I think it's pretty stupid to designate which characters are "needed" and which ones aren't, when you get down to it, the only individual characters that are needed are Sonic & Eggman, the protagonist and antagonist respectively, without them you have no series, and it wouldn't be able to go anywhere.

Now a general supporting cast on the other hand is probably a necessity, especially for a series like this one where the protagonist spends most of his time traveling the globe, and therefore will probably meet new people wherever he goes. And as far as supporting characters go, everyone is needed if that is the case; popularity or seniority mean absolutely nothing in this case, a protagonist/antagonist need a supporting cast to play off, that's all there is to it. What dynamics they have with each other depends entirely on the characters themselves, and not what the fans want or who they feel are "needed".

I'd say Sonic, Tails, and Eggman, but the series would be too dry with only them, so I'd say Amy, Cream, Espio, Vector, Charmy, and Knuckles. Blaze and Metal Sonic should be minor characters, only appearing now and then.
