Of course they did. They wanted Sonic to look like it's for elementary school kids, even though I thought most of his fans, by 2003, were at least of pre-teen to early teen age.

Seriously, although I'm not against it, I wasn't asking for an ultradeep anime, with that 'hazy light' theme and well-placed lighting, 60 fps animation, DBZ/Naruto/big budget action and explosions with truly awesome characterization... but at least.... *disgruntled sigh* Ah well. No use complaining about it now, I guess.

I WILL say that I do love those supporting humans. All of them had interesting personalities and characteristics. The only real problem I had was that they focused primarily on the blandest one to be one of the main stars.
I had few problems with the humans, aside from Chris. I'm actually flabbergasted why so many fans are against human usage.

I really like anime, OK? But, since Sonic isn't big in Japan, it's not like he's going to get - sees someone else said this- exactly. If something's not popular in America, why shell out $100,000,000 for it in a Hollywood movie? *Thinks about Transformers* Hmm...
Anyway, I'd love another Sonic anime. I prefer anime over Western art, most of the time.
But can it be Americanime? Basically eastern art but everything else is Western? If it can't be (Americ)anime, if it's a Western cartoon with Western styles and dialogue, I really REALLY wouldn't mind at this point in the game. Actually, I just want a new Sonic series on TV since all people are seeing relating to Sonic's cartoon outings are his two crappiest shows, X and Underground. (Why? SEGA, what the hell kind of business decision is that?!) Even a CG cartoon. C'mon, Seg. Please us. Give us something. That doesn't suck.

The truth of what Sonic X, and satAM 'could have been' does annoy me, they are reasonable enough concepts and the writers occasionally came up with something interesting.

    I think they both started out 'fair enough' and gradually got worse;
Character's portrayals degrading and Sonic's relationships with other characters being pushed away in favour of the 'new character' (In Sonic X, Sonic became more of a Mary Sue as he got closer to Chris, in SatAM, he became more stupid and dysfunctional as Sally became a Mary Sue.)

It just seems they really could have done better if they tried.

Truth is, if you watched it when you were a kid, you probably enjoyed it, so why bothering with it now.
    When I was 10 I didn't even knew 4kids was this horrible.

It did seem for most of the shows, the writers seemed a lot more interested in their own original 'pet' character than Sonic himself, using him more as a development tool to help with their own cast.

I think Chris kind of flopped in this area since his personality isn't really designed to be more interesting than Sonic's, he was made as an audience surrogate, an 'everyman' so giving him heavy spotlight just made clear how boring and inflexible his character actually was. Sally at least had more of a personality to work on, even if she was still largely a 'reactor' character to her more abrasive comrades (in Archie she is almost as bland as Chris however). The creative team seemed to overestimate how much more interesting their own ideas were to the games so didn't really bother much with the latter.

Not according to the games team at least. They pretty much class it the same as how the Sonic ones are criticized here.

Truth be told this seems to apply to a lot of shows/movies we once thought were the best and after seeing them again in a more objective way, we realize the flaws they have, from animation to storytelling.

The two main issues I have with both SaTAM and X. The first is kind of justified due to it being developed when the franchise was in it's infancy, however with X there was not much justification to place the story on earth since the franchise had most elements to build a basic story pretty much defined.

It seems almost anything with Sonic's name on it is going to have some wasted potential huh?

I don't think differenciating itself from the games is a bad thing. As STC writers said, creative freedom is what prevents an alternate work being anything but a shallow piece of merchandising. It's just when said changes don't really end up any better than if they had just used the original stuff. Differenciating for the sake of differenciating is different from making a creative alternative universe.

The problem with some of the shows is that some of their changes to the games mythos actually make the storytelling even less depth or entertaining than they were originally. As said Chris was a bland non descript character that didn't really have appeal as a lead character. Similarly SatAm made odd concepts that actually had a noticable similarity to the games ones only made as diluted and non descript as possible. I can bet a good few people felt screwed over when both the Floating Island AND the time stones made a presence in Blast To The Past, but as little more than generic plot devices.

And yay, finally got back on the site.
