4-1 Quest bug?

Be it a bug or a mishap, here's what happened:

I was playing with another person in 4-1 and we forgot to activate the pillar before we took the boss warp, then the warp inside the boss room. We were now in the Ruins entrance area but the door was still locked (b/c we didn't activate the pillar in Mines). So we took the red warp back to Pioneer 2 and talked to the Principal who informed us we must find out how to open the seal. So my party went back and found the pillar in mines, activated it, went in the boss warp, entered Ruins, then decided we had to go back and talk to the Principal...Tho, the Principal was convinced we didn't open the seal, and we clearly did ...Just to make sure we couldn't enter Ruins before taking the red warp at the ruins entrance, we went back into mines, back in the boss warp, and then into the red warp, then went to the Principal, same thing: he didn't acknowledge we opened the seal.

My party went through this last night, sort of. Basically, you have to play through Ruins 1 as well. Your mission is to break the seal, but I guess they never tell you that you actually have to play through the ruins...so yeah.

All of your party must enter the boss room of Mine after 1 of you activated the pillar.
Anyone of you didn't enter?

My party went through it last nite, we activated the pillars..and 1 of them was already activated before we even got to it. Hopped onto the boss teleporter and there was no boss jus a warp to the mines entrance

How do you beat this now?

I activated it and nothing happened in the boss room or beyond that. Only difference between my post and bystander85's is that I was soloing the quest.

You have to clear all of Ruins 1, and do one of those "gauntlets" at the end of Ruins 1. The quest doesn't mention anything about this, but this is what ye gotta do.

I don't really understand...gauntlet things?
