About dem uncolored rings

So, what are those? Is this some kind of Hub and they color in when you beat a level?
Did the red rings comeback?
Missions?
What are they, seriously?

You'll have to wait and see.

If I could guess though, they will either unlock an entrance to the Special Stage (if in fact there is one), or will be used for various unlockables. (Such as concept art, alternate music, etc)

I love those red rings. They make me take my sweet time to unlock Super Sonic! :D

(not being sarcastic, I kinda want to savor classic Sonic before unlocking his classic Super self).

They resemble the Special Rings from Sonic Colors, and given the similarity, it's safe to assume they serve a similar function.

I'm actually gonna love the red rings in this one, it'll give me time to appreciate the scenery.

But at the same time I'd prefer if they serve as a means of unlocking content.

They could unlock costumes or videos or art or something.
or an adventure skin, (yeah, the pale-skinned dark blue droopy quilled one.)

They could use adventure voice clips. Since the adventure era was confirmed.
