic Pinball Party. In addition to importing Chao to the GBA, the port can also be used to release Chao or move them to another memory card.
Chao Karate is added.
The background music for the Chao Lobby was changed. The music used for the Dreamcast version was used for the Chao Cave instead. Also, the Chao Race entrance background music changed. The music used for the Dreamcast version was used for the Gameboy Advance port instead.
The layouts of all three Chao gardens were changed. The river that was in the Hero Garden and the cave that was in the Dark Garden were all removed.
The Tiny Chao Garden minigame can be downloaded from the game to a GBA.
The characters attacks were removed to prevent the player from accidentally hitting their Chao. Though, Sonic can still use the Bounce Attack while Tails, Eggman, Knuckles, and Rouge's attacks can still be selected via the mini menu.
Other
An opening sequence which the Dreamcast notably lacked is added just before the title screen.
The title screen that used to be just of Sonic and Shadow now includes all characters. This is also true for the default menu theme.
The menu themes of the playable that needed to be downloaded via the internet are available by default. This also includes the Shadow theme that was never released in America. The Omochao, Amy, and Maria theme can be bought at the Black Market in Chao World after collecting a certain amount of emblems.
The Sound Test was moved from the Options menu to the Extras menu.
Big's stage cameos were removed, and in some cases replaced with rings. Though, Big will make cameos in the cut scenes if the A button is pressed rapidly.

Let's see.
The list of what could get stripped and resold for $5:
The extra karts added for SA2B
The multiplayer skins exclusive to the Gamecube version
The bgm for the mutiplayer screen changed to the Dreamcast version and changed back for the Battle "Upgrade"
Extra characters, such as the Chao Battle Mech or chaos 0, needing to be unlocked Dreamcast style before the Battle patch
the opening sequence that was missing from the Dreamcast version
The rest would attempt to be sold off as part of the Dreamcast version when it's really the Game Cube version.

The multiplayer skins exclusive to the Gamecube version(only 6 exclusive costumes and they are hard to unlock)
The bgm for the mutiplayer screen changed to the Dreamcast version and changed back for the Battle "Upgrade" (too small compared to the rest of the additions)
Extra characters, such as the Chao Battle Mech or chaos 0, needing to be unlocked Dreamcast style before the Battle patch (stupid. just plain stupid)
the opening sequence that was missing from the Dreamcast version (you can view it anywhere on the internet. so its also stupid)
The rest would attempt to be sold off as part of the Dreamcast version when it's really the Game Cube version.

Yes, it is stupid, this is why I'm upset about Sega doing doing near identical stupid stuff with Sonic Adventure Arcade.
Changes made between the Game cube version and the arcade version:
The title screen was reverted to the Dreamcast title screen, can be changed back for $5.
Metal sonic reward for getting all emblems removed, can be put back for $5
mission mode removed, can be put back for $5
Frame rate stay near 60 (this is a good one)
Game Gear games removed, Status of return: Unknown
Achievements added
Leader board added
I don't know about you, but having to buy what was stripped out just to have the complete game doesn't sound right. And from my perspective, Sega Striped out that stuff just so they could pull the wool over our eyes and say it was the dreamcast version.
I have 2 copies of the Real Dreamcast version so I know what it looks like and what in it.

I'm afraid they used DX's coding. All of DX's bug fixes and Bugs are still in there, minus the frame rate one.

ok i might not of got evrey thing that was different right but there is a few more changes
all of the billboard images are replaced except the sonic x and cream one.
A few environment textures have been replaced with higher-resolution ones
All cutscenes are skippable.
Chao Garden is at DX version standards, allowing you to create Hero and Dark types by feeding them special fruit. The only clear difference is that the 'Chao Adventure' machine (which was still branded as such in the PC version despite no GBA connectivity) has been reskinned as the 'Chao Naming Machine' (its main function in the XBLA and PC versions, with the only other function being the perma-deletion 'Chao "Goodbye"'). Also, the Chao Garden save data is thankfully still saved as a separate file.
avatar rewards (http://www.xbox360achievements.org/game/sonic-adventure-dx-directors-cut/awardables/) were added (the ps3 version will have home rewards instead.)
im probably still going to get it for the avatar rewards.

id love for PSO ep. 1 &2
Space Channel 5
and Sonic Adventure 2...
But SEGA im confused with Sonic Adventure you had the game with all the graphical updates from DX and then the special DX features as a DLC... Not bad for the price... but you cant do that with Sonic Adventure 2 because there were major things changed between the two versions such as Big the Cat being playable in the original... so if you do bring it back would you include features from both versions to make fans to the DC and the younger fans who first played it on the Gamecube happy or are you gonna just be selective on what gets featured

Can a Sega rep please confirm that PS3 Crazy Taxi will have a custom soundtrack option? IIRC, even the PSP Crazy Taxi had that option. It should be possible for the PS3 with a little effort.

