Default Character development of Sonic characters?

I was wondering about this for a while, so me and a friend had this debate going on for a bit. I said that the Sonic characters do not need as much character development since the storyline is basically run-stop Eggman-stop another big baddie and the fact that it's just about a blue, anthropomorphic cartoon hedgehog and his friends. But then my friend says that with character development, the characters themselves can seem more interesting if their personalities were a bit...deep, as to say. Which I can agree with, but I couldn't help but think that maybe the fans wouldn't pay too much to that rather than just play for the gameplay itself.

So, what's your take on this? All opinions welcome, but don't let it get out of control.

I say yes, SA1 did a good job (unlike the sequel), and would love to see further development, especially for Amy and Tails.

lol.....yeah no they were just as flat and one dimensional as they are now.....its just that SA1 actually had a fairly decent over arching story. That it was still fresh....

Uhm, hardly. SA1 had Tails finally becoming independent and heroic, and showed Amy maturing.
These aspects slowly became reverted in later installments, particularly Heroes.

Yes. Do want. I can't really explain why, but I do want it.

Huh...now that I think about it it would be nice for Amy to have more depth than for what she looks (crazy-defensive-fangirl type). You know, make her mature a bit more into her interests and have her like Sonic, but on a less-hyped scale.

Even in SA1, Tails came off as the dullest character to me, outside maybe the final few scenes of his story. Outside maybe a lack of confidence and backbone (something that is enthasised a lot better with other characters anyway) Tails lacks much along the lines of real flaws and quirks to make his personality distinct. He's more a midget than a kid and is a 'take our word for it' best buddy of Sonic. Even SA1 started that now recurring meetup phrase 'Long time, no see'. When do these guys actually hang out or even talk on a casual friendly basis (going on necessary missions doesn't count)? I think the best treatment of his persona came in the OVA, where he is still an tech genius of high proportions but has it balanced by hyperactive child-like niavite. He needs character and story involvement to justify all those deux ex machina scale gadgets.

SA1 may have been the nearest to fleshing out Amy and giving her extra facets however. I have no problem with her being Sonic's ditzy lover, but I would like her to have some extra development and chemistry with others outside of it.

Actually Amy is a very nice character when hanging with the rest of the gang, but always goes a mile per second when the blue dude appears, after the impression which normally only lasts a few seconds she goes back into normal-Amy mode. XD

...you know, I can't help but feel that maybe Knuckles or Shadow has the most 'depth' a character could have in the Sonic universe. But maybe that's just me
