Because Sonic isn't ready for a movie, and 3d is overrated and derpish.
Movies cost way more to make than a single CGI cutscene. They are also much more timeconsuming than a game. It's not worth it.
11/20/11: The day the intelligence died. The Adventure Rapture. Over 20 threads. 1 day
Big the Cat:Thou's threads may be locked, but the spirit roams free...
Agreed. It takes a lot of time and money to make a full movie, and perhaps SEGA could'nt afford it. Anyway, Sonic games are exactly that, games. They might not make a good movie or full storyline.
Well, they (or SEGA VE Animation to be more precise though) already did a short 3D movie,
it's called Sonic: Night of the Werehog.

(ソニック ナイト・オブ・ザ・ウェアホッグ ソニック&チップ 恐怖の館)
(Sonic: Night of the Werehog. Sonic and Chip. House of Horror).
They even have a special 3D glasses version of it at SEGA's Tokyo Odaiba Joypolis,
where the attendances of theme park enter a special 3D theater for a fee of 600 Yens.

Would be interesting if the Nintendo 3DS Sonic game was bundled with
the 3D version of 2008's Night of the Werehog movie.
And just like 2010's Sonic Free Riders, is promoted at SEGA Tokyo Joypolis,
near the 3D theater for Night of the Werehog (or what ever new movie it's showing).
The 3D aspect of the Nintendo 3DS, certainly give VE Animation more reason to create more 3D movies.
Anyway. The cost of creating a full featured 3D movie isn't just developing it.
But also there are also other cost, like: distributing it,
promoting it, arranging deals for it, arranging 'deals' for it, and so on....
All of which might cost even higher than the cost of developing it.
Then there's 'non financial cost' of it.
The fact is that the financial sponsors of the movie tend to change the story.
And we know on what happened in the last ('very') high budget Sonic work.
You want Sakamoto Maaya to voice another Sonic work?
Let Square-Enix deal with her instead.
We are lucky that she didn't end up voicing for Amy
and Amy's characterizations were changed to suit her.
A 'good' story is a 'good' story (*1), what ever its form.
Though the story of each Sonic game tend to be structured
like a TV series than a movie, this includes even 2006's Sonic the Hedgehog.
2009's Sonic and the Black Knight for example,
look like a series of episodes from the Sonic X TV series.
The same goes for 2010's Sonic Free Riders.
Of course, one can always make a full featured movie using a series of TV series episodes.
At least the stories won't changed much like it would for a recreated story.
Unless they redubbed it. Where Sonic dumped Amy for Sally, and swore to never chase another girl.
Sonic then......Sally.
*1 Someone's trash is another person's treasure, or vice versa.
I hate 3D movies, so I am against this idea.