I have both the original SA2 and SA2B. When was Big the Cat a playable character?
I've also yet to hear if the original DC black chao has been reintroduced in this SA port.
http://chao.hippotank.com/sa2/images/bm/black.gif
Can someone who has downloaded this port tell me if this chao can be found in the game? It it's in the game, you should be able to find a black egg with blue spots aboard the Egg Carrier.
I'm willing to bet they went and used the DX monotone black chao again.
EDIT: Oops. Sorry. The original black egg is actually blue on top, and it has pink spots. It's easily distinguishable with the DX monotone black egg.

So it says on Wikipedia. But I don't remember Big ever being a playable character. Maybe I just never unlocked him.
Other changes made to Battle and DX versions included smaller, less detailed chao gardens. And DX was just horribly programmed. You could be standing right over a chao and be petting, but the chao will fail to respond and act like you're not there.
These changes were very disappointing to me, as the chao to me were the most important part of the games.
This is another thing I have to wonder about this port. Since it's so much like SADX, will it still have the chao garden glitches from the GC port?

Sega welcome back to the Dreamcast age. Now that friends can link up by the hundreds on internet , how about releasing Daytona USA with up to 8-16 player support, so you can play with your friends over the web, like in the arcades, they used to have 8 Daytona USA arcade cabinets all linked up and we would all have a blast. Those were good times. See if Sega can make this happen on Playstation and XBOX DLC content. Thank you.

As much as I like the idea of downloable Dreamcast games, I am not sure the games they add as a download are worth it. Reason being as sega has now Sonic adventure and and add on DX for ps3 well sega left glitches in the game and more. Honestly if sega can not spend the extra time on the games they add to ps3 or xbox as down loadable they might as well keep their games. Sega need to spend more time updating and removing the glitches and such before they put them up as downloadable. To me this is pure laziness on sega's part and it shows they dont care. After seeing what wasnt fixed with Sonic Adventure I doubt Ill buy another one of sega's downloadable dreamcast games. In all honest if they cant do it right dont do it at all, there is no need for sega to leave glitches in those games and they should add wide screen 720-1080p on all downloadable games. Sega this crap that you dont do is getting old and you as a company need to fix it or go out of business completely, or give it to a company that has a better rep and will actually do it right not half-assed as sega has been doing!!!!!

You know, this is one of those things that seem like an awesome idea at first, but then people hate it.
It's gonna be like DX all over again, unless Sega fixes camera and control issues. These were fine/looked over on the Dreamcast, but in modern gaming, crappy controls are no excuse for a developer like Sega.
I've never hated the original controls, but they could definitely do with some tweaking. Just because a scheme works on one system does not make it universal.

Yo, good news about sonic adventure on xbl, i persoanlly loved the game. However, there are Two games that i would absolutely l-o-v-e to see make a return to xbl.
Namely the unforgettably amazing Shenmue series and the excellent capcom fighting game series Powerstone.
A follow up to Shenmue would of course be a dream come true for all fans of the amazing rpg series, but honestly, we all know that its sadly never gonna happen. (though we will keep dreaming)
Powerstone i think would be a hit. Its great for frantic, fast gameplay, perfectly suited to xbl and was very innovative for its day. Graphically it still stands up even now. In fact, the dreamcast was WAY ahead of its time graphically over every other console.

And what exactly was there other than that? The Chao Garden? Because those were the only major noticeable things about Sonic Adventure 2 and were the key gameplay elements of the game.
It's hardly "the best 3D Sonic game" and greatly lacks any kind of "diversity" that you were trying to claim it had. Hell, the first Sonic Adventure title had more to do on it than SA2.

SA = 5 styles of platforming + fishing, about 20 levels most used multiple times, and adventure fields, great soundtrack, port features better graphics, mission mode and metal sonic... everything else gets worse(such as camera, glitches, chao garden, ect.)
SA2 = 3 styles of platforming, about 30 different levels each having 5 unique playthroughs, epic soundtrack each song perfectly fitting the level or setting, port features better graphics, better controls, remake of Green Hill Zone, big multiplayer, other differences are debatable based on prefences.
Other Sonic games = less people to play as, aproximatly same length level wise, each sonic game gets better graphics(save Heroes and Shadow which were worse than SA2), hit and miss contols, glitches and soundtrack, not many bonuses for getting good ranks or completing the game, and no updated ports to compare.
So having said that I think technicly SA2 is the best overall, although that all in the eye of the beholder and with Unleashed's speed and graphics, and Colors' overall gameplay they do come close, but they still lack diversity and although the point of a sonic game is to play as sonic I still enjoy mixing things up personaly, otherwise it would get boring doing the same thing over and over again.

