Well, here's the thing: Sonic's whole point is to be a "cool talking hedgehog with an attitude". However, coolness is a matter of preference. Therefore, some people will find Sonic's lines fine, while others will find it forced and corny. Eggman, however, only has to fit the role of a somewhat quirky villain, and as such, his lines can be a lot more versatile.

Pretty much. Personally the thing I like with Eggman is that since he is supposed to be a supervillain, his egotistical shennanigans don't feel forced since that is what supervillains do. The people who write him have a very clear idea of what his character is supposed to be while Sonic struggles to have an identity.

If you want my opinion, the whole "cool attitude" thing sort of died in the 90's. That's why Sonic's best moments are in his action scenes, and not his talking scenes.

He can still have good moments, as long as he acts naturally instead of pretending to be "cool" with "epic" heroic poses or corny one liners.

When you try to be what you want to be in stories, games, etc. It usually fails.

This is true, but trying to make a character "cool" is usually the one that falls flat the most, namely because what's cool changes over time. The waaaaaaaaaaaaaay past cool Satam Sonic makes me cringe in this modern day and age. Characters that are unique in their own rights and happen to fall into other categories are the bast

Exactly. If anything it is the friends who gets more flack than Sonic himself and he is still the most popular character.

To answer this thread, Eggman and Sonic are both great.
