Is this a bug? It seems like an awfully big punishment to join someone's alliance!

I voted yes, but I do agree with having to restart if you abandon alliance. there's always the option to leave.

No its if you leave an alliance without the permission of the alliance leader. You dont lose anything if your just join an alliance without being member of another one.

You can join alliances without losing anything. :) Just stay in your existing 1-man starter alliance and then look for other alliances to join (via rankings). You can apply here and they can accept you, and you won't lose any resources, buildings, etc.
You'll actually only have things reset if you abandon your alliance. Hope this helped clarify!

There is a bug (?) that you can't join other alliances. I had it for the first few days. When I clicked on join it said: "You cannot join any more alliances" allthough I was just in my One-Man-starteralliance.
Today I suddenly could join other alliances.

hmmmm, cuz I just had someone join my alliance, and when they did, they lost all their buildings and this is the first alliance they have joined. :(
Should this have happened?

Hm, not to my knowledge. I ran into a bug when I changed my alliance name which wouldn't let my friend join it, but when I reverted it back to my in-game name it worked again.
Are you sure whoever joined your alliance didn't accidentally abandon their own alliance first before applying? My guess is this may be what happened.

yes, they did abandon their own alliance, but in my understanding, if it's the first alliance you get when you start playing the game, it shouldn't cause you to lose everything, otherwise, no one would ever join an alliance. Unless there is a way around it?

Ah, that makes sense then. What happens is that you are essentially put into your own one-man alliance, which is just like any other alliance, except that there are no penalties for joining into a different alliance. If you abandon, though, it will warn you that you will lose all your resources, and this will apply to the one-man starter alliance too.
Hope this helps clarify!

hmmm, so there is an option to just join, without abandoning you're own alliance? Interesting...

Yes. :) Just find any alliance in the rankings and apply to join - once approved, you'll merge out of your existing one-man alliance into theirs, and you'll keep all your resources and buildings.

Is there any way for my recently joined alliance member to go back to his one man alliance, getting all his buildings back, so he can then join the right way?

It's still a rediculous punishment. It makes you restart if the rest of your alliance including your leader goes inactive. A cool down period of several days is a far superior option.

There is an option to leave with leaders permission?
If you do that do you keep your buildings?