Adventure 2 was only a "big game" because of it being used as the celebratory 10th anniversary game. It sold far less than Sonic Adventure did on the Dreamcast, namely because it was released months after Sega said the Dreamcast would be discontinued. SA2 didn't see any high sales until it hit the GameCube, namely due to it being "Baby's First Sonic Game" since a good number of GameCube owners REFUSED to ever touch a Sega game or console. Don't count on Sonic Shuffle, though. No one really misses it or ever regarded it as a good game.

Daytona and Die Hard would be difficult due to the licensing issues tied to them. NiGHTS was recently re-released, but sadly only in Japan on the PS2 (which was an enhanced PC port). If NiGHTS and Panzer Dragoon were to return, they'd be the PC ports rather than the actual Saturn games since Saturn emulation is still tricky and a good chunk of source codes are gone.

Wouldn't the title of "Baby's first Sonic Game" be reserved for Sonic Heroes instead? Granted SA2 (as well as Sonic Advance) was the first Sonic game to be on a Nintendo system, but Sonic Heroes was really the first Sonic game to have a multiplatform release, ergo more kids would have their first exposure to Sonic via Heroes than SA2 Battle.

No, SA2B is definitely the rightful owner of that title. The only reason Heroes sold as well as it did was because of SA2B. The Advance series mainly did well because it was the first 2D Sonic game in a long time. And even then, look at how many people cry for an Adventure 3...and for all the wrong reasons, to boot.

A lot of the fans on this thread have a lot of good ideas, But i think for the last 12 years Sega really hasn't been listening to it loyal fans. It seems that year after year Sega tries to come out with new ideas based on old popular Dreamcast Games. When I saw that they we're coming out with a Dreamcast collection for the present consoles I wanted to know which games would be on the roster. Finally when the titles where released I was disappointed to see Sega's idea of a good collection. I mean Sega of America must really think "We" the fans are really dumb to release 4 games that are already available on the PS Network and Xbox live and think we'll buy into it. I don't like being treated like a kid since today's kids weren't even born when the Dreamcast was around. So what dose that tell Sega? It tells you that you should listen to the suggestions of the veteran gamers that have been with Sega for awhile. I have been a loyal fan of Sega for 20 years and I am tired of seeing Sega struggle to make ends meet. Instead of coming out with one hit wonders you need to bring the best of the best out to the field, such as Sky's of Arcadia, Blue Stinger, Jet Grind radio, etc. maybe bring out the Sakura Wars series that was never released in the United States. Maybe do a Pantasy Star Online Collection or a Shenmue Collection with the never before seen Shenmue 3. I mean these where games that dominated the Dreamcast during it's last years of life and still dominate today. I still own a Sega Genesis, Saturn and Dreamcast. I even bought a JP Dreamcast when i went to Japan Last year so I could play Dreamcast Games never released in the US with out using a boot disk. The Dreamcast was the strongest system ever made by Sega and it's still dominates over the PS2 in hardware and power. Listen to the fans.
Tsukento
03-03-2011, 05:51 AM
A Phantasy Star Online collection would be pointless. What purpose would there be to have all versions of the same game? PSO was just finished being supported by Sega in Japan on December of last year. They're working on PSO2, so going back to the original makes little to no sense. Blue Stinger is also not possible because it's not a Sega game.
The Dreamcast Collection in no way implies it's any sort of "ultimate collection." Most of the disappointment lies within the fanbase who got way too excited and believed it was even possible to throw several Dreamcast games onto one disc, let alone a DVD. The Dreamcast Collection is (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000XRHZ30/) no (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001EQPDOM/) different (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000G5R8JA/) from (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0043KI082/) sets (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002W5GI8Y) like (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002W5GI98/) this (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001E3VKC4/). So why people are suddenly going crazy over this as if it were a new thing is ridiculous. There's also the matter that it's also being released on PC. Top it off with the fact that it's cheaper on disc than buying all four games digitally, as well as the fact that it saves people space on their hard drives, as DC games take up quite a lot of space.

Configuration application that comes bundled with the release does not work. It does not make any changes to the included INI(tialization) file, nor does manually editing said INI work file either. The only workaround is to nest a folder for each game within a 'SEGA' folder within your My Documents folder and copy the INI over to each of the new configuration folders. It's a rather dismal design. People tend to like it when they can configure their games to match their preferences from the get go, not being forced to stay at an insane windowed resolution. Quality control people, can you dig it?

