I'm been spoiled by Supreme Commander and now any camera control that does allow me to zoom way out and completely control the direction and angle is no longer sufficient.
It's possible I missed a control but zoom and angle are tied together on the scroll wheel and seem to be very limited. Direction is good and so is using the right mouse button for quick move.
Even without taking Supreme Commander into account, I think the maximum zoomed-out amount needs to be increased, if only a little bit. Command and Conquer 3 had a very limited zoom, but I didn't feel limited by it as a player (unless I had just been playing Supreme Commander); in Universe at War, I feel like I'm fighting against the camera zoom level, and that's no good.
I agree... I find myself feeling very claustrophobic and very caged with the current distance you are able to zoom out. I have not played Supreme Commander yet. The distance was one of the first things I noticed and did not like.
Though going to the extreme of supreme commander is a bit extreme the zoom level should be moved further back. Seeing the beautiful detail is nice and good, but not when it directly interferes with gameplay
At the very least make the zoom level near CnC3's level, that though not supreme commander (everyone relearn the art of the minimap) still gives adequate player sight of everything on maps very similar in size to those currently used in the beta at the very least
I personally don't see any problems with the zoom right now, but I think you could add a couple more "meters" of zoom without impacting performance too much.
I'll also post one up for the Zoom is Ok club
It takes some getting used to, but I think its actually a game play device and not just a camera
Choose hierarchy for example. To them, the camera is deliberately limiting how much they can see. This allows players to flank the walkers a little easier. The more you can see, the easier it is to prepare a defense.
The low camera allows for more surprise attacks I find
