Plot ballooning is pretty common with comic books nowadays. A lot of stories are padded out so often times they read better in graphic novel form.
I've often found that plot ballooning tends to be filled with a lot of hot air.
True enough... But the plot ballooning in the archie comics Sonic is ridiculous and stupid. The plots go nowhere and resolve nothing

Well there are a few things that people can excuse like genesis which was made at the last second due to sonic's 20th anniversary the crossover which Ian wanted to do after the current story arc but sega and capcom told him that it should happen by the mile stones which make sense because 1) the sonic comics turn 20 and 2) the mega man franchise turns 25.
It's partially the reason I can't get into comics, they're pacing is mostly horrible.
