Well, King Koopa as seen in the The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, was directly based on this King Koopa sprite from the original Super Mario Bros.

I could tell, as most early American media based on Japanese works based the art off of sprites. Including Capcom, Sega, and Nintendo.
