Look at top at the banner. I don't see a smile on Sonic there and he looks quite serious.

I think it's great that classic sonic looks so happy. The animators did an excellent job of completely filling the classic sonic character with a happy vibrant personality, and it shows.

I thought the same thing. But it probably won't bother me too much.

Also, I assume the game is still being polished, because I noticed Classic Sonic's movement is a little off. Or maybe it's supposed to be that way.

A lot of fans would say that Modern Sonic looks too "edgy" in the same way, so think of it as one Sonic balancing out the aspects of the other... in more than just a gameplay sense.

..Now we're complaining about sonic being too happy or sonic cd jump effects...I don't get it seriously sonic was a mix of happy and serious and it showed a lot in the cartoons (look at aotsh sonic was constantly happy in that when he wasn't impatient) I mean come on, mario's happy but can also be serious but no one's complaining about that, look at the damn screens where sonic pops up before you play the game, each of the clasics he's smiling and sonics smile when he's shown next to modern sonic felt like a nice nod to sonic one opening where sonic looks at the screen, really happy and smiles to be there, that's why it was done..why don't some people just complaing that sonic doesn't take a dump, I was a massive fan back in 91 but some of the people who are making really far out complaints like this.....why?, there's no basis or reason for it, just leave it alone and get on with it, sonic isn't art it's a videogame.

Sega's done a great job at recreating him just as he was for hd consoles, you should be saluting them for it, again I would kill for another character ( in my avatar, some of you don't like modern sonics model, check out this guys redesigns if you think it's so bad) from another franchise to go back to his classic look and have it pulled together so well...just get over it.

Please do not mix those two up, people.

It's natural for Sonic to be happy. Classic Sonic is expressionism at its finest. Like the old cartoon characters, you can tell his attitude just by looking at his expressions. People complaining about this would be absurd, hence why I'm completely certain nobody cares that he's happy.

I would be too if I had been locked up in a dark dungeon for 12 years, and all of a sudden, fans start clamoring me, and they make me a guest of honor to a 20 years celebration.

Hopefully some people have seen the light with the whole Classic and Modern Sonic, that there's more to it than Green Eyes.

... but jumping sound effect? Ok, THAT'S taking it too far. (And this being said by someone who complained about lack of classic Sonic in the Sonic 4 forums without rest)

Being too happy? *sigh* I'm worried we might've given a bad example to the fanbase, and now they think they can complain about these absurd things...

For all we know, they haven't pitted Sonic in a situation where he can become angry yet.

He even seems to have a little bit of that flare from the American designs, very nice touch, but I guess I'm not helping the argument there if I'm gonna notice those details.

Yeah I noticed that too; it's like the perfect compromise. Notice though when IN GAME Sonic looks like the Japanese design....though I don't have a high res screenshot of that.

I find it funny how the bottom modern old look blends the Genesis Sonic with the Mega Drive Sonic (the American cover has Sonic's head tilted up slightly too)

Actually he does have teeth, he grins at the end of the gameplay trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tV1Osnkr5Nc) - and has teeth.
And his eyes were supposed to be brown.
