    Haha, while checking up on some more info I ran across this;

    http://www.usenix.org/publications/l...bandwidth.html
    It's a great letter to gaming developers.

    Red don't forget that aslong as your bandwidth (Dn/Up) is reasonable, lantecy should be just fine. With that said, both still rely on the ISP. ISP's still haven't figured out that online traffic is rising fast. More and more most ISP are just trying to grab new customers, while not properly upadting/maintaining there end.

    We could also try to run some ping tests towards asiain sites, maybe even a tracert?

    I'm avg 28ms per ping and avg 35ms in tracert.

    Well you could host a game on Chromehounds, then get one of your squad buddies to look at the latency before he joins the game. If it is a circle within a circle then you are great, if your a circle then you have a pretty good connection. If it's triangle then its below average and if it's an x then you have a bad latency.

    MOW, that isn't true. Your latency will depend on what you're connecting too. You can have great latency in all your bandwidth tests, however, thats not testing the latency between you and the gaming servers.

    Default It's the latency stupid.

    It's the latency stupid.

    Mind you, it's a 10 year old article, but it explains things nicely.

    And both of THOSE take a backseat to Line Quality.... because if you're dropping packets like crazy, it doesn't matter how fat your data pipe is, or how blazingly fast those packets get there.... if they get there at all.

    i think with anything other then phone or satalite you should be fine for playing games. i could be mistaken tho.
    Phone?? You can't play xbox live on dial up. Also, please read my post again and understand that latency is more important than bandwidth.
    You obviously don't know how a Sat. data connection works...

    apparently you don't understand that a loss of packets will increase latency, which means high latency. so, if you have small/short latency, your line quality is ok. If its high, obviously your line quality could be poor, but there are many other factors.

    If you live an area where your buried cable is subject to harsh conditions, your line quality could be bad, but most companies do tests to make sure you have an acceptable amount of voltage.

    download is via satellite and upload is via phone line. I didn't understand his post because of the lack of details.

    EDIT:::

    No, you don't. Bandwidth and latency have VERY little to do with another, when comparing same-types of service (Dial-up, DSL, Cable, Sat., Frame Relay, etc)

    Case in point: DSL

    Regardless if one month you pay for a pipe that is 144kb, then the next month you pay for a 1.5mb connection.... your latency will be the same, because it's provisioned by the same provider across the same twisted pair of copper wires.

    Another one: Frame Relay

    Grab a CSU/DSU, and a pair of routers... set up a point-to-point 56k Frame Relay connection. Do some ping tests. Take that same CSU/DSU gear, and provision a point-to-point T-3 (45mb). You're going to get the same ping times.

    Latency is the length of time it takes for ONE packet (typically 64k) to get from Point A to Point B (and then reply back with a "Yes, I got it!". Your bandwidth is how MANY of those packets can get from Point A to Point B, at one time.

    Make sense?

    Oh, and don't always believe what you read on a Wiki -- any one of us could go in there and type in an explaination. Doesn't make it the 'right' one.
