I was woundering...I've heard of people playing on 'free servers' where they don't have to pay any money, even own a hunters license, to play online with other people...Is this stuff true? and if it is, is it legal and all that other good stuff?

While this may be true, it is considered illegal, as well as hazardous to your gameplay, data, and privacy. These servers are not and have never been endorsed by Sega or Sonicteam.