I also have this issue, and a few others on the Steam forums as well, I think it's only the Steam version that has this save issue (not sure if the other digital versions have any problems, but most likely it's only the steam version).

some questions for anyone who has the xbox version.
1.do the games appear separately on your games libary? or does just dreamcast collection appear on it? if so are the two games that are exclusive to the collection appear to be buyable separately? meaning that someone could just rent or burrow a copy of the collection and then then get the trial or buy the games that are supposedly time limited to the collection?
2. any differences in the two new ports from the original? (and in space channel 5s case the ps2 port.)

The games aren't exclusive to the collection. All four are on XBLA. I would guess that the DC Collection is just a hub, which splits the four games separately, since they have their own achievements and awards, similar to other compilation discs on the 360.

maybe instead of rereleasing the games, they should update systems to include backwards compatabilty to play saturn or dreamcast game discs, but it might be about money so I kind of understand because they probably won't make a profit going that route

I got the Dreamcast collection on PC DVD. I also have the previous ports of Crazy Taxi, Sonic Adventure DX and Sega Bass Fishing on PC. Here's my thoughts:
All games use Starforce protection (at least on my UK DVD copy). There are hacks out there that get round that though, if it puts you off. At least the newest Starforce you don't have to reboot to install the protection driver...
The games run at a maximum on 1024x768 (4:3) or 1280x720 (widescreen). This is lower than the maximums available for the previous ports of Crazy Taxi and Sonic Adventure DX, but a lot better than the previous Sega Bass Fishing port.
Space Channel No 5 Part 2 = never on PC before, seems fine, but the sound effects are by default very quiet compared to the music (an issue across most of the ports, or perhaps it's my 7.1 surround system causing the issue, I'm not sure...
Crazy Taxi = the previous port ran in higher resolution (but not widescreen) and is a bit less glitchy (I noticed the trees half break up when you're in the air at a 45 degree angle, and shadows don't see that consistent). It was also easier to replace the soundtrack on the previous port as it was in MP3 format, plus the company names are still in that. Original version (by Strangelite/Empire Interactive) = better!
Sonic Adventure DX = the previous port ran in higher resolution (but not widescreen) and looks a lot better as anti-aliasing works, as opposed to a sort of full screen blur effect the new port is running. The new port still supports mouse to play (click and drag) which may or may not be advertised widely. The previous port had an issue where you had to swap from CD1 to 2 then back to 1 in order to pass the disc check, which was a bit daft, but Sega did temporarily offer to replace CDs to fix that, or you could get a noCD hacked version I suppose. Basically the original PC port is better (and features the bonus GameGear games that the new one allegedly does not.
Sega Bass Fishing = the new port is hugely better than the previous PC port. The previous PC port had a maximum resolution of 640x480, less fog, less water effects and some unfiltered textures, with a lot of glitchy graphics. The new port runs much higher resolution and looks like a proper HD port. So the new port is much better!
So overall I'd recommend getting the old PC ports of Crazy Taxi and Sonic Adventure DX, but get Space Channel No 5 Part 2 and Sega Bass Fishing on the Dreamcast Collection.
Phew!

Incidentally I made sound packs so you can have the original soundtracks in the old ports of Crazy Taxi (soundtrack ported from Dreamcast version) and Crazy Taxi 3 (soundtrack ported from Xbox version), and I'll look into changing the soundtrack of the new Crazy Taxi port soon (although it's more complicated as it has more songs). There are guides out there to changing the soundtrack on PC and Xbox360 versions already though.

Sega should just give up with those ports. They look like they are struggling to make them and the quality of the ports is disappointing, so just give up and do something else. Or simply pick one game, and make a true HD port of it.

Well I'm thankful they decided to port SA to the 360, seeing as I only had the PC version with all its frame rate issues before. But I do feel a little shorted having bought the DX dlc: I was finally ready to try making a blue translucent chao (shiny blue + jewel), but started hearing that those results aren't possible on the 360/PS3 ports, with or without the DX dlc. Could this be fixed sometime down the track?

Bring the Dreamcast itself back. You people at SEGA had a good thing going until you discontinued the Ultimate Gaming System. Better yet; make a whole new console and some GOOD games for it. SEGA shouldn't be a third party producer anymore. It's quite clear that SEGA isn't meant to be that way. I say bring back the good quality games and epic consoles that made SEGA the BEST gaming company in history.

