STH #185 is out! (DON'T COME IN if you haven't read it!)

Happy V-Day everyone, I'm guessing everyone else got this in the mail as a little gift on Valentines Day as well as me.
So, another drama has begun is Sonic's longest running comic. ^_^ And we're 15 away from 200 :shock: Crazy!

But anyway, who else had read this, and what do you think?

I was happy to see the return of Mina and Ash.
(Ash is one of my favorite comic characters, FYI. Some people can't stand him, I think he's awesome! I was shocked to see him without the tats and spiky hair, though.) Seems like Mina woke him up, so I'm banking on seeing him next comic. It'll be funny to see his reaction to his girlfriend turning into a brainwashed lackey for Mogul. (Maybe he won't mind her smacking Sonic around so much.)

The return of Mammoth Mogul, my favorite comic villain, is also a huge bonus for me. 8) Using Sonic's friends against him? Man, I've been hoping Eggman would try something like that FOREVER, should've known Mogul would be the one to come up with a devious plan. I was wondering how they'd get Mogul back in the game, I think they did it in a great way.
The detention center is also something I've always liked... it's got a creepy element whenever a character goes in there. I'd be freaked out, myself.
I like it because I get to see some of my favorites villains (Nack, Bark, Mogul, Ixy) in the comic.

Also... MIGHTY! How long have I been waiting for him to get a bit of spotlight? The whole business about his parents going to the slammer... poor Mighty. :( (Uh... wtf happened to his baby sister then?)
So does this really mean Mogul gave Mighty all of his super strength? Can he take it back?

One thing that's got me wondering though- is Sonic supposed to be the forth, or are they calling the fourth out?

I'm liking where this is going. I hope it gets a good tie up, and not another cop out. :lol:

(P.S: Who else found it hilarious that Tails had a Sonic poster? :lol: All I could think about was HN's joke thread... man, GETOUTTAMYHEAD!)

I haven't read it, but then again I haven't read one since issue #52...... I just got out of comics in general because of the trend toward crappy artwork, and marvel restarting its characters over. I'm thinking about getting back into sonic comics though, since I started buying those amazing looking transformer comics from DW and the sweet Street Fighter/Darkstalker ones from Udon.

Not yet! If you think about it, you only get 13 a year. (One every month, twice in feb.) I like the comics, because it shows more of Sonic when he's not technically saving the world, you get to see him hanging with his buds in their free time. Not a side you get to see too often.

I like the Sonic X comic better this month, it included pretty much a Perfect Chaos vs. Super Sonic battle...throughout the whole entire comic....I loved it...this time for the standard Sonic comic, I find it un-interesting....

I like the Sonic X comic better this month, it included pretty much a Perfect Chaos vs. Super Sonic battle...throughout the whole entire comic....I loved it...

I was also a big fan of this, Super Sonic's first appearance in the Sonic X comic. And the full page illustration in the back was really nicely done. ^_^ I'm glad that comic series took off.

The plasubility of this story just isn't there from what I've gathered.

I mean, Tails was "marked" by Mogul for example, how come Mogul didn't stop the battle between him and Titan Tails by simply...possessing him?And of all people why would he pick characters like Mina and Mighty to posess? Given that there are characters like Sally, and Bunnie and Knuckles who already had pretty close ties to Sonic and in most cases already had incredibly supernatural abilities, wouldn't they have plausibly made for better pawns?


I didn't like the story because it wasn't plausible. Not only that but he rushed the story by trying to explain it through events that were apparently OFF PANEL. And what's worse is that all these so-called markings never had anything to indicate they existed, and it would've felt better if he'd at least given it a few months to a year to hint the manifestation of Mogul's powers within the characters. I just really didn't like this story. I don't like Mogul much either. He's a godmodding chatterbox.

It makes no sense that Mina or Mighty have their powers from Mogul. As it's been explained to me, if Mogul had the ability to astrally appear to Mina AND Hex her while in the emerald, why didn't he use such power to free himself when he was still trapped within the Master Emerald? From what I gather, Ian in this issue explains Mina was hexed while he was trapped in that emerald, and yet at that point he was being drained of his life force while trapped inside of it. Why didn't he possess someone or telepathically signal the foursome to his aid? And if Mighty were hexed by Mogul, and had close access to the emeralds, why didn't he use Mighty to free himself when he was trapped in the emerald. He could've saved strength and continued to hex Mina. This story doesn't really add up with the actual history of the book.

Flynn really needs better dramatic pacing in his stories, but I'm almost always impressed with the art.

