The general difficulty of Sonic Colours will suit younger fans; zones still fly by and you'll wonder at times just how much control you actually have. But each level is crammed, throwing you from one experience to the next. Couple that with the vibrant, colourful new world though and hopefully older Sonic fans will have enough to go at too.

Hype level gone down :)

Yes, let's judge an entire difficulty curve based on a few early-game zones, shall we?

Come on, we all know the Adventure games and Unleashed started on a similar note to that and still pulled through in the end with more complicated level designs. On the other hand, the statement right after that mentioning how "each level is crammed, throwing you from one experience to the next," is pretty telling. What it essentially means is that we probably won't be hearing many complaints about the game "playing itself," one way or another.

Meh, hype level still low

Looks pretty cool, just have to see gameplay first. I thought it would look much worse.

However, I did notice a few things: His textures look terrible (his color is good but look at his legs), then there is the HUD, really pixelly.

The pixel-ish look of the HUD is partly because the Wii's resolution just isn't that hot, but I don't think the small size of the upper HUD really does that shortcoming any favors.

I do hope it gets to be EggmanLand hard in the later levels.

For me it doesn't nesceseraly have to be hard, but at least have the feeling like your actually in control instead of just pushing forward or right followed by homes and that kind of stuff. I hope this game will have a lot of platforming

I believe NP said 2D sections are more platforming heavy. Heck, the powerups seem to demand imput by the gamer, that should calm your worries of "hold right/forward to win".

That was a very good read; hype level up. :)

I also have to express a small bit of disappointment at the "zip through zones" line.
Which is still my only real gripe about Colors, it might be a tad bit too easy. But that's getting ahead of myself. First stages are always easy.

And there are still times when you're put on rails, but this time they're deliberately placed mini-games where you need to jump between actual rails to collect maximum rings or avoid time-wasting drops.

A similar challenge takes Sonic's speed out of your hands but ups the onus on control by sending the blue one around a Mario Kart style track with timed twists of the Wii remote resulting in drifting to maintain speed.

My interest just dropped from 10/10 to 2/10

So it's basically Sonic Unleashed Wii with better graphics, power-ups, and mini-games to appeal to a mass Wii audience. As you can see in the screens there is hardly any enemies and the level design looks very linear.

Looks like it could turn out OK. Reviewers and Wii fanboys will praise it though, they loved the mindless running in Sonic Unleashed Wii

sounds pretty much like it lol... basically as soon as they said they are unsure how much control you actually have, that was a red flag for me. It's probably going to have the same problems of the past.

Sega should stop wasting their time with games like this and focus on proper momentium based games.

by stating in that preview that we will be using the B button, I'm thinking this wont be like SATSR and be more like super mario galaxy type control features.
which would be great so you could actually go backwards and explore a bit. :)

That would explain the shots with two or more Eggpawns apiece, wouldn't it...

EDIT: Also, it sounded like the "mini-game" they were talking about was just a rail-switching segment, which Unleashed actually had plenty of... just not in the Wii version, for some reason.

and the level design looks very linear.

Ya, it does. Granted, they did mention alternative paths you could reach with Wisp powers, so it may be less linear than you think, but I doubt the 3D sections actually have much in the way of multiple tiers and the like.

It wasn't that mindless, although I do admit that Windmill Isle in the Wii version was mind-numbingly boring when I first picked it up and the deluge of Werehog stages immediately after that didn't do the pacing any more favors than Tornado Defense did for the HD version's opening stages.

But of course. How many spectacular 3D physics engines have you seen used effectively on the Wii? I haven't seen all that many. Mario Galaxy's about as refined as that stuff ever gets on that hardware.

I'm expecting a bit more out of whatever they're cooking up for Sonic's 20th, in that department.

Because moment..."ium"-based games are the only kind that can ever be fun.

Hell, no. You can take your finicky Werehog-cam and no-time-to-react QTEs elsewhere, sir.

Scrap Brain hard, on the other hand, I can take. Just don't get Metropolis-hard. Please oh please not Metropolis hard.

Yeah... so if you saw the latest trailer, plus if you combine that with the impressions from CVG

This fits perfectly with the Sonic Strategy SEGA has going on

Super Young Mainstream games - Sonic Colors

Let's not get ahead of ourselves here until we see some actual gameplay that helps make sense of these "previews".

Granted, this doesn't mean the game can't be fun for the rest of us at the same time. =P

The Sonic Unleashed E3 trailer was very similar in terms of the mood it gave. I'm excited for this game, as it shows that Sonic Team isn't under the impression that they're making Final Fantasy: Furry Edition. It doesn't try to be epic. It doesn't try to be cool. It tries to be upbeat, happy, and cartoony. That's what we want. Besides, even if this game is for kids, we're getting Sonic 4 and the 20th Anniversary game. I don't mind if they cater to younger audiences if they're still making games for us, and releasing them very soon after. Earlier, it was about catering to the kids and leaving the older fans in the dust.

Oh, it tries to be cool, but in that "Sonic" kind of way, you know what I mean?

It tries to be cool enough for the kids to get excited. For them, "Hey, look at Sonic run." is enough to buy the game. However, think back to Sonic 06. The trailers for that game had more explosions than I could be bothered to count. Sonic 06 tried to be cool by throwing explosions, monsters, and more explosions at us every 7 seconds. Sonic Colors just says, "Hey look! It's Sonic, doing what he does best; running". Sort of a Sonic CD Intro cool, if you will. :P

Sonic '06 was trying to be epic and edgy, not just cool. There's a difference.

Mike Hayes did have a point when he mentioned that Sonic couldn't really play his old role of the cool kid on the block anymore (my paraphrase, naturally), not because Sonic's incapable of being cool, but because the bar for "edginess" has been raised well past his credible limits. But that's fine. He just needs to maintain his typical levels of charm, cool-factor, and most importantly, fun, and we'll all just keep on loving him for it.
