Default Medieval Total War and Nvidia problem?

I am trying to run Medieval Total War on a fairly new Toshiba Qosmio running Vista. The game installed fine but it crashes when a loading a new game. I have tried running the game in XP compatibility mode, but same thing happens. Windows says there is a problem and closes the program. I read somewhere else that there might be a problem with Nvidia cards. Could this be the problem? This computer has an Nvidia 9700. Is there any kind of fix for this?

Medieval Total War was released even before Windows XP you're lucky it works in that.

I doubt it's a video card issue here.