Since Sega is a third party developer now, would it really make sense to make games for Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo and then all of a sudden go "Screw you guys, we're going first-party again" and honestly think they have a chance in the market after that? Following the Dreamcast, they were approaching bankruptcy until they were bailed out.

They aren't bankrupt anymore. If SEGA could produce its own consoles they could blow all the other companies out of the water. Back then video gaming was a new concept and people never really paid attention to hardcore gaming, but by today’s standards it's the perfect time for SEGA to make a comeback. The Dreamcast needs a few improvements (like a built-in hard-drive) and if it got those improvements it could compete with the XBOX360, PS3, and Wii. They'd possibly even put Nintendo out of business if they could produce their own systems again.
if sega were to make a new console. their best bet would be to target a specific audience, like nintendo did with the wii.
also just because someone is nolonger bankrupt doesnt mean they have the resorces to make a new console.

Actually if sega can not port an old game to the newest consoles that is done well with all the issues removed, plus upgrade it to HD there is no way in hell they can pull off making a console that would be any good. Sega's track record speaks for itself. Sega makes a game dose it half a$$ed or they make an online game and only supports the japan region with new content, sega cant even enforce it's TOS. So tell me why in the hell would you want them to make a new console. Come on people, sega cant even release a game on the network without them leaving glitches, collision errors. Sonic adventure is a very good example of what they should do, but sega dosent care they just want to make a fast buck. Honestly I believe the reason that sega almost went bankrupt wasnt because of sony or nintendo but there own stupidity in not producing games that had all the glitches and stuff taken out as well as there inability to enforce there TOS for the online games, and the fact that the only region they did support was japan when it came to updates and such with thier online games. It is sega's fault that they got in the position they got in, no one else's. Sega to this day dosent get it and most likely never will. It wouldnt suprise me if they in the next few years or within the next 10 years sega will be gone and its their own stupidity that will be there down fall!!! If Sega can not produce or put a game on the networks that actually is glitch free dont bother to release anything. Bottom line if you cant do it right the 1st time dont bother to do it at all.

Has there been any mention of a SA2 on the Live/Networks?
I really want one. Also; not that it makes a difference, because it doesn't, but does it have the Smoother Character designs of the DC version, or the more Pointy and Edgy Gamecube?
Again, like em' both, just curious.
that would require some sort of peripheral, and software to convert DC save data to PS/360 save data. unfortunately there just wouldnt be that much of a market for that, no matter how much i would love it

Unfortunately for me, it seems as though these games have aged badly. I don't know if it's because I've been conditioned to these next-generation graphics or if at the time of the Dreamcast's release everything was just so awesome I ignored it, but whatever it is, the games have lost their appeal with these ports.

Not 100% true. While American developers found it hard to develop games on it. The Japanese handled it just fine, a few Saturn games were ported successfully and without time consuming difficulty, the only on off the top of my head was Grandia (Saturn -> Playstation).

It was still difficult to program for no matter if the japanese were more capable of it. Grandia 1 was actually developed for the saturn first and then later ported to the ps1. It took 2 years before it came on the ps1.

That's because it was a 6th gen system in a 5th Gen era... Imagine if you were in 1999 and made the first Blue Ray Player, and everyone was making DVDs because nobody knew what to do with the extra space on the Blue Ray Disks and TVs can't display HD yet... (That's what happened to HDVDs)
Or, imagine you're in Ancient Greece and the nearest battery replacement for your car is an acidic container in an Egyptian tomb...
"Dreamcast & Sega Saturn HD/widescreen enhanced Virtual Console for Wii-U anyone?" Sonic Dreamcast games may call for a downloadable free multiplayer 3D Chao Garden channel for 3DS! Compatible with any Chao Garden features in future games... NiGHTS could easily be adapted to the new controller!
Many 3rd party developers either focused the games for Playstation, or canceled the Dreamcast releases because SEGA said that "they wouldn't be making another system to compete with Gamecube & PS2",
These companies were unaware that the Dreamcast had better capabilities than the Gamecube... And saw the Saturn more like a N64 competitor, and the Dreamcast as a PS1 competitor, and TV videogame commercials were even more common than movie ads, and in the 90s fans didn't care about system stats, so it wasn't displayed on their websites. Nintendo & Sony also had more advertisements...

why doesn't sega just make a new system and then release a game called "Dreamcast Classics"
containing games like Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, phantasy star online, crazy taxi and more popular games, or they could just make a new dreamcast collection for the xbox 360.
i understand that it would take a really long time to make it, but people are getting tired of xbox 360, ps3, wii, ds, dsI, maybe 3Ds and so on.
they should just make a "dreamcast 2" with VMD's and more sonic games.
