Sonic Generations was very much supposed to represent Sonic and his past, it even goes so far as to become almost two separate games for this purpose, so it seems like a very obvious choice. It's a lot more interesting question if you except Generations I think, as representing Sonic was kind of its whole point. Without Generations the question becomes more of what is Sonic to you, and which single game represented that.
I support Sonic CD DLC Desert Dazzle and Final Fever.
I'd say Unleashed isn't a good representation. Outside of the Sonic fandom it's disliked and its visual style, storyline and playstyle are very different to your typical Sonic game. Realistic settings, brawling, huge monsters blowing up the earth, etc. I'm not saying that because I personally dislike it I'm just saying it's a bad flag bearer. I agree that Generations is more suited, but I don't know why the arguably best Sonic game ever is deemed "irrelivent". Considering Sega tried, and failed, to make a successor, twice in the last 2 years, and revived its playstyle last year, I'd say it's still relevent. Plus it's one of the ones that everyone who has fond memories of the series remembers.
