Trekkis, but the point I'm trying top dispell is the popular misconception that the Sega Saturn was the hardest system to develop for of the 5th Generation. The Atari Jaguar without a doubt deserves that title.Developing games for the Jaguar makes developing games for the Saturn seem like elementary School work.

Well, if it weren't for the fact that the Jaguar was dead and buried by the time Saturn, PS1, and N64 came around you might have a point. But since it was dead no one cares anymore now than they did back then. So what if a dead system that came out a year prior was harder to develop for? It doesn't change the fact that of the 3 major competing consoles (Saturn, PS1, N64) Saturn was the most difficult to develop for. Between it's competitors, Saturn was the most difficult to develop for.

Well all anyone has ever cared about for development difficulty during and after the Saturn era was how difficult it was to develop for Saturn against it's competitors, because that's all that was important or mattered.

I think this myth was further spread by third-parties such as EA and their paid journalists to further lead the market towards supporting the competition.

I recently got into coding and the best way I can describe the Saturn is time-consuming, not difficult. Those are two very different things.

The bottom line for me is: If you're good at what you do, Saturn was an ideal platform. If you were lazy or looking for a quick buck, it was not ideal.

Is it still that difficult to reverse engineer this technology? I want my Sega Saturn Collection this generation!

The Yu Suzuki quote is taken out of context and is horribly misquoted. He said 1 out of 100 programmers are able to get 2x the CPU power by using both SH-2s. Most were able to get 1.5x from both SH-2s. That's not the same as saying 1 out of 100 programmers can program for the Saturn.

What hurt the Saturn the most was how Sega of America handled it. The launch was clumsy and poor, they didn't bring over most of the good games, the marketing was bad, etc. Just about every place they could have screwed up they did. In Japan Sega had a decent marketing campaign and excellent titles were being released. It was enough for the Saturn to be in 2nd against the N64 until the Dreamcast came along. It was enough for the System to have excellent third party support from companies such as Capcom and Konami. Heck for a while Enix was considering making DragonQuest VII for the Saturn instead of the PS1.
