Interview: Returning Characters, Co-op/Competitive Mulitplayer + New Gameplay

In this year 2011, Sonic is serving 20 years. The concept of Sonic Generations was, a essence, compressing 20 years of history of Sonic in a single game. To achieve this, what we did was put together a traditional Sonic game with its 2D platforming with the modern Sonic and all of its own characteristics. In my opinion, there are fans who enjoy the classic Sonic in 2D, the game of action and platforms with horizontal scroll and others prefer Sonic in 3D, how it is recently.

In 2010 we launched Sonic 4 Episode 1, which was geared toward the older amateurs of classic Sonic but we also launched Sonic Colors, which was geared toward enthusiasts who enjoy Sonic in 3D.

What we have done with Sonic Generations is to create a game that is geared to both groups of fans. We hope for the world to enjoy this game and celebrate together the 20th anniversary of Sonic. The design of Sonic Generations is a true summary of 20 years of Sonic. Therefore, you have a little more toward the classic elements of the character, it tries to cover everything that has been seen in the 20 years of Sonic history.

Today we had a demonstration of Green Hill Zone, which is the first level that was seen in the franchise but throughout the year we will announce other levels of the game. It is not only new things and old things, it is, as I say, everything.

We have today announced that classic Sonic and modern Sonic are of course completely playable in Sonic Generations, but also many other characters in the Sonic universe will appear. Friends of Sonic: Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, etc. which will be part of history and will be an important element of the game. We still have many surprises in store.

The central focus is to create an action game which is fun to play and that can be played in the classic way with classic Sonic and also with modern Sonic. There will be no co-operative or competitive mode, Sonic Generations will be a game of action and pure platforming for the player.

Remember this game has a focus on the Dreamcast era too. That's probably where Shadow comes in. SEGA would pretty much be commiting suicide to put Shadow in the classic age of Sonic. In the end, if there's a character you don't like, you don't use them. And chances are, this isn't like ADVENTURE where you're FORCED to use certain characters you don't like (Fishing), this is classically inspired, they'll be OPTIONAL, I bet my old Genesis for it.

Did you ever consider that they could just be unlockable playable characters for the various stages but will have little to no impact on the actual flow of the story? Something that is purely optional doesn't exactly hurt you in any form, so stop complaining about something you don't even know anything about. other than tails, knuckes,, and shadow i think Amy, Blaze, Metal Sonic, and maybe espio will be playable.
the video says favorite characters so i assume character like rouge, cream, silver, chaotix except espio will not be playable since they're not as popular.

fudge, even i have to agree somewhat. i know sega's trying to get their fanbase back but trashing out other characters as "non-playable" will not only anger the fanbase more but they get back to square one. i for one loved silver, blaze, kunckles, heck even tail's gameplay the most. having other characters playable only in sonic 4 isn't gonna help at all either. so far, this is kinda my only minor complaint.

I'm going to preemptively lock this thread as I think all the key points / opinions have been made, and it will only be going downhill from here.

Personally, I really enjoy both styles of gameplay. Classic Sonic feels very solid, and Modern Sonic's levels are also quite fun in their own way.

Modern is a 1 player racing game again; Confirmed. ^^
Also, it seem like Aaron is getting really defensive about this game?
