Which game best repersent the sonic series

I'd say Unleashed isn't a good representation. Outside of the Sonic fandom it's disliked and its visual style, storyline and playstyle are very different to your typical Sonic game. Realistic settings, brawling, huge monsters blowing up the earth, etc. I'm not saying that because I personally dislike it I'm just saying it's a bad flag bearer. I agree that Generations is more suited, but I don't know why the arguably best Sonic game ever is deemed "irrelivent". Considering Sega tried, and failed, to make a successor, twice in the last 2 years, and revived its playstyle last year, I'd say it's still relevent. Plus it's one of the ones that everyone who has fond memories of the series remembers.

Indeed the classic Sonic games are still relevant as representations of Sonic, as there are still many things in Sonic games now that the classic games introduced such as running and jumping, among other less obvious fundementals. Being old does not change that, it can even enhance its representation of Sonic since the argument could be made that the original games were closer to the original conceptions of Sonic, and therefore represented Sonic best. It all depends on what Sonic is to you, really.

And just to say, Speed isn't what Sonic is all about, it never was.
Even with the modern games and even Unleashed.
As fast as Sonic could run in Unleashed, there were still many things to change the pace~ The were-hog, the hub-worlds among other things.
