The only reward you're supposed to get for bopping a robot is points, which eventually translate into 1-ups. The animals are simply what Eggman used to power his robots, and seeing them hop off was always a nice feeling.
Unless you killed a robot in a lava level and they hopped into the lava. Then you just felt dirty inside.

Keep the animals, they are one of the little things that make the originals quirky and such. I'm pretty sure they will.
"This isn't over, blue boy."
what? no. i never said anything about Animals > Rings in terms of importance to a Sonic game.
All I said was that "Animals > Rings" and this is strictly from the context of what comes out of a Badnik when you destroy it. Nothing else.
It's my opinion bro.
You dont need either [Rings/Animals] to beat a Sonic game, and aesthetically, the concept of freeing animals is a lot more pleasing than getting one measly ring out of the possible hundreds scattered through out the zone, imo.
I should of clarified, but you should of as well before jumping to a conclusion such as that.
>_>
EDIT: And tbh, animals have had more weight (not importance) over rings in Sonic games anyways. You needed to capture animals in Sonic 3D Blast, and Animals were used for raising Chaos in Sonic games. **** man, they were part of Sonic's motivation to defeat Robotnik. To rescue his woodland friends.
There has never been a Sonic game where you NEEDED rings for normal levels. Just in the levels that made you play Super Sonic, which aren't counted as normal levels.

He's trying to say that it would be simple logic to make animals pop out of the badniks when it's something that was a Sonic staple for the longest time.
Sonic 1, Sonic 2, S3&K, SA1, SA2, Advance 1, probably some others. Since they're bringing back the badniks, it makes sense that they'd bring back the animals that pop out when you kill them.
Rings never popped out of badniks to my knowledge, and personally I think that'd make the game too easy.
If there's an official game that did that, let me know. The only time I've seen it is in a gameplay video of an earlier Megamix version.
