Pretty much. Personally the thing I like with Eggman is that since he is supposed to be a supervillain, his egotistical shennanigans don't feel forced since that is what supervillains do. The people who write him have a very clear idea of what his character is supposed to be while Sonic struggles to have an identity.
He can still have good moments, as long as he acts naturally instead of pretending to be "cool" with "epic" heroic poses or corny one liners.
To be fair we've had threads from 2004 get bumped in the not-too-distant past

When you try to be what you want to be in stories, games, etc. It usually fails.
I kinda said this with the Cream praise fiasco.
This is true, but trying to make a character "cool" is usually the one that falls flat the most, namely because what's cool changes over time. The waaaaaaaaaaaaaay past cool Satam Sonic makes me cringe in this modern day and age. Characters that are unique in their own rights and happen to fall into other categories are the bast
