the PlayStation2 has proved to be a POOR platform to run Sega's Model 2 arcade games on. Virtua Fighter 2 has many problems, most notably textures and slowdowns. the PS2 graphics chip, Graphics Synthesizer does not seem to have the proper texture-mapping capabilities to reproduce the GE Aerospace/ Martin Marietta texture mapping hardware of Model 2, hardware that was completed in 1993, dispite the fact that PS2 is much more powerful overall. the texture-mapping & washed-out color problems have been seen in other PS2 renditions of Model 2 games; Sega Rally and the upcoming Virtual On.
the PS3 however, has a GPU in it that has the texturemapping and image features of SGI workstations since Nvidia is largely made up of ex-SGI enginners. SGI could do basicly anything that GE Aerospace & Martin Marietta could do in terms of graphics. basicly in a nutshell it means that PS3 has the ability to reproduce Model 2 and Model 3 games without downgrades to the texture-mapping, color, and image quality, unlike the PS2.
the point is, PS3 should be the home of collections of Model2 and Model3
games.
I'd especially like to see arcade-exact reproductions of Daytona USA, Top Skater, Wave Runner, Virtua Fighter 3, Scud Race, Daytona USA 2,
Sega Rally 2.
I hope Sega care enough to bring the best of its 1990s 3D arcade games to a home platform that can do them right. be it PS3, Xbox 360 or both.
Dreamcast and PS2, for different technical reasons, were not upto the challenge, dispite being more powerful then the older Sega arcade boards in many ways, they still lacked the image quality features that the custom Model 2 and Model 3 hardware had.
btw, IMO, IGN's Anoop Gantayat is way off about how bad Model2 graphics look, when he said they look like poo in a recent preview of PS2 Virtual On.
September 23, 2006 - I once had a pair of trusty Model 2 goggles. Not familiar with this standard piece of equipment for former Sega fanatics? Model 2 goggles are what Sega fans wore when viewing Model 2 games. When viewed under Model 2 goggles, games on the Model 2 arcade board had crystal-clear textures, no aliasing, and no clipping issues.
Of course, we know how Model 2 games really look now. Like poo. There, I said it. Model 2 games like Virtua Fighter 2 and Daytona were revelations when they first came out in the early 90s, but look at them now, and they've got so many visual flaws that you might find yourself wondering what the fuss was all about.
The Sega Ages version of Virtual On is the latest Model 2 to PS2 port to destroy my childhood memories. As I viewed a person in Sega's TGS booth playing through the arcade mode in its entirety (this guy was a character -- he was... conversing... with the game as he played), I kept thinking to myself, isn't this actually the Saturn version I'm looking at? Did the arcade version really have all these visual flaws.
he's seeing Model 2 graphics downgraded through the PS2, which does make Model 2 graphics look like poo. if he had bothered to compare it to the original Model 2 game, he see the PS2 falls short. Model 2 visuals were brilliant & unparalleled back in the mid 1990s until Model 3 arrived.
I'm playing Daytona USA 2001 on my Dreamcast, and while i love it, i crave the authentic arcade physics and graphics, without having to buy a full blown arcade machine....although admittedly, ive been browsing ebay for prices for a dedicated Daytona USA twin machine....
