To be honest, they can't do that. I mean, we have classic sonic and we have modern sonic. It's cool to mix them, but keeping them separate has always worked.
I'll do the taboo here and compare it to Mario.

We have 3d mario. We have 2d mario. Mario Galaxy was great. New Super Mario Bros was great.
Sonic Colors and its DS counterpart seem to fit that, but look at Sonic Advance and Sonic 4!

I think that they belong separate, it's just always worked.

If it's the latter, looking like a kid is EXACTLY what I like about classic Sonic. Short, non-exagerated proportions. Cutesy all around, mickey-mouse cartoon-like, but still a bad-*** to boot. He's confident in himself, but not overconfident and cocky.

1.- Blaze argument:
The Sonic franchise is FULL of alternate dimensions. They're as common as the floating rings. Why else do you think there are such places called "Special Stages"? Or do you think that's just Sonic getting high on something? Also, 3D Blast took place in another dimension. Fang the Sniper comes from another dimension. And Little Planet disappeared into another dimension/time at the end of Sonic CD.
So, "too many dimensions" = moot argument.


2.-The "olympics" dimension? Come on now, I know you're not serious. So what if there exists an alternate dimension called VANCOUVER and LONDON? (And most importantly, it's a spinoff, sheesh)


3.-Archie Comics... no. Just no, man. Totally different reality. Different writers.

See, the problem with a lot of modern fans (I can't decide if you are one of them, though) is that WE are trying to cover some middle ground here, asking for Classic Sonic in the 2D realm where he rightfully belongs, and keep the modern design in 3D which he even looks better at.

But a lot of modern fans won't even settle for that. They go all "NOOOEZ!1! They're the same! No reason replacing one for the other!"

Seriously? This is what we get for being a little linient. At least this game granted me my first sig's wish... Classic 2D, Modern 3D. And I hope SEGA keeps it this way from here on.

It's opinion, in MY opinion Modern Sonic is a pile of dung. I HATE modern Sonic's design and I prefer the classic design infinitely. I will choose classic over modern every single time, and I'm not the only one. Other people hate classic, and that's fine.

Though I prefer they use classic model well after this. Leave it to merchandising, remakes and games that change art styles. Modern Sonic really is just a different character design anyways, preferring a model is one thing but they are the same characters really. Im sure an employee showed there boss the poll and they are probably cooking up something as we speak seeing as this is a big business opportunity. To be honest, nothing is ever set in stone(this should be apparent seeing as we DO have classic sonic...) so I'm still hoping for a classic sonic return after this game.

Splitting the franchise might not be a bad idea but one problem comes to mind... Which design is going to be the official "mascot" design? In my opinion, I think it would be best for modern sonic to take that role seeing as he is more widely known among old and newer fans and even people who arent fans but something tells me a lot of fans of the retro design probably wouldn't settle for that -_-...ya give a mouse a cookie...

Zelda's case, they split the timeline.
I wouldn't mind 2D games with Classic Sonic and 3D games with modern Sonic. We don't need to split the timeline with that but that kinda missed opportunity according to this game where they are bound to time.

Maybe Sonic CD can split the timeline, or this game. That way they can co-exist for realz.

But it didn't need modernising? Iizuka just wanted to make Sonic his own.......which split the fanbase, losing Sega respect and millions of dollars.

Also when Mario went into the 3D world Nintendo kept the classic formula intact. When Sonic Adventure came along....Sega did not. Hence why Mario fans are genuinely content.

Folks are still waiting for Sega's true answer to Mario 64.......

Look, this really shouldn't be that big of an issue, guys. People have said it before, but I'll say it again: Mario fans have had to deal with design changes and THEY DON'T CARE (and DON'T try to say he hasn't had them; in the original Mario Bros. game for NES, Mario had red overalls and a green shirt). Mario fans never made a big deal about it because the games were so good. It wasn't until Sonic games started to go really downhill (after the Dreamcast era) that design complaints turned from being minor annoyances to starting flame wars. If SEGA starts churning out a string of high quality Sonic games over the next several years, I GUARANTEE the number of design complaints will go down (though not disappear). It's one thing to prefer one design over the other, but when that argument turns to sheer hatred, there's clearly other things working under the surface.

Well.. I can't argue with that. But he was made by a japanese designer, and japanese tend to look a lot younger than they actually are.

Furthermore, he's an antropomorphic hedgehog. Hedgehogs are small creatures, they don't grow the size of golden retreivers or something, they stay the same size, and are small and round. This is just pointing out that a hedgehog character, when originally designed, was set to be a small character.

Okay I need to say this.
Mario 64 is not the same as the 2D Mario. There's similarities but the progression and style is different: More exploration and there's forced collecting. Sunshine drove farther from classics with the FLUDD, but those platforming segments were Mario alright. Sonic Adventure changed a bit more drastically overall but Sonic's speed gameplay was a bit closer to the classics IMO.

I can see Classic Sonic and the gameplay style they have going for him sticking around as its own side-series if it does well enough. I doubt the mainstream Sonic series will see much of Classic Sonic after this, though.