That wouldn't have been necessary if he had possessed Tails. In the Chosen one story arc, Mogul was becoming a god like figure to the multiverse. The only thing that had even halted him in his tracks was Tails turning into Titan Tails and defeating him. With THAT in mind, if he had simply possessed Tails and corrupted his sense of free will, he would've won the fight, wouldn't be in a cell (king of the universe) and thus wouldn't have needed to possess them all at the same time.




2 He posessed Mighty and Mina because they were orphans, and if I read it right, they came to him.


Again, there were many oppourtunities where Mogul would've needed Mighty's assistance or the Fearsome Foursome (the originals). If Mogul had marked Mighty for instance, why didn't he use his powers to possess Mighty and use him to get free from the Master Emerald that was draining his life energy since what Sonic 56 up until the Sonic Adventure adaptation? If Mogul was capable of controlling Mighty then he would've plausibly done so. If Mogul was capable of astrally projecting himself, and was capable of hexing people why didn't he recruit his original foursomes to free him from the Master Emerald as well as other people from the floating island? Why didn't he possess someone to free him? He would've gotten free earlier, retained more life energy from the ordeal and THEN could've went after characters like Tails and Mina the Mongoose. And then there's the plausibility of the characters he selected.

Meh...
Wring, it doesn't make much sense if any.

Which is why they got hexed in the first place, right? Besides Ian had explained that The Ancient Walkers had been gradually losing powers. To a degree this makes some sense. They didn't prevent Tails' abduction, or rescue Tails when Mogul kidnapped him. But it raises the point that they couldn't fight Mogul. If they did, how come they always rely on the other characters to do it.

Once you're marked you can't fight it and Tails was marked during that period Mammoth Mogul was using him as a battery to recharge himself.
Mina and Mighty were both marked at the same time Mammoth Mogul gave them their superpower, speed for Mina and strength for Mighty.
Sonic is the last victim however Mammoth Mogul never managed to mark him, so he's going to send Majin Ta...I mean the mind controlled Tails, Mina and Mighty to capture Sonic so he can be marked.

And that happened at the same time we had that stupid "Evil Sonic seducing every girl in the comic" story...

Truly, the darkest days in the comic.


I rather enjoyed this issue. To my dissapointment, Ian is STILL excercising minor retcons, not all of which work (while Mina getting her super speed from some other source makes far more sense then natural talent that just poofed out of nowhere, Mogul WAS trapped in an Emerald at the time). Ian himself says this is a little something he'll rectify in the future. But the overall story was a very fun read, and leaves me pumped for the next issue. Matt Herms' art was very exceptional I might add. It was also rather nice to see Mina back in a decent story, not being involved in some one sided love triangle or some cruddy assasination plot. This is quite likely the nostalgia talking, but I have always had a soft spot for the character.

You forgot to mention the deal with the whole Titan Tails Arc. If Mogul had hexed Tails, why didn't he just mind control him before he turned into Titan Tails before taking over the universe? And if he'd hexed Mighty since he was a child, how is it then that Mogul never used him to...free himself from the Emerald maybe? Why was Mighty fighting against his Foursome Team? And I don't particularly remember, but while Tails was unconcious at the time of his hexing, and it said in text Mina's memories were actually robbed from her, I don't recall anything being said for why Mighty may not have remembered Mogul.If such is the case that'd only open up a larger can of worms. And heck if Mogul even HAD this ability, I think it's safe to say a lot would be different. If he had cognigitive capabilities outside of the Emerald (which was essentially draining his life force (killing him slowly to put it more bluntly)) why didn't he use his powers so that he got free sooner? He didn't hex any inhabitants of the floating island, didn't hex the brotherhood, and didn't call up the Foursome Team?


Wasn't the idea to clean up plotholes? I don't understand. Why are making new plotholes, to patch up holes that were non existant. Mina's speed may have had an unsavory explanation, but at least it was more plausible than this. I also think that with how much time Mina's super speed has lacked emphasis, it's a little late to try grabbing viewers with a story like this. I think this whole issue would be much easier to fan:):):):) if Ian had just stuck to using Mina getting hexed. The more cirumcstances he draws from to create minions the more errors can be found. For instance, one way may explain mighty, but would make hexing Tails or Mina impossible.

And that's another problem. I thought the idea was that if we sort through the REAL plotholes we can finally get to some actual storytelling. Well if you're going out of your way to make more plotholes, that means more time wasted on having to fill them instead of making stories with heart or much meaning aside from explaining a concept.

Mogul is arrogant. At the time, he had every right to be. He was an all powerful, dimension crushing God. Why mind control Tails when he could smash him like a bug? Titan Tails was an unforseen development.

