This is interesting because a game based on the quake module has thousands of people playing it every day. check out urbanterror.net yes it is desktop based but played on live servers this game could easily be the “example” you are looking for when showing how “free” games can easily create a following. Now generating revenue THAT is the real conundrum that needs to be worked on.