As for Mighty, you have to assume that Mogul can do ANYTHING while inside the emerald. I don't recall him ever do much of ANYTHING while inside it, and Ian has never actually said that he could. You would also have to assume that Mogul encountered all these people in his travels, and at the time saw it neccessary to imprint his mark. You also have to assume that Mogul would see it neccessary to mind control Mighty while he was fighting the Fearsome Foursome, when Mogul thought he was going to win anyway. It wasn't implied that Mighty's memory of the encounter had been removed...because it had already been implied with Mina, whom had the exact same thing. Mentioning it again would be redundant, which is one of many no nos in writing (particularly comic book writing, where you must use space conservatively). When it's already been mentioned, theres no need to repeat yourself.

Mogul plans ahead. He's conniving. He has back up plans. He only pulls out a card when he think he needs to, and being that he has ALWAYS been rather arrogant, he normally thinks he's been in a pretty good position until it is too late, in which case he normally has some other back up plan anyway. These aren't plotholes. This is the kind of character he is. He saved Mighty, Tails, and Mina for until there came a time when he REALLY needed them. He's at the bottom of the barrel now with no minions, no other plans, no means to escape.

The only plothole here, is the time Mina got hexed, something Ian will clean up. Thats really all there is to it.

Honestly, even though I know you won't do it, rather then argueing this stuff here, I'd advise you ask the creator himself. He'll be more then happy to answer so long as you don't start flaming. I won't be replying to this anymore, as I know what direction these arguments usually take.

Why not do both? You can crush him like a bug and make it so that he cannot escape his fate by using the power of mind control. Why would a person being arrogant hinder this tactic? Especially since controlling Tails takes skill, and power on Mogul's part. If anything it is showing dominance over your sworn enemy. But that aside for a second... after the first blasts didn't work, why didn't Mogul switch tacitcs? In addition, if he was so arrogant to the degree he didn't think he'd need to manipulate anyone to acheive his goals, Tails wouldn't have been hexed in the first place.

I think it was Mina who he would've had to have marked during his time in imprisonment. Mighty was but a child when his hexing occured. Nor was there any in comic refference to a mind sweep when it happened which made me wonder why exactly Mighty doesn't naturally align himself with Mogul if he's hexed, and using powers given to him by Mogul to find his family.


You also have to assume that Mogul would see it neccessary to mind control Mighty while he was fighting the Fearsome Foursome, when Mogul thought he was going to win anyway.


And if by winning that means potentially injuring/killing one of his own, whom he envisioned had great potential would be foolhardy, especially for Mogul.

Don't kid yourself so much. You are naive in your assumption that Ian would willingly just let me waltz in there. I had already tried joining that forum because people like you asked me to ask such questions directly. It never happened. In the end it doesn't bother me as it does you, and frankly it's his loss for a constructive critique (saving me lotsa time if to be perfectly honest). I've seen people post on FUS questions and responses from Ian over this matter. Apparently, people have already asked him about a lot of the stuff I've already mentioned, and he has said things along the lines of "I don't know" and has admitted to these issues concerning the story as "blemishes." I've never felt the need to go there, and do not think I would especially like going. In a sense, I'm glad that it worked out the way it did because it now forces people like you to just accept the fact I'm not going to put up with Ian's board to ask the questions I (and others) have had towards Ian's writing.

I'll give it to you. But I'll say this much. It's a kid's comic supposedly. Many children do not have the cognitive functions to thing very hypothetically and will view the material concretely. That said, they won't attribute it to all the hexed members. Some will, but many probably won't because again they're young kids. Instead of mentionining it again and again he could've said "Like the others, I wiped all traces of our encounter, the best pawns are the unwitting ones." Or something like that. It CAN pass per se as far as I'm concerned perhaps. But as far as how he wrote it....mmmep. Writers no no if the targetted age audience are as young as Archie says. I'll give it to you though. Just bear in mind, some people might not.

If he'd used the mind control on Mighty earlier he wouldn't have had it for later, and he really didn't care about that original attack on the Chaotix anyway. I'm not sure WHAT he was doing there, but he ran from a fight he should have been easily able to win after announcing himself. Anyway, he went for Enerjak's power shortly after, and I'm pretty sure he had already set that plan in motion. As for Titan Tails, well, that was just plain bad anyway, but I'd assume Tails was immune in Titan form since he was merged with all his alternate versions, and he was also fated to win that fight. Still lame, but I don't see why it should have worked even if Mogul did try sometime between his attack and the immediate counter that trapped him.
